By Beacon Journal staff
POSTED: 07:44 a.m. EDT, Jun 23, 2009
Today is the recall election of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic — the first mayoral recall attempt in the history of the city.
Voters will decide on whether longtime mayor Plusquellic will remain on the job for the rest of his elected four-year term, which runs through 2011, or be forced to leave office early, after the votes are certified on July 14.
A ''for'' vote is in favor of ousting the mayor. An ''against'' vote is in opposition of the mayor being recalled.
A total of 8,000 absentee ballots were requested in the recall. Ballots can still be dropped off at the Summit County Board of Elections, but it's too late to mail them. The board is located at 470 Grant St.
Voting is at your normal polling place unless you received a notice from the elections board citing a different location.
The polls opened at 6:30 a.m. today and will remain open until 7:30 p.m.
Results are expected by 9:30 tonight. The Beacon Journal will post them at http://www.ohio.com.
Here are some stories from the polls today:
3 p.m. - United Steelworkers Local 7 Union Hall
Plusquellic supporters have been out most of the day canvassing door-to-door trying to make sure people get out to vote.
‘‘Everybody knows the election is based on who you can get out to vote,’’ said City Councilwoman Kelli Crawford, D-Ward 10. Working out of the United Steelworkers Local 7 Union Hall, she set out for voters in her ward.
‘‘We're going to identified supporters reminding them to vote,’’ she said. ‘‘We identified them as being against the recall, from phone calls, Web sites and different community events.’’
As she went door-to-door this afternoon on Goodyear Boulevard, she gave her name and told her constituents she was their councilwoman, at times saying, ‘‘We've talked before.’’
One person said she wasn't able to get out to vote, another said she already voted and another took the pamphlet information on the mayor and thanked Crawford. Many people weren't home, so she left pamphlets.
The woman unable to get out asked Crawford if she was for or against the recall, Crawford said ‘‘against’’ and the woman nodded in agreement.
Another volunteer, Bryan Hoffman, said he had been out knocking on doors in neighborhoods since 8:30 a.m.
‘‘Most people weren't home or on their way to work,’’ he said. ‘‘The people who were home said they were retired and had either already voted or were going out to vote soon.’’
There were 35 volunteers canvassing from the East Akron headquarters on Kelly Avenue.
‘‘There are four different locations for each quadrant of the city; North, South, East and West, plus the Democratic headquarters,’’ said Sharon Conner, who said the group wanted to make sure there was coverage throughout the city.
Crawford, who has only been on council for a year and a half said her ward includes Goodyear and she admires Plusquellic for seeing that project through and fighting for jobs.
‘‘What if it's not a priority for the next person?’’ Crawford asked. ‘‘It means everything to me and I'm not ready to let that go.’’

2:29 p.m. - John Brown House
The recall election overshadowed one of Plusquellic's few public appearances today as voters decided his fate.
Plusquellic attended an event this morning to mark the city's the 150th anniversary of the famed abolitionist's last visit to the city he called home from 1844 to 1854.
At the event, the mayor was cornered by local television crews asking about the recall.
Also in attendance was a three-man crew hired by the U.S. Conference of Mayors to film and produce a documentary on the recall attempt. The documentary is scheduled to be used at Harvard and New York universities.
Plusquellic acknowledged that it is a historic day for the city.
- Bill Lilley
2:20 p.m. - Summit County Board of Elections
The Summit County Board of Elections Director Marijean Donofrio said there have been no lines so far today at the polls.
‘‘It is busier than it was earlier today,’’ she said. ‘‘Things are picking up some.’’
Donofrio said close to 9,000 absentee ballots were requested for the special mayoral recall election.
As of 2 p.m., 7,821 absentee ballots were returned. Today, 150 ballots came in the mail and 30 were dropped off.
Most of the people who stopped by the board of elections came to vote, but the board is not a polling location today. Workers looked up names and redirected them to their polling precincts.
One van driver randomly picked up a dozen people to vote, but also ended up seeking help from workers to find out where they should vote. His riders were mostly from different polling places.

1:20 p.m. - Case Elementary School
Having spent time growing up in the South, the right to vote is something 82-year-old Akron resident Sarah Gurley has never taken lightly.
It doesn't matter the issue, whether it was casting her vote for Barack Obama in the historic presidential election last November or voting against the recall of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic, her vote was going to be counted.
Gurley, using her trusty walking cane, made her way up the sidewalk at Case Elementary School and through the doors to the polls.
Moments later, she exited the school, proudly wearing her coveted ‘‘I Voted’’ sticker on her chest.
‘‘I can remember times when my father had a tough time voting,’’ Gurley said. ‘‘I think about all the lives that were lost giving us the chance to vote and I think the young people just don't seem to care. I'm on my way out and I'm still going to vote and these young people need to come out and vote.’’
Gurley's daughter, Vanzi Wright, learned from her proud mother to cherish the right to vote. Vanzi drove her mother to Case so Gurley could vote.
Vanzi, wearing a T-shirt that proudly showed the American flag, pulled her car in front of the school so they could exercise their right.
‘‘She's been talking about the recall and making sure I could take her to vote for the last week or so,’’ Vanzi said. ‘‘She always shared stories with me about how she didn't have the freedom to vote when she was growing up. So now, she takes advantage of every election and votes on every issue.’’
As for Gurley's opposition to the recall, she said it's unnecessary and stands by Plusquellic.
‘‘For one, I think it's a ridiculous waste of time and a waste of the taxpayers' money,’’ Gurley said of the recall. ‘‘Mendenhall should get himself cleaned up before he starts talking about anyone else.’’
Patty Marriott was another voter in support of Plusquellic.
‘‘This is just a travesty and as a taxpayer, I'm offended,’’ Marriott said. ‘‘Run against [Plusquellic] or leave him alone. I'm not a blue-dog Democrat who votes along the party line but this is ridiculous.’’
Regardless of the outcome, Gurley knows she did the right thing by voting and she hopes that others did, too.

