As Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic filled out his absentee ballot Tuesday in the recall election against him, he was surrounded by cameramen and reporters.
''If it comes out I voted for it, you'll all know,'' Plusquellic said, laughing.
Plusquellic handed his ballot to a Summit County elections board employee and put an ''I voted'' sticker on his lapel.
''That was easy,'' he said to a crowd that was at the board to vote in support of him.
''Come on down. Anybody can do it,'' he said.
More than 100 local government officials and citizens went to the board during the lunch hour to cast absentee ballots against the recall and to show their support for Plusquellic. They included leaders from the city, Summit County and Akron school board, as well as prosecutors and judges.
The group met outside Summit County Democratic headquarters, which is beside the elections board.
''Game on!'' said Summit County Councilwoman Ilene Shapiro. ''Let's go vote!''
She called the recall attempt ''absolutely outrageous.''
Shapiro then led the group to the board, where they filled out applications for absentee ballots and voted.
Kirt Conrad, an Akron school board member, said the mayor has been ''good for Akron'' and the recall would be ''bad for the region.''
Summit County Executive Russ Pry called Plusquellic an outstanding leader.
''That's why we're doing better than other parts of Northeast Ohio,'' Pry said. ''Don's leadership had a lot to do with that.''
Plusquellic, who was delayed because of an Internet radio program on which he appeared Tuesday, showed up as the voting was under way. He was met by hearty applause.
''This is showing that voting is easy,'' he said, making his way into the packed lobby. ''Thanks for coming.''
Plusquellic encouraged Akron residents to vote by absentee before the election, which will be June 23.
''This is important,'' he said. ''I don't want to see people the day after the election say, 'I wish I had voted.' The outcome will determine the future of this city.''
As of Tuesday afternoon, more than 400 people had voted absentee, either at the board or by mail.
Recall supporters also are encouraging people to vote early.
''We are working hard at getting our base mobilized and out,'' said Warner Mendenhall, the Akron attorney leading the recall campaign.
Mendenhall, who plans to vote absentee, said people might intend to go to the polls June 23 but could end up being busy.
''It's summer time,'' he said. ''They might be at the pool.''

Already admitting defeat Warner? Thanks for wasting out money. Now go pay your taxes you deadbeat.
ditto yank. mendenhall is wasting our money on this recall. king don may be an arse, but he's not a criminal that needs recalled. he should get a shrink on his own dime to deal with his "issues"
And the Beacon just happened to have cameramen there?
Vote early and often - have obamme send his acorn buddies.
Does anybody think that if this was a republican getting recalled that the beacon would do a story for getting out and voting early. Maybe the beacon delivery drivers can pick the people up and deliver them to the polling places on election day.
Does anybody wonder why the beacon is going down the crapper.
Is the Beacon going down the crapper or are the Republicans in the crapper? VOTE NO FOR RECALL!!!
This has been a story in Akron for months. Of course the Beacon would/should have a photographer and reporter on it. Trying to recall a Mayor of more than 20 years in a city this size IS a big deal. They show up to cover a couple a dozen citizens who rally against the police numerous times...this is just as newsworthy.
I am curious. The story said "more than 100" were there. On the TV news I thought they reported "hundreds"--which is more accurate?
@Reason... and there was a beacon camera person when Mendi and Clowns turned in their first failed attempt at the recall as well, so what is your point? Are you just verifying that the Beacon is acting fairly?
I REALLY DON'T CARE ABOUT NO RECALL THERE ARE OTHER THINGS LIKE LOSS YOUR JOB AND HEALTH CARE. THE PEOPLE THAT DID THE RECALL SHOULD GO TO THE WHITE HOUSE AND HELP THE PRESIDENT WITH THE WORK BUSH LEFT BEHIND, THERE WAS NO RECALL THERE. SO PEOPLE FIND SOMETHINGS ELSE TO RECALL LIKE YOUR BANKS THAT'S NOT LENDING OUT LOANS FOR HOMES.
I just moved here from out of town. Why is Plusquellic being recalled? Did he commit a crime or something?
Leading lambs from Fairlawn into this ego driven tantrum. How passionate a celeb-cause that would lead so many (rich) people to try to erase the election. working people vote, rich people recall.
Why did we bother to vote in the last mayoral election if anyone with enough money (from not paying their own taxes) can come along and sponsor a faux grass-roots coup?
Its time to go Don! www.akronwatch.org

Probably neither.
Donofrio (BOE, not Summit Fiscal) said over 200 ballots had been cast at the BOE through Friday.