Noon - Downtown Akron
A caravan supporting the recall gathered at Walter Mendenhall's office on North Union Street before noon. Participants wore T-shirts that read Recall Mayor Don and We Can Change Akron Now.com buttons.
Cars lined up with painted signs and messages supporting the recall painted on the vehicles. Akron resident Miss Tia led the way with ‘‘Save Akron, For the Recall’’ and ‘‘Power to the People’’ painted on her car. Joe Conrad drove a 1930 Ford Model A pickup truck decorated with small flags and signs that read ‘‘Recall Mayor Don’’ and ‘‘For the Recall.’’
At 11:30 a.m., the caravan of six cars got rolling and circled the downtown area first. As they turned the corner on High Street while honking their horns, people stood on the sidewalks shaking their heads no.
In front of City Hall, one man batted his hand down several times then shooed them away.
As the caravan drove by the police station, two officers heading in opposite directions smiled at each other and ignored the caravan.
The caravan was to continue across the All-American Bridge into North Akron, then into East Akron and was to meet back at Mendenhall's office. Mendenhall did not participate in the caravan.

10:45 a.m. - Country Diner, East Market Street
A sign at the Country Diner on East Market Street, owned by Ed Davidian, a leader in the recall effort, says ‘‘Remember our children when you vote today.’’
- Marilyn Miller
10:30 a.m. - Goodyear Memorial Pavilion, Newton Street
Pat Henry was among the 147 people who voted by 10:30 this morning at Goodyear Memorial Pavilion on Newton Street.
‘‘I think it doesn't matter whether I like Plusquellic or not. He was voted in and in two more years voters can decide whether to vote for him again if he runs,’’ she said.
‘‘This recall is wasting taxpayers' money, which was the big complaint about Plusquellic and Mendenhall is doing exactly that.’’
Robert Cuckler said he is supporting the mayor.
‘‘All he has done for the city of Akron has been top-notch. I don't like the attacks by Mendenhall. The mayor has made the activities of the city of Akron family oriented.’’
- Marilyn Miller
10 a.m. - Reservoir Park Community Center, Hillside Terrace
Leone and David Gindlesperger, who voted at the Reservoir Park Community Center on Hillside Terrace this morning, said they did not support the recall effort.
‘‘I believe the city is thriving under the mayor's administration. Look at what he's done with Lock 3. He's been good for the city, ’’ said Leone.
David, her husband of 30 years, agreed.
‘‘$200,000 is a waste of taxpayers' money (for the recall). The money could have had a better use. And he says the mayor is misusing money. It doesn't make sense.’’
- Marilyn Miller
10 a.m. - First Baptist Church, Shatto Avenue
At the Ward 8 polls at the First Baptist Church on Shatto Avenue, voting was slow but steady this morning with a few voters in each precinct at a time.
This is a ward that has traditionally been a supporter of Plusquellic and has been targeted by both campaigns.
In the Ward 8-H precinct, 60 people had voted by 10 a.m.
Wendy Burgoyne, who has lived in Akron all of her life, voted against the recall.
She said voters kept Plusquellic in office in the last election just two years ago.
‘‘That was enough. That's what elections are for.’’
She said she didn't agree with the extra expense of a special election just because Plusquellic wasn't liked by some and to satisfy a personal vendetta.
- Stephanie Warsmith
9:15 a.m. - Rankin Elementary School, Storer Avenue
‘‘I think our mayor has done a decent job. I don't think it was a good idea for a recall,’’ said Luther Maxwell.
‘‘I think he (the mayor) does an outstanding job, if you look around and see everything that's been done in the last 15 years under his leadership,’’ said Judge Carol Dezso.
- Marilyn Miller
9 a.m. - Perkins Middle School
Two precincts that normally vote at Westminster Presbyterian Church were moved to Perkins Middle School for this election due to vacation bible school at the church, a poll worker said. Signs at the church redirected voters who may have missed the notification.
About 30 people had voted in Precinct 4-N by 9 a.m. and it had been ‘‘not as busy as we expected,’’ said the poll worker.
- Lynne Sherwin
8:55 a.m. - Lawton Street Community Center
Fifty-one people have voted in this precinct at the Lawton Street Community Center.
Kathy (did not give her last name) from Smoke-In Joe's said she had a personal issue with the mayor over the Kenmore Parade a few years ago. She said Smoke-In Joe's was unable to get a permit to participate in the parade.
‘‘It seems like he's for the majority and ignores the little people,’’ said after voting.
Another man who was voting at Lawton Street who did not want to give his name disagreed.
‘‘Too much politics, I don't see anything the mayor did wrong. He never had to lay off any people in the city. The recall is wrong.’’
- Marilyn Miller
8:45 a.m. - Maple Valley, Copley Road
Thirty people have voted at Maple Valley on Copley Road.
- Marilyn Miller
8:30 a.m. - Buchtel High School
Twenty-five people have voted at Buchtel High School.
‘‘This (the recall effort) is a bunch of mess. As much as the mayor has done for the city and Mendenhall should pay his taxes,’’ said Mirone Tickett.
- Marilyn Miller
8:00 a.m. - Summit County Board of Elections
Few problems were reported this morning as the recall election got under way, said Marijean Donofrio, director of the Summit County Board of Elections.
Two poll workers overslept, causing two of the 72 polling places to open late, said Donofrio. Also, poll workers at one voting place reported that two scanners used to record votes were not working properly, but it was due to a mistake by a booth worker.
- Marilyn Miller
7:20 a.m. - Akron's King Elementary School, Ward 1
Kyle Brooks, 42, an English teacher at Highland High School in Medina County, rode his bike to the polling place to vote against the recall.
‘‘This is a complete waste of time,’’ said Brooks, who lives in Akron's Highland Square neighborhood, of the special election to recall the mayor. ‘‘I am supporting the mayor on this one.’’
Also supporting Plusquellic at the same voting location was Sharon Eubank, 65, a school secretary.
‘‘I voted against it,’’ she said. ‘‘I think it should never have happened.’’

I fail to see the entire plan.
If the mayor is forced to leave office (and I doubt this will happen) then who will take his place?
A deputy mayor? !
Have I missed something, here?
None of this makes much sense.
I voted! Have to admit being #10 shocked me since I was there at 6:45! I was expecting to be #3 or 4.
All we need to do is have someone take over who will continue to do the things that Don does that make sense, and refuse to do the things that are stupid, and to behave.
Wouldn't be too hard.
Don't worry about it, the recall is going to fail anyway and the Mayor will still be the Mayor.
Bye bye Donnie....don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Today is the day: VOTE AGAINST THE RECALL!
I believe the Law Director, Max Rothal, takes over until there is another election for mayor, probably in September. Plusquellic would not be allowed to run.
Yes Max Rothel will take over, but don't worry the Recall will fail
Total shame that the JEDD "participants" can't vote today. Don would be OUT. In all these years of JEDD, the only part of the contracts upheld is the part where Akron collects our INCOME TAX. Yes, that's what it is ~ income tax. And look what he (Don) has done with the monies?!?!?! We can pay, but we can't vote. Again, shame, shame, shame....
get it over with. the damage is done. akron has been the pit of state for years and that will continue. i am so happy i was able to escape with my family, i pray for those that have remained behind.
Just received this text message from an unknown number…

Maybe this is a political wake up call to the fat Democrate political parasites in Akron.
There are folks in Akron that work for a living and is tired of the lazy, the crooks and the social parasites getting all the benefits on ourf dime.
That is why the politicians hold Akron down make it a welfare city so they can get re elected
@akroudy, so you would prefer to have your those that remain behind move to the likes of Cleveland, Canton, Youngstown, Dayton, or Toledo? What have you been smoking????????????????
Akroudy,
Not everyone has had your same experience. Many have been able to thrive.
Being recalled in the first place shows what a leader Plusquellic is. He is like Bill Clinton who was impeached even though his Democratic croonies bailed him out. If akron wants to regain some respect thewy will vote Don out. If they keep him they look foolish and stupid like they appear.
vote to recall this eyesore.
Recall prediction...
for the recall 44%
against recall 56%
after the recall the naysayers will be on to the next topic....
real voice of reason,
No it shows exploitation of the charter. Credit to those who exercised that option, but it doesn't show anything that you referenced. The 3,774 voters (2% of Akron) who signed the petitions don't speak for the rest of us. If I'm wrong, we'll find out tonight.
I was hoping the people with torches were outside my voting area, but they were no where to be found. This is a plain ole' witch hunt and I think the changeakron now should front the bill for this ridiculous vote.
JERRY That's called taxation without Representation.SOUNDS LEGAL DOSN'T IT.

after becoming educated and informed, remember to ...
vote FOR the RECALL
Don is still upset that he had to share All-City quarterback honors with another player that wasn't as good as him but happened to be the son of a prominent coach. Say goodnight Donnie Boy.
Looks like a pretty large turnout. That can only be good for the Don!
VOTE FOR THE RECALL!!!
Remember, it means one less idiot in office :)