Now (after the photo op) she stated that over 400 ballots had been cast 'in person and by mail'.
I'll go with Akron News Now's count of 75, even though their video and the ABJ's photos don't show anywhere near that many people.
Wildflower,
Good question.... and one constantly met with spin by the pro-recall folks. Mendy obviously exhibits a sociopath personality in that the legal and societal rules don't apply to him or his spouse (taxes, child support payments, traffic tickets, the vote of the people, etc).
Also, when speaking of monied interests, don't forget the Subcontractor's Association of Northeast Ohio. You know, the group where most of the members aren't Akron citizens and only stand to gain financially from a recall.

Please define "just".
I find it funny that you make this kind of claim, especially since one of your February, 2009 postings stated that you had been reading articles written by the murdered Kent State professor "over the past few years".
I know that it is tough to get news from 10 miles away.
"don't forget the Subcontractor's Association of Northeast Ohio. You know, the group where most of the members aren't Akron citizens and only stand to gain financially from a recall."
As opposed to the small group of contractors/ developers who get the work and also happen to be big contributors?
Pay to play baby!
@ Overtaxed
I think it was sarcasm...
Wanted to make you supporters give a reason for the recall. It is the same back and forth for the last two months, which is why I have slowly backed out of this :)
@ blkswn
You are very right. Politics is a very expensive game on both sides. I smile to myself everytime I see a Cavanaugh construction crew doing work here in Akron.
Pay to play is very true.
Judging from the photos, it looks like Plusquellic's group arrived en masse, as if they'd been bussed to the elections board. Classic photo op; it's what campaigners do all the time.
Hang on - the story says "prosecutors." Are these City employees? Well, we obviously know now how they voted, and so does the mayor. Were they required to take part in this? What about city employees' right to a secret ballot?
Don voted for his own recall & was humming Johnny Paycheck song "Take this job & shove it...."
I think you need more than 100 folks. So, how many showed up today?
People who think they are leaders but whom few people follow are just out taking a walk!
Why did you even ask Conrad. Wasn't he appointed by the "club" vice elected by the voters. What did you expect him to do?
Hey Mayor...are you nervous about your polling data? You're going to get to see what a job search is like for someone over 55 in this model economic urban engine you brag about helping to shape!
@Exasperated, their right to a secret ballot was not harmed. They may have walked in a group to the election board, but that does not mean they all voted the same as the Mayor.
I suspect many city employees would vote against the recall, because right now they are employed and who knows who the unknown replacement would fire or replace.
@TOJ I still think your a shill for the mayor.
I will repeat this yet again... If the mayor or his minions would simply refute the arguments presented by the recall group this matter would be over. Instead, I seen NOTHING, noted that fact too.
Recalls do NOT have to be based on laws being broken. Poor management of city funds is reason enough for a recall attempt. CEO's lose their jobs due to poor management. The mayor is the CEO of the city... yes?
If he does not get voted out, I don't want to see any more complaining here about Don, go out and vote him out today, instead of blogging here about it. This does not count to vote him out.
Go away Don. And take your supporters with you. How long did it take all of those people to vote? did it keep them out past their normal lunch time? That is a waste of money. Hey Beacon, I am going to go down and vote early next Thursday. Wanna come and take a picture of me? My guess is no.
Doing better than most parts Mr Russ Pry? There's a reason why there hasn't been a Summit County job opening in months and the same three City of Akron jobs have been posted for a month and it takes 6 months to hire anyone from the hundreds of applicants for each...
farwest side,
I voted on the use of City funds in 2007. Did you vote or were you still asking people on ohio.com how to vote back then as well?
farwest side,
I'm looking forward to the recall of every City Councilman as well since management (notice the lack of a prefix) of City funds is the only factor.
Yes,
Please do vote this time. I don't want to put up with another do-over in a year because you don't vote when you have the chance.
Gee, many of those suppoters of Plusquellic were on the clock when they cast their ballots. I was reprimanded once when I was an active police officer for voting on my lunch break in my assigned patrol area when I was on duty!
The mayor has hated the Akron Police Department since he was a councilman, and has all but destroyed it. He has increased the City's debt from less tha 20 million dollars to close to a billion during his time in office! If those aren't VALID reasons for a recall, nothing is!!!!!!
Jason, I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I vote in every election. It is time to get rid of Don the Dirt Bag.