real voice of reason.Just remember the good work the id(DON)has done for this city.We are in the 20 weakest cities in the nation. That should show you the state of mind id and his supporters are in when they say what a great job it has done.
real voice of reason.Bill Clinton took an intern and showed her how to properly shoot off a rocket. So she can have experience when she went over to NASA.Now that was no reason to get impeached.
could
I'd love to have an actual choice. Not a choice between voting for the Don or not voting (last election). At least if he's recalled we'll get to choose between two new idiots in the fall, assuming there are two people in Akron that are foolish enough to want that job.
A few of you are saying the recall will fail. Well, I asked everyone I spoke with this morning if they were going to vote. They all said no, don't worry he won't be recalled. He will still be the Mayor. With that mindset, he will be recalled. Those recall nuts will be out in droves while his supporters are sitting back because they don't think it will happen.
Jerry, Stephen
You have representation, called township trustees and councilpeople. Living in a JEDD you are actually collecting income that you would not normally be able to collect being a township. If you don't like it, move to Akron.
Without the quarter-million people still living in Akron, where would Fairlawn be? Where would Bath be? Coventry? We are the ones coming to your towns to spend money. Eating out, buying gas, going to Summit Mall and the Portage Lakes. Get off that fiddle.
stephend6 - where is that ranking from? curious. i can't believe that's true.
I was only the 12th voter at my voting place at 10 am. PLEASE GET OUT AND VOTE.
stephen; That would mean the likes of Youngstown, Canton, Cleveland, Toledo, Dayton & Cincinnati are in far worse shape than Akron. Which of those cities would you prefer to reside ? Think about it?
Well, Akroudy, as Akronite that left many years ago and moved to the Mountains of Colorado, I escaped. As a woman I have had every opportunity to succeed in the West and I have. I know for a fact that my employment success has been far greater then if I had stayed in the Corporate offices of Firestone Tire & Rubber Co where I worked. There was rampant discrimination against our sex in that company at that time. I easily broke the glass ceiling in Colorado where woman got the vote in the 1800's.
What is more important...I know nothing about the recall and the mayor but I wish for the current residents of Akron a great city where they can raise their families, find equal opportunity in their employment and worship their God in whatever fashion. Many people cherish it as their home. No matter what, we all deserve a life where we can take action, become educated and accomplish our goals. Let's be gracious and send positive improvment as a result of this election. The current residents of Akron need to be proud of their city. I'm proud of Akron and the education I received at Akron North High School that enabled me to grow.
stephend6,
"20 weakest cities"
Source?
I still maintain the easiest way to avoid such problems in the future is to have the mayoral contest be a nonpartisan election. Top two finishers in the non[artisan primary go to the general election.. period.. In that way everyone gets to vote and no one can complain about the process as it will be totally open.

A vote to keep Mayor Minusquellic is a vote AGAINST the police and fire departments. He holds a grudge a long time and he isn't going to forget that the police and fire departments crossed him and went to the Ohio Supreme Court to reverse the residency rule. Plus, he has also just lost a suit requiring the city to pay for police and fire retirees' medical benefits.

Is it me, or does it seem like the reporter of this article is only posting comments from people who are voting against the recall?? I knew the ABJ was shady like that, but come on there are other people in this town who want Donny gone. Talk to the real people of this city who know what he truly is and has caused, not the other crooked, cheats who will do everything in their power to rig this election like they have the past 20 years. Be a real newspaper and report both sides of the story, not the one you think everyone wants to hear about!!
VOTE FOR THE RECALL!!!!!
jschnell106 I live in upper west side Akron
@Stephyyyyy I agree.. seems like all the comments from the "voters" are anti-recall.. fascinating to say the least and oh so typical of every newspaper in Democrat machine cities. They always say the city is doing GREAT, even while it is falling apart all around.. Keep in mind Akron's population has declined about 20 percent since the mayor took office.. hardly a ringing endorsement to say Akron is a "vibrant" community. Not all of this is the mayor's fault to be sure, but don;t say the City is alive and vibrant when the reality is the exact opposite. If it were not for the growth of U of Akron even downtown would be moribund.

Ohio urban areas decline in 2009
Recession takes big toll on cities such as Akron
By Stephanie Warsmith
Beacon Journal staff writer
At least we're not Youngstown.
Or Toledo.
That's the wry conclusion that can be drawn from a new Brookings Institution study tracking the economic performance of the nation's largest urban areasColumbus was the only metropolitan area in Ohio ranked in the top half of the nation's 100 most populous urban areas.
Four of Ohio's metro areas — including Akron — were among the 20 ''second-weakest'' performers nationwide. Toledo and Youngstown were in the bottom 20.
The study, released Wednesday, is the first of a quarterly examination by Brookings looking ''beneath the hood of national economic statistics'' to show the country's diverse ''landscape of recession and recovery.'' The review looked at several measures, including unemployment, average wages and housing prices.
WITH an 23yr. mayor who has done such a great job. Columbus it should have said Akron.
I voted at 10:45 and was only number 31
People. How am I to support a Mayor who condoned the use of tax dollars to set up check points in which to harass motorist. Who bragged about the amount of citations issued. Who boasted about the number of vehicles towed. And who claims he's making the city safer. Yet, fails to mention that directly accross the street from his deadly check point was a reputed drug house continuously reported to police, screamed about in townhall meetings, and is well known to cause issues with neighborhood safety. Might I add that during the duration of the attack of the "killer", "make Akron safer" check point; the drug house continued to operate and it's patron's enjoyed the entertainment of officer's vs. motorist. This is only one of many, so called, operations his office has launched to supposedly clean up the city when infact the city remains in ruins. PLEASE... OPEN YOUR EYES.
The ABJ is only reporting people who are voting agains the recall because they are the only people who are voting. This "recall" won't even be close. I'm predicting an 80% "AGAINST" vote.
Whether the recall succeeds or fails is in question.
But two things now jump out at us.
1. Where is the Republican Party? Can't they put up a candidate that is acceptable.
2. One thing this does show is the need for term limits. Two four year terms is enough for the President of the US, why not Akron? Whether an official is good or bad, 8 years is enough!
@stephend6, you cannot read as usual. We are not "in the 20 weakest cities in the nation" as you boast. That is a lie on your part.
Read for youself:
We are #74 our of the 100 largest metro areas.
I continue to pray for the PEOPLE of akron. Good luck to all and I pray that you are able to escape soon. IT IS NICE TO SEE THE YOUNG MOVING OUT.
I got to my polling place today at 8:20. In my precinct (8A) I was number 38. Combined number of precincts already had over 100 votes. Ward 8 is usually heavy support for the Mayor. I don't know if this means anything, we'll all know in about 8-9 hours.
Too bad they didn't talk to anyone where I voted so they could quote people for the recall. Again, the Beacon is biased. Too bad we cannot have a paper that just reports the news and does not take sides.
Precinct 1-L had 62 cast at 11:50 when I was there.
A few posters are mad that the ABJ is biased by only reporting those supporting the mayor. As a supporter, I'd prefer the ABJ DIDN'T print the exit poll comments. Reading so many that support the mayor may cause some readers to stay home since they think he's winning.
It's your city people! Make a choice and go vote!
"A vote to keep Mayor Minusquellic is a vote AGAINST the police and fire departments. He holds a grudge a long time and he isn't going to forget that the police and fire departments crossed him and went to the Ohio Supreme Court to reverse the residency rule. Plus, he has also just lost a suit requiring the city to pay for police and fire retirees' medical benefits."
Don't forget the current lawsuit against the city by the fire department over their promotion exam. It would be nice to have a mayor that supported the APD and AFD. A mayor tough on crime will make Akron a better place to live. We need a pro cop mayor and council president.
Some points I had to consider:
1) For the city to stop swimming in the pustule of crime, the police department needs to be supported, irregardless of the feudal relationship between Don and the FOP President. Represent the city populace, not just a few with Sharptonian agendas and fight crime. Better our neighborhoods, parks, businesses and street corners by removing the thugs, bums and derelicts.
2) I am tired of seeing no plows in the North Hill area in winter, making the neighborhood streets manageable instead of folks pushing one another out.
3) For all the good things downtown and the retention of longtime businesses like Goodyear, there is a Young's Restaurant or Summit Lake neighborhood that is wasting away.
4) There have not been 100 additional cops hired because of downtown tax revenue, like it states on his literature. The department is still short on officers, which means it will take more time for their "sleds" to reach me should I need them.
5) I haven't heard anything new about what the mayor plans to do to fix these things, just what he's done. The citizenry you represent want it better. We know the history and have been bombarded with what you have done. Let's see what you can do...make things better for us.
I voted in a lawful recall election, permitted by city charter, without listening to rhetoric from either side. As an Akronite, I have the chance to ask for change in this election. Whether he stays or goes, city leaders, council and those responsible for fixing things need to step up, drop the political pandering (Marco) and make it viable to keep living here.
JOn: While I might agree with what you are saying, It is a much more valid point for an election between 2 candidates and not for a recall. If you have not liked what he has done in the past, why haven't worked to get a candidate in place to win a mayoral election and then the city could be run the way you like.
Gain Some More Reality GET A LFE YES MAN.
I'm not presented with the opportunity to choose a candidate I like, but I am presented with one to get rid of a crooked politician whose had a grip on this city for the past 20 years. Is it ideal? No, but it's a chance to get some new blood.
CORRECTION were among the 20 ''second-weakest'' performers nationwide.

Gain Some More Reality A lie IS SOMTHING YOUR MAME TOLD WHEN SHE HAD YOU.
Well said, jschnell106.
get a grip: "Where is the Republican Party? Can't they put up a candidate that is acceptable."
Republicans started abandoning urban centers beginning in the 1970s. They have since taken up residence in far flung suburbs and exurbs (i.e. Medina, Hudson, etc), apparently because they couldn't bear the thought of sharing power with blacks, liberated women and gays.
In this state, they also took control of the Statehouse and only recently have lost it due to a functional inability to live in a world beyond 1959, now 50 years out.
"One thing this does show is the need for term limits. Two four year terms is enough for the President of the US, why not Akron? Whether an official is good or bad, 8 years is enough"
We do have mayoral term limits. It's called voting for a new mayor.
And actually, the only reason why we now have Presidential term limits is because the Republicans freaked out when Franklin Roosevelt won four consecutive elections, these coming during the consecutive crises of the Great Depression and World War II.
Too bad for the Republicans, though, that they essentially screwed themselves out of having their patron St. Ronnie match FDR for time. Lucky for us, however, the 22nd amendment put the kiebash on the Bush Family's imperial designs.
Having said that, I'm still against term limits, period. Term limits are a lazy man's way of avoiding responsibility for taking an active, hands-on role in monitoring his government. Maintain awareness and you will know when it's time to send your political leaders packing.