A concern: Ilene Shapiro calls the recall election "absolutely outrageous". Regardless of your position on this issue the recall election is a tribute to our democratic system in America. For a councilperson to be discrediting the process is disturbing. Lets face it: Don has his good points and his bad points. Should his successes negate his indiscretions/lack of ethics/or possible violations of the law? Do the ends justify the means? Lets see what the voters have to say.
In the beginning, Mayor Don failed to take this small group seriously. Now He is in for the fight of his career. I also noticed, he is more kinder, and mindful of what he is talking about these days.
This is a very serious campaign and it is VERY clear that the mayor is worried. If any of you listened to his little internet "interview" yesterday from a biased friend conducting the interview, you would have FINALLY realized it that the recall effort is alive and doing well! www.akronwatch.org
@TOJ I have voted in every election for more years than you can even fathom. I consider it a solemn duty to vote in every election..
Mismanagement of city funds is the main issue being presented here.. in many different forms.
As for City Council members.. get real.. they are a rubber stamp for the mayor and you well know it!
I have ask ANYONE how to vote .. I have said to persons like you who are in favor of this mayor .. REFUTE the allegations.. plain and simple... but it is becoming apparent that you can't.. can you?? If you do.. the mayor will get my vote.. and I believe the votes of many seeking the FACTS. For you see TOJ, I research my options before I vote.. I do not simply go out and vote for anyone with a D after their name.
Stop teh name calling.. syop the excuses.. refute the allegations.. or am I asking for too much?
OOPS!! typo there.. I NEVER ask anyone how I should vote...
@ retired cop.....yep, those reasons were enough for me! Bye Bye Donny....good luck trying to find a job in the Akron you created. Wait, I'm sure if the recall succeeds, Don will leave Akron since jobs are scarce lol.
Why did he vote absantee? Will he be away on one of his lavish trips?
farwest side,
Why would I refute something that official oversight entities (FBI, state auditor, ratings agencies, etc) ignore? Just because someone says or charges something stupid doesn't mean I should validate the stupidity with an answer. Once again, almost every Summit County mayor, the Beacon Journal, the Plain Dealer, Joe Finley, etc say this recall is foolish. But we're ALL wrong, right? We just need to look at your websites some more, right? You want to talk about shill, how about your shilling for the recall folks?
As far as automatically voting for D, neither do I. Unfortunately, this situation isn't that oversimplified, but you can attribute it to partisan politics if you'd like.
@TOJ My website?? Man are you way off base... I have zilch to do with the recall.. They have listed allegations.. as frivolous as you say they are.. then they should be easily refuted.. but again.. you can't or won't. I have until June 23 to make up my mind..
As for the agencies you mention, I would ask those who are involved in the recall.. why have they ignored this matter?
One other thing... you must have never suffered a frivolous lawsuit where you have to go to court and refute the matter even though it is, as you say, totally frivolous.
@A Retired Cop Who Knows, the article clearly stated they were on their lunch break and not on the clock.

@Gain Some who posted:

Perhaps you should re-read the story. The article is neither 'clear', nor does it mention 'lunch break'.
What it does say is:
"More than 100 local government officials and citizens went to the board DURING THE LUNCH HOUR"
That is no more specific than saying 'at the close of business'.
Not everyone's "lunch break" falls at the same time. The same applies to the term "lunch hour".
The article doesn't attempt to touch upon whether or not the "officials and citizens" were 'not on the clock'.
Haha the Mendi Clowns don't even know when the election is!!! I guess they are all two years too late.
{{{Just because someone says or charges something stupid doesn't mean I should validate the stupidity with an answer}}}
Or TOJ won't answer because there isn't an answer.
To date, all we've heard from the city hall hero, is his accolades and awards.
Not once, has he answered any of the allegations against him. I'll take that, as iff'n they are all true.
And to the tiresome foilks, TOJ are y'all listenin', that prose that the city hall hero hasn't broken any laws, therefore shouldn't be recalled, I'll again remind folks to look at Toledo's Mayor. He didn't break any laws either, and is goin' to be recalled.
Beta,
Really, so now you can see the future, you know how elections will turn out in advance.
Please give me the mega millions numbers while you're at it, I could use a little stimulus.
Betmax keeps saying - "And to the tiresome foilks, TOJ are y'all listenin', that prose that the city hall hero hasn't broken any laws, therefore shouldn't be recalled, I'll again remind folks to look at Toledo's Mayor. He didn't break any laws either, and is goin' to be recalled."