stephend6 - i get the idea you don't fully understand what that brookings report was really saying.
Bystander Yes I do. for 23yrs. akron gave land to akron u.akron u and the hospitals are the only thing that keep akron out of the sewer.ROCK bottom.
That's the wry conclusion that can be drawn from a new Brookings Institution study tracking the economic performance of the nation's largest urban areas.
Bystander GO READ THE WHOLE STORY.
@realist, I do not think the campaign literature says "one hundred new cops hired". It is misleading as it says "100 cops funded". All they are doing is moving the money around and not adding 100 new cops
Ignorance Kills,
I agree with some of what you say, but not all. I don't think it's fair to completely write off urban Republicans. Look at a Giuliani, Bloomberg or Voinovich (a little outdated) for instance. In all cases, you had very moderate Republicans that are pragmatists. A Republican could get elected in this town if they are pragmatists and not bound by traditional ideology not relevant at the municipal level. The problem is that many party members are so stuck in pointing out "RINOs" that a candidate would have a hard time building up enough momentum. Bottom line, bring forth someone outside of the Alex, Kevin Coughlin blowhardism who is willing to actually work with people of different mindsets and they'd have a decent chance. Akron should be ruled by moderates, I could care less of the party.
Since you brought up Hudson, their Republican mayor is even opposed to this recall.
I also oppose term limits as well and your stated reasons sum up why.
@stephend6, so I get called a "yes man" for pointing out you are posting an outright lie.
I am not a "yes man" as I also criticize the mayor and his statements. i just have not been able to do it in a long time because our mayor does not talk.
I hope everyone posting has gone out & VOTED!!!! No matter what your position, it's important to exercise your right to vot!!!!
REAL VOICE OF REASON WRITES.....
"Being recalled in the first place shows what a leader Plusquellic is. He is like Bill Clinton who was impeached even though his Democratic croonies bailed him out. If akron wants to regain some respect thewy will vote Don out. If they keep him they look foolish and stupid like they appear."
To this I say you Sir, are an ignorant lemming who lives vicariously through the mindless rantings of a zealot named Mendenhall. There is no way the good citizens of Akron will recall the greatest mayor ever to serve their community. Mark my words. My only hope is that the next special election is to banish all the idiots who signed the lead idiot's petition.
Stupid people create stupid petitions and ask stupid people to sign them.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, MAYOR PLUSQUELLIC!!!
If Akron wants to regain some respect? What respect has Akron lost? Has it been a while since you drove through downtown? Dude, I live in Florida and know more about whats going on than you do. Akron has not lost an ounce of respect. On the contrary, Akron is booming compared to other cities. Have you been through 1920 (downtown Canton)? What about Tombstone (Youngstown)? The only tumbleweed drifting through Akron is between your ears. Under Plusquellic Akron is doing just fine. What the city can stand to lose is 300lbs of Mendenhall and all his mindless "croonies." Get a clue, do your own thinking, know your role and shut your mouth. I am your voice of reason. Shut up and eat your lillipop, child.
If you love Akron so much, feel free to move from Florida. There's plenty of real estate available, especially since King Don's residency restriction is off the books.
Go to the polls and
VOTE AGAINST THE RECALL!!!
I was #114 at 1:00 p.m. in my ward.
Nonvoters sit on their dead hands and whine for the majority of voters to elect candidates that defy demands of Natural Law: what Mother Nature, God, or Whatever Power decreed to be the reality of the real world, democracy, capitalism, the US Constitution, and free, fair, and affordable commerce.
Demanding every corporation, farmer, business, outsourcer sweatshop, and nonprofit, tax-exempt, organization and Church markets the cost in the wholesale and retail price of his or her product and service; Of every workers, consumers, and taxpayers living (including pension and health care). Enabling parents to love, nurse, nurture, discipline, protect, and provide, for every child (job) they conceive and fund schools, infrastructure, national security, government services, and etc.; with money derived from wages or independent business profit.
This Makes free, fair, and affordable commerce IMPOSSIBLE; Makes funding schools IMPOSSIBLE; Makes balancing every budget IMPOSSIBLE; Makes union workers, consumers, taxpayers, and America’s grandchildren’s children LIFE UNAFFORDABLE; and created the $40 trillion social security and the $9.3 trillion national debt. America’s grandchildren’s children are responsible to pay interest with until they are 18 years old. Then pay the debt with the $6.85 per hour labor wage!
I've read that three times and still don't understand the point or the relevance to the discussion at hand.
As a resident of the Baughman St. area, I have to say APD is on the ball. Last night, we had a small near-riot when a couple of women decided to fight and brought most of the surrounding neighborhoods with them. The APD was out here quickly and took one person to jail after he refused to comply with the Sergeant's order to disperse. Kudos to the APD!
I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. the man has been elected for a good many years. What's different now? Maybe now others see their way of undermining a fairly compent local goverenment. I would like to see some Positive comments about what the Opposers would actually do----- not just to trash our current mayor
Contrary to what the Beacon is reporting, the Recall Caravan was a MAJOR success. People were waving, clapping, and giving thumbs up all along the driving route.
The Recall Caravan brought alot of smiles to those who watched it drive by, and alot of support gestures made.
No Beacon employee was a part of the caravan, so they wouldn't know the major success it was. Please do responsible reporting, Beacon.
And remember ... vote FOR the RECALL
@4everrowdy If putting the City into a massive debt load is good work.. then you must LOVE Obama and the Federal Democrats.
RUNUTS,
"alot of support gestures made."
I don't think they were saying you're #1.
#1 Loren get a life you do not live in akron! #2 Farwest you also do not live in Akron!!! Stay out of local affairs!
farwest side,
To be fair, the Federal deficit has been climbing for a decade. That's not a partisan statement either. Ever since Bubba left office, things have gotten worse. That's also a tribute to Gingrich and the others in "The Revolution."
As it stands now, nobody can claim success in a partisan battle over the budget.
Jon, you must be new. Loren Eberly never takes her meds. Her post says the same thing for every situation, except she might change a word or two. This time she left out a sentence in regards to
Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Cruisemaster: You hit the nail on the head.
#1 Loren You are not a resident of Akron-- stay out of it!!! Far West DITTO Youjust don't want your work taxes to rise!!
Jason, good points. I almost forgot about Voinovich. He did bring Cleveland back up for awhile. They could certainly use someone else like him now.
You are correct that Voinovich, along with Giuliani and Bloomberg are definitely more of what the Republican Party needs -- pragmatists -- if it is going to have a meaningful future, as opposed to the current crop of batsh_t crazies on the rise, like John Kasich (ties to Sun Myung Moon of the infamous and insane Unification Church) or Sarah Palin (no introduction necessary). It's too easy to overlook the guys who are more down to earth because the kooks get so much press these days. Of course, the Dems have their own kooks and extremists, locally, in the form of none other than Warner Mendenhall.
I agree with you that Akron is a moderate town, and should continue to be governed as such. I think this is why Plusquellic has been so successful as Mayor, and why he does have the support of the few pragmatic Republicans who still exist within the city limits.
I need to get out of this cesspool they call Akron.
Still going downhill thanks to King Don, hope you people enjoy it and you had a chance to start change now but you are too blind to see "status quo" going on as Don takes his gf's on trips.
"Mendenhall predicted victory on Tuesday."

23 years as mayor of Akron is ridiculous. It's like Akron doesn't know how to vote for anybody else. 23 years is long enough to become corrupt, to make deals that line the Don's pockets. Enough already, step down.
Jester,
11/6/07:
DON PLUSQUELLIC (DEM)..... 15,895 100.00
NOBODY (REP).............. 0 0.00
A few more hours till the recall fails. better prepare for the aftermath.
Did anyone here vote at the Goodyear Pavillion on Newton St. today?
I know there are many voting stalls and 3 different voting clusters but, I only saw one ballot counting machine near the door.
Did anyone see any other ballot counting machines,(the one you slip your paper ballot into to be counted) other than the one closest to the door?
Jester,
I was curious to go back and revisit the 2003 race and I found this ironic:
http://www.wcpn.org/index.php/WCPN/news/6532/
"Bryan Williams: The mayor and his rubber-stamp city council have succeeded in changing the rules of the game mid-stream. There’s a $300 contribution limit that individuals and political entities can give to a candidate.
Williams admits that when the donation limits were first passed, he considered dropping out of the mayor’s race. But he says despite the odds stacked against him he’s committed to giving Akron voters a choice and pledges to keep going strong until November 4th."
When we went and voted today we where numbers 28 & 29 at 1:30. which to me is pitiful on both sides! i am really sick of hearing people say that there are not valid points against this mayor and his 23 year long reign. I have voiced my opinion on voting day thru the years by not voting for him... when he is the only one on the ballot. Do i trust what mendenhall has to say...could care less but i do think the mayor and his temper tantrums have went on too long. i think there should be term limits because they make it that these people feel they dont have to answer to the citizens but to give lip service before election day...after that do as they want.
Jason,
?
Do ABJ reporters stop working at 3:00 PM? Que pasa?
I voted at 12:20 PM to keep my Mayor.
And then I got a good chuckle at the caravan of beaters with neon signs honking their horns through my neighborhood. Newsflash: Sometimes people aren't laughing WITH you, they're laughing AT you.
Maybe I should've called the APD to report the nuisance?
Akron News Now had an interview with M. Donofrio that said turnout was light, possibly in the 10-15% range.
@Jester, why should the mayor step down? The people of this city are the ones that reelect him. It is up to individuals like yourself to gop out and find a better candidate and get that person elected. Until, either party does that, Don will continue to be Mayor. As a point of fact, after the last mayoral election, he alluded to the fact that this was going to be it. With the recall now here, I think you will see Don run for another term. If nothing else, just to spite Mendy.
Hopefully, after the caravan (if you call 4 cars a caravan) rode through downtown Akron, they drove to Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, Youngstown and Canton. Then they would realize how well off we are in Akron.
"And then I got a good chuckle at the caravan of beaters with neon signs honking their horns through my neighborhood. Newsflash: Sometimes people aren't laughing WITH you, they're laughing AT you."
Betamax and Old Man Grump must be hanging out with these guys today. If you happen to see two old men who look like they're lost from the retirement home...
So when the mayor retains his position tonight, anyone want to place bets which poster on here, who was for the recall is going to be the first one to say the voting was rigged.
The caravan was effective. Period.
vote FOR the RECALL
I voted against the recall. The time to vote for another man or woman was last year sometime or was it longer ago....I think the recall is stupid....but done according to the City Charter...once in awhile elected bodies must review old charters and bylaws and scratch those
laws that are not used or just not applicable to the 21st century..
@RUNUTS
You are right the caravan was effective. Everybody got to see the Mendenlosers driving the rusted-out minivans and the old pick-up truck, needlessly burning fossil fuel and creating noise pollution.
Impressive.
Uh oh.....Akron news now .com says that 2 of the mayor's strongholds are the ones with the heaviest voter turnout.
Why do people keep saying we are better off than other communities? Just because we are not as bad off as some others doesn't make us in GOOD shape..
Our City is in sorry shape.. not as bad as some others.. but hey.. one could just as easily say.. lets look at the cities around the country that are way better off than Akron and say" we are SO BAD off just look at city X, Y and Z"..
Orginal Jason- I thought perhaps the Mayors in the outlying area might have been against the recall because they didn't want their citizens to get any ideas. Mayor Robart has been in office for an awful long time too so you have to wonder if people in the burb's might start to get some idea's too. People like to jump on the bandwagon.
I'm not in Akron anymore, but I just wondered: Are there any Democrats supporting the recall, or is this just Akron's version of the "tea parties"? Get it our of your systems, gentlemen. Rush is about to come on, and give us our marching orders.