And this proves ...NOTHING! Or, is Toledo the end all and be all of what is correct procedure and protocol? You can look at screwed up Toledo until your eyes bleed for all I care. there is no justification for a recall of Akron's mayor. End of discussion.
@Overtaxed Voter - You are kidding right? Your silly argument over lunch break vs. lunch hour has got to be the most pathetic reach I've witnessed for quite some time. Let me give you a hint: NO ONE FRIGGING CARES ABOUT YOUR INANE HAIR SPLITTING OBSERVATIONS OVER ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
Let this recall election be over so the mayor and the rest of us can go on with important issues.
Gain Some More Reality - So was I and was still reprimanded. That's my point!!
How about resonding to my other points....no one has yet!!
@farwest side - If you have any experience in the public forum you'd know that it is best not to respond to frivolous accusations. A courtroom is a whole different matter. Thanks for mixing apples and oranges. It was entertaining.
@Jester - The only one leaving Akron after the election will be Mendenhall.
Jackson - the recall is a tribute to bafoonery and not the democratic process. it is based upon a flawed charter. And I do not have to have respect for dishonest charades cloaked in the title of "the democratic process". I truly hope this disturbs you even more.
@bilbo Touchy aren't we....
Maybe you consider my analogy apples to oranges.. but I do believe it is apt.. knock down the the accusations, which YOU say are frivolous, and this whole matter goes away.. BUT instead you have done the same as TOJ... railed against everyone you do not agree with and did not answer any questions raised by anyone.
talk about entertaining...
Bilbo...
Does a judge "punch a timeclock"?
Does a prosecutor "punch a timeclock"?
Since the answer is "no" to both questions, Retired Cop's point is very valid.
Don is a joke. A lot of his over-spending and personal use of Akron's funds have been brought to light. The ONLY reason he voted early was to make people run down and do the same thing, and hopefully for him. The Beacon should have NEVER covered the story. It was very one sided, and I am very disapointed. We could sure use another news source in Akron.
Mayor Don personally got in my face once for asking a simple question, and believe me, it was not pretty. I have never been talked down to like that in my whole life. My husband told me that Don has been a smart-mouthed idiot since high school. I have no respect for the man, and I for one do not trust him. For those of you that want to keep him, vote no, but my vote will be a giant YES.
why is donnie boy and his crew wasting more of our tax dollars sending out material to vote no on the recall and making telephone calls at night,I will be voting for the recall but it will be yes to recall him, maybe he will be there in that special place in h....with all of those of those he sent there.
@A Retired Cop Who Knows, if you were on lunch, you were not on the clock.
@Overtaxed Voter, if you consider 100 employees as "all" than you are not worth discussing this issue with. Considering only a 100 city employees made the trek it would be very easy to find 100 that could take their lunch at the same time.
@A Retired Cop Who Knows, I have responded to those points before but the recall group wants to ignore them.
I have looked at all the major cities in Ohio that are the size of Akron or larger. I cannot find one that has a lower debt load per person than Akron. In addition, part of that debt load includes the money for the school rebuilds and funding as already been established for that. I also have not seen anything showing the debt is greater than $800 million, so I am not going jump to "close to billion" with you.
In terms of the police issues, I have not seen any public information that demonstrates "hate". You were have more knowledge in this area. I have also talked to cops that support the mayor. Can you share some specific evidence?
@ANN2, those materials are not funded by tax dollars.
Ann2, you fit in with the rest of the jokers trying to recall the Mayor. The anti-recall literature is paid for by Citizens FOR Akron... you should try learn a few things before you post. The real waste is the cost of this bogus election and the human capital wasted tracking down worthless public record request among other things.
To Yes, maybe you could share the information you have because I have seen nothing that demonstrated the Mayor has overspent for personal use. Seriously I have seen the 1000 dollar steak dinner attack get defeated by being paid for by First Energy, the lavish gifts turned out to be a nice $100 Don Dumm... ewwww! What else has there been?
As for the Beacon covering this? Are you serious? The Beacon covered the lead joker Mendi himself turning in too few valid sigs on his first go-around. Now that was a waste of time to cover.
Vito Gironda and Kenmore Construction will keep their meal ticket in office.
Gain Some Reality - Police Officers, as are most city workers, are considered on the clock during their lunch breaks, and their lunch breaks are "in service" (meaning available to respond in case of emergencies.....which I was while voting).
I don't care about other cities, the fact is the man has increased our debt from under 20 million to nearly a billion during his terms! This is a fact from the City's own spreadsheets.
As for the police issues, read the Beacon over the last 23 years. Police officers who support this mayor are few and far between. Expect to see more on the issue of his relationship with Akron Police before the recall happens!
Test
Gain Some Reality - Excuse me.....from 16 billion in 1986 to over 800 million now. That's only a 784 million dollar increase...chump change!!
@A Retired Cop Who Knows, office staff are not on call during lunch. Did you look at the picture? Those are not the type of people that need to jump for an emergency during lunch such as a cop or fireman.
@A Retired Cop Who Knows, again $800 million is not almost a billion.
And if other cities of the same size or larger in Ohio have a larger debt per person, which I have seen no number against, than Akron is doing a fairly good job. The fact is you are making a judgment call without looking at the larger perspective or starting block for comparison. All of the major Ohio cities are in debt and are gaining debt faster and a larger amount per person than Akron.
If you are not happy with Akron, you better just leave the state.
The 8 major cities in Ohio in no particular order are; Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati,Akron, Canton, Youngstown, Toledo & Dayton.
Now, out of those cities, which would you prefer to reside in? Think about it very carefully and do your research, full research before you answer.
Only 5 of your 8 cities listed have a workforce of 100,000 or more.
What do you use to establish your threshold of being a "major" city?
Wish there was an update on this report:
http://www.cornwall.rutgers.edu/pdf/Urban%20Fiscal%20Health%20-%20Report.pdf
Cleveland's debt per person:
Cleveland has been over $4000 for the last 10 years, including almost $6000 per person since 2003. See: http://www.city.cleveland.oh.us/clnd_images/finance/FRC/2007CAFR.pdf
@Overtaxed Voter, do you really want to fight cruisemaster over "major" cities. It is clear those are the top 8 cities in Ohio by population. But he actually listed 8 of the top 9 as Parma beats out a couple of those cities.
@Cruisemaster -- I can answer that because I've lived in most of those cities. First of all, you can not compare Akron to Columbus or even Cleveland. Actual COMPARABLE cities to Akron are Dayton and Youngstown.
You can compare Cleveland to Columbus, but none of them can be compared to Akron. Everyone else can spare me the excuses because, given the stupidity of everyone behind the recall, it is evident that they've never lived elsewhere.
Anyways, I'll tell you right now that I'd choose to live in Akron hands down. Oh wait. I do. I moved back. At least Akron is finding things to do with old manufacturing buildings (BF Goodrich for example).
Those of you complaining about the alleged problems in Akron haven't a clue exactly how much better you really have it. Get out of your parent's basement for a change.
You hear me Warner? Or are you not allowed to leave the area because of your tax liens? lol
@AkronWatch who ignorantly stated:
"This is a very serious campaign and it is VERY clear that the mayor is worried. If any of you listened to his little internet "interview" yesterday from a biased friend conducting the interview, you would have FINALLY realized it that the recall effort is alive and doing well! www.akronwatch.org"
All elections are serious campaigns you idiot. Of course the Mayor is worried. It's an election. You would be too. That's why you've never been chose as Employee of the Month at Rally's. Because YOU SUCK! Jerkoff.
@GainSome...
You take the cake.
You challenge me about my questioning the 'major city' designation, then turn around and point out that Cruisemaster missed a city that is larger than 2 others he did list.
Sheesh...
Good Luck , Mayor. . . I'm for Ya . . .
@Overtaxed Voter, you did not challenge the 8 he listed. You asked how he determined "major". You are a fool.
Sloven...
You are just what Plusquellic wants...someone who will send money to support his campaigns, but can't vote for or against him.
According to the Don, it's good to be the king.
@Gain Some...
I'll stick to my guideline of what makes an Ohio community a "major city". That is having a workforce of 100,000 or more.
Only 5 cities fit that criteria. They are:
Akron
Cincinnati
Cleveland
Columbus
Toledo
@Retired Cop Who Knows,
"Gain Some Reality - Excuse me.....from 16 billion in 1986 to over 800 million now. That's only a 784 million dollar increase...chump change!!"
Actually, that is a decrease of @$15.2 Billion based on your post. I guess The Don has done a pretty good job with his 95% debt reduction. I would rather our city be saddled with a measly $800M than $16B!
:0)
Hope the FOP gets the vote out!
I love it. Vote him out. Then Strickland and then Obama.
I personally know some of the people on Plusquellic's campaign staff, and I can confirm that the people seen in the march were Plusquellic's campaign workers. In fact, you've probably had one come to your door if you live in the city. I watched the video of this on WKYC; the people at the BOE seemed awfully friendly to the group. I don't trust them to be impartial in all of this.
One sad fact is that news of this recall has not reached many of my fellow soldiers who are activated reservists and deployed soldiers. We took into good confidence when we voted for the mayor that our votes would count, not that someone would turn right around and recall him and not give us the proper notification to cast another ballot if we were able.
It was only by happenstance that I was an Ohio.com member, now it has fallen to me to ask the other service men and women I know from Akron whether or not they have heard of this recall election. Most of them had not heard of it, they were keeping their noses to the grindstone protecting the same citizens like Mendenfail that were content for them not to have a say in the government they will have to come back to.
Dear Mendenfail, you belong in a federal prison for tax evasion.
some people look at mayor don and say look at what he has done-but he only did what any mayor would of done and even then in a corrupt fashion-i look at mayor don and say look at what he should of done but did not-with people in akron as afraid of the police as they are the gangs it is time for a change
maybe the next mayor will do something about gangs and drughouses and stripper bars-under mayor don all we get are traffic tickets
vote for the recall get this ego maniac out of office
@spoofleem, the people at the Election Board are friendly to EVERYONE. It does not show that the election is rigged because they are friendly. Take your conspiracy theory and go away.
Russ Pry, Irene Shapiro, Tina Merletti (sp?), and the rest of the ELECTED officials pictured here, and have come forward to support Plusquellic
NEED TO BE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE IN THEIR NEXT ELECTION!
Russ, Irene, Tina, and the rest of the ELECTED officials pictured here, and have come forward to support Plusquellic
SHOULD BE REPRESENTING THE VOTERS WHO VOTED THEM INTO OFFICE, NOT ABUSING AND ABUSING THEIR POSITIONS FOR PERSONAL OPINION.
Elected officials SHOULD REMAIN IMPARTIAL with regards to personal opinions.
SHAME ON YOU Russ Pry, Irene Shaprio, Tina M., and the rest of you. Readers, take note of our ELECTED officials who are using and abusing their status to support Plusquellic ... AND VOTE THEM OUT OF OFFICE NEXT ELECTION!
I'll bet he voted to recall himself.
@ Jestere- thanks so much for correcting the typo on the year. Common sense would prevail that all know that it is this YEAR on June 23, but glad you caught it as we know now that at least one reads www.akronwatch.org. We will correct the error- to err is human!
@ Bilbo- why is the mayor and his handful of supporters SO concerned about the recall? If the good ol' boy Donny has done such a great job in which the ABJ thinks he has, he would have nothing to worry about right? right? www.akronwatch.org
RUNUTS- YOU are EXACTLY RIGHT on these elected officials- they are voted in to represent their constituents NOT their personal views on a buddy of theirs. www.akronwatch.org
Guessin' Dastardly Don better cancel that tee time June 24 at Mugged Run. Unless, of course, he intends to pay the greens fees out of his own pocket...
spoofleem,
There's nothing to worry about. The poster known as Miss Anne Thrope works for the BOE and she's been plenty critical of Plusquellic on these boards. She has your back.
RUNUTS,
Good luck getting those folks voted out. It must be frustrating having your vote go against you time after time.
SANEO (aka akronwatch),
None of your individual members was able to answer my question of why the Subcontractor's Association of Northeast Ohio is SO concerned about the recall (when most aren't Akron citizens). Why won't they address the allegations? All they have to do is address the allegations of them & Larry Parker trying to buy influence and this will all go away.
The silence on their, and your, part speaks volumes. Come out of the shadows and tell the people what you have to gain.
BETA: "{{{Just because someone says or charges something stupid doesn't mean I should validate the stupidity with an answer}}}
Or TOJ won't answer because there isn't an answer."
Me: Right, I agree with you. There is no answer for almost everything you've said. Well, unless "huh? really?" is an answer.
Spirit of Reagan
Richfield, OH
Posted 12:07 AM, 05/28/2009 I love it. Vote him out. Then Strickland and then Obama.
Yeah, because Taft and Bush were doing such a good job, lets bring back Republican rule for life, because they'll make everything better. (Trickle that down your back)
RUNUTS,
What are you trying to say that those people don't have a right to vote in the recall election? That they can't support the mayor?
What will of the constituents should they follow, the one where people voted the mayor into office? or the approx 4000 malcontents that signed petitions to have him recalled?
You should change your name to IAMNUTS
thats not what runuts is saying- these elected officials are abusing their elected official status. They are NOT speaking on a personal level, they are speaking as a councilperson, county executive, aps board member, secretary of state rep, etc- BIG DIFFERENCE! www.akronwatch.org
you people are funny!
I don't know why Runts wants to vote anyone out... everyone knows its far easier to attempt to recall them.
Why was the City of Akron deficient in salting the roads this Winter? Why is it not paving your streets this Summer? Why are the sewer problems continually being ignored? The City of Akron is broke and Plusquellic knows it. Income tax receipts are down by the millions of dollars from December through March. Given our overwhelming debt of $760 million dollars we have lost the ability to respond to this economic downturn.
Posted are the tax receipt documents on www.changeakronnow.com under the Evidence link.
Knowing most, but not all, of the facts exposed on www.akronwatch.org and www.changeakronnow.com, it makes me VERY concerned about those elected officials who support Plusquellic. County Executive Russ Pry supports Plusquellic, knowing the facts? Sommerville supports Plusquellic knowing the facts? Merletti supports Plusquellic knowing the facts? Irene supports Plusquellic, knowing the facts? We could go on and on.
All of the above, AND the surrounding city Mayors, are supporting Plusquellic, and know the facts presented.
Remember this the next time they are up for re-election. Do you really want to vote for someone who supports a Mayor who has bankrupted and run Akron into the ground???
Clarification: Most, but not all, of the facts meaning ...... there is ALOT more facts to come!!!!
RUNUTS,
After you finish checking over your site in self-adulation, check out one of many stories about other cities facing declining revenue. So, macro-economic factors affecting Akron are grounds for recall? Absolutely terrific and sound logic. No flaws at all.
For instance:
http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20090519/NEWS0108/905200319/
RUNUTS,
So because Akron is seeing a loss in revenue the Mayor and everybody else should be voted out? Because its there fault companes all over are laying people off or paying people less?
LIke TOJ says, your logic is terriffic and sound NOT!
PS Keep bringing out those "facts" which are nothing more than tiny tidbits of information slanted to make everybody look bad. But where is "the rest of the story" (its happening everywhere).
I wonder what the loss of the Goodyear jobs would have done to tax revenue? You know, the project that the pro-recall crowd loves to hate?
@Original. Where do you get that the pro-recall people are opposed to Goodyear jobs? All of us understand the importance of corporate headquarters being located in Akron. Plusquellic's political career parallels the loss of most of the tire jobs here. What steps did he take to save those jobs in almost 40 years on the public payroll? I don't think Plusquellic has done particularly well with the current Goodyear project. There is no signed agreement. Lichter has financial problems. The agreement that I read about was for a ridiculously short 5-year commitment by Goodyear.
warnermendenhall,
Where do I get that? Ohio.com comments.
Regarding the actual manufacture of tires, are you really holding that against Plusquellic? It's a flat out money issue. If one of your biggest cost components cost x% more than in Alabama, Tennessee, etc, where will you produce? I honestly can't answer the question about what efforts were made by the City, County and State (remember, all of those are involved in the current deal) from several decades ago. If you can, let's see it.

hum- post gone again
Mendenhall,
You are a real piece of work, blaming the mayor for the downfall of the rubber industry in Akron that started almost 40 years ago. But if he traveled or spent money to keep jobs here its "wasteful". And your cohort akronwatch can't seem to post anything useful and now is paranoid that their posts are being deleted.
If it weren't so sad it would be funny.
@Steve, If you look at Plusquellic's history he has always acted as a facilitator for corporate decisions to take jobs out of Akron. His travels are still about that. He is helping Akron companies set up shop in China. We posted a revealing video on www.changeakronnow.com under the Video link.
@Original, what I saw on the other comments was skepticism about the Mayor's plans. It is warranted. When we called BassPro in mid-2007 about whether or not they were locating in Akron, they told us no. Nevertheless, there was story after story in 2007 about BassPro coming to town. Plusquellic has no sense of honor or honesty. Plusquellic cheated to win in 2007, he lied about BassPro, he lied about the Sewer Lease, he lied about his girlfriend, and he spent scholarship funds to pay for Issue 8 campaign materials. He is not the type of person who should be in a leadership position.
"Skepticism"
Let's be honest, you'd criticize any decision that was made. And as far as " not [being] the type of person who should be in a leadership position," that's your opinion, which shouldn't drive a recall campaign. Once again, run in the election or help a strong candidate to unseat DP in the regular election. Coups are for third world countries, not Akron, OH.
Amen, brother Warner! The truth hurts those Plusquellic supporters. Too bad they won't reveal which City workers or tax abatement receivers they are. The must have alot to lose when Plusquellic is recalled.
Absentee ballot? Are they planning on being out of town? Maybe one last business trip?
@warnermendenhall, I never once heard the Mayor or his staff say Bass Pro was coming to Cleveland. I heard them say negotiations were ongoing. The only commitment I ever heard made was that Bass Pro agreed to research the possibility,
This sounds like the perfect Reason for a debate over the recall. Lets let the two sides get in front of the people and confront each other. I bet you Mendenhall and company would be more then willing. I also bet Plusquellic will refuse because he knows he will be made a fool of. For the Two big mouths here who are so PRO Don, get your Mayor to come forward and answer the charges against him in a public forum. If he can answer the questions completely and honestly then he should have no problem defeating a recall attempt. So come on Steve and Original, get your man out there for a public forum. You two bigmouths seem to be so confident and know everything, bring out your man.
@The Voice of Reason, I agree. But I do not even know if a debate is necessary as he is not running against someone. A list of prepared question for the recall effort that are answered completely would go along way to filling in the blanks that exist.
Does Plusquellic buddy, Chrissy Hynde, pay Akron taxes on her income, she she lives here part time? Humm, something to look into.
Discussion. Plusquellic and Mendenhall. WNIR Tom Erickson Show. Akron DEMANDS answers from Plusquellic.
If you want a safe prosperous Akron vote GOODBYE Plusquellic .
Warner,
Ohh boy, a revealing video? Really, I'll have to go watch that, because I'm sure its not biased at all against the mayor. I think its funny that you and the recall supporters think all of this stuff you put on that web site is like some great investigative reporting. So everything the mayor does travelling isn't to help create jobs in Akron, its really to help send jobs overseas. That simply your moronic opinion, and not based on any facts.
Lie Detector,
Yep that's all it will take, vote him out, and then let's see who takes over. Surely the economy in Akron will turn around immediately. Thousands of new jobs will be created just because Don is no longer the mayor. Maybe Goodyear, Firestone and others will re-open huge tire plants again.
Maybe not Goodyear or Firestone plants, but without Team Sponge and their UAW drinking buds in charge, maybe a nice new Toyota or Honda hybrid battery plant.
Think Don's wasting his time traveling abroad? Look at some of the fruits of his labor. Its paying off people...
"Two Israeli Companies to Open Offices in Akron"
http://www.wksu.org/news/story/23474
Put that in your pipe and smoke it re-callers.
ISRAELI COMPANIES MAKE MOVE TO AKRON
INTERNATIONAL MARKETING BY CITY PAYS OFF
(05/29/09) - You may soon move more quickly through airport security thanks to Mayor Don Plusquellic’s efforts to bring new jobs to Akron.
The relationship that Plusquellic started with the signing of an agreement with Israel’s Targetech Innovation Center is creating more new jobs, already, and the promise of a smoother and better security process at our nation’s airports.
Two Israeli companies announced today their plans to move into Akron’s award-winning Global Business Accelerator on South Main Street. The Accelerator currently houses 47 entrepreneurial ventures providing 257 jobs for Akron area residents.
Added to the list today are Teraphysics Security Inc (TSI) and ICS (Innovative Communication Solutions, LLC).
Mayor Don Plusquellic is pleased to see the progress in the relationship and the jobs coming to Akron. "We have worked hard to market ourselves around the world, and this is the proof that there are dividends to these investments," he said. "Even before companies have graduated from Targetech, other companies in Israel are now interested in Akron, and businesses here that might be interested growing in the Israeli market are also coming to us."
Teraphysics Security Inc. specializes in homeland security via sophisticated technology that would add the first new procedures at airports and other checkpoints since the implementation of X-ray scanners and metal detectors more than three decades ago.
Innovative Communication Solutions is a wholly owned subsidiary of CSI, Cellular Systems International in Israel. It develops and supplies cellular-based remote management of critical data for use anywhere a client needs real time detection, monitoring, control and repairs.
Haha...naysayers...
The mayor has done a good job, overall. He does have some personality issues...but so do all of us posting here. The hatred on this blog is amazing...because we are all anonymous, right?
Some cities allow spending for trips and such, to bring business to the city...most of it is done by an economic development person and not the mayor. Don does it for Akron, as he has done many other things both good and bad.
In the end, the city has wasted precious tax dollars on an issue that was JUST decided by the voters not that long ago. This personal axe is an expensive one to grind.