I noticed out the 16 little news bits one was pro recall was was slightly towards it(Country Kitchen) and all the rest were either for the Mayor or neutral. ABJ leans towards the mayor so I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised by their bias.
How soon till we recall Obama & company?
4everroudy
I drove through downtown today. There are so many more boarded-up stores then the last time I was there, and very few people milling around. I saw downtown workers, that was about it. Remember that don stole the Aeros from Canton.
@debbinana, politicians already answer to citizens regularly in various methods. The main way is they have to get re-elected.
Your theory is term limits mean they have to answer to the people, which has some merit. But in the same breathe, it means they are a dead duck politician during their final term. Right now, they still have to do their job to get re-elected.
In the two years since I moved out of Akron, my only regret has been not being able to vote FOR the Recall today.
olfuzzster
Don Robart has critics, but he is not the abrasive, brash egomanic that the city hall hero is. I have absolutely no respect for pout-quellic.
@RUNUTS, before you call the "caravan effective" should you not wait to see what the poll results are?
"I voted against the recall. The time to vote for another man or woman was last year sometime or was it longer ago...."
King Don ran uncontested in 2007. You either voted for the Don, or didn't vote. At least now we get to vote for the Don or against him.
Must I say it again? You can't find people who are for the recall at the polls to interview because there aren't any. This whole thing is stupid and based on crybaby politics.
@farwest side, most people are coming Akron to Ohio cities which is very relevant considering they must work within the constraints of the same tax laws, state politicians, employee base, education system, state economy, etc. It is a very relevant comparison.
@srilongka, the spokesman of the recall effort is a democrat. It is not a partisan effort.
@ Iggy - ((chucklin')) Wrong again.
Actually, I was in Macedonia donatin' my time for a disabled child today.
@GSMR If we use that criteria then yes.. Toledo, and Y-town and Canton are worse off.. The only reason that Akron is not in the same boat is SUMMA and U of Akron.. If U of A did not move downtown, I would surmise that downtown would be a ghost town except on Aeros game nights.
Keep in mind that the Akron population is dwindling at an alarming rate. I would not be surprised if it drops below 200K after the next census. So yes you may be able to say we are better off... but BAD is BAD just a matter of degrees.
(blank) I will agreem with that-Mayor Robart does a pretty good job of getting along with everyone EXECPT Mayor Don.
Gain Some-in a post by Steph6 you said you aren't a "Yes Man" to the Mayor that you haven't criticized the mayor because he hasn't talked in "a long time". Could you define a long time since he sure managed to talk just fine to that parking lot attendant.
Voted against the recall and now I'm gonna sit and listen to Tom Erickson on the radio freak out after the mayor stays in office.
@Jon, he did not run uncontested. He ran against Finley so there was a challenge. The Republicans for some weird reason decided to not run anyone. People should be worried that the local Republican party is not doing their part in the political process.
@farwest side, all cities have leading employees driving the economy. Listing a few in Akron and saying if they leave does not prove anything since you can say the same about every municipality.
Other than Polsky and the hotel/dorm, which both are not really driving downtown usage, where has UA exactly "moved downtown"?
From 2000 to 2009, it has dropped about 4%. It would need to drop 4% in just one year to hit your prediction.
There is no measurement of bad and good if you do not compare against something else.
@Gain some more ignorance
When I compare Akron with other cities, I picked comparable cities: old midwest industrial cities. Please give me a list of cities in which you think we should compare Akron?
@olfuzzster, and the parking lot attendant incident happened about 4 years ago. And I spoke against it. You really have no sense of time, do you.
I can attest to two more against the recall.
KEEP THE DON!!!
@Barbara, when was the last time you drove through downtown in the past? It is very much improved since the 90s and very few boarded up storefronts now in comparison. It must have been over 20 years since you drove through last.
@The Truth is Out There, I did not complain about your cities. Did I? Pay attention.
I was pointing out to complainer farwest side that you cannot discredit all cities by saying they are not similar. The Ohio comparisons are very relevant. But I said nothing about your posts.

I bet the parking lot attendent remembers it like yesterday and so do all the voters that Mayor Don said that "there a special place in hello for them" (if I use the exact word it will get deleted so I think you guys are smart enough to figure it out since I would hate for Gain Some to jump on me for that since he/she is so quick to point out every little flaw. Would someone here know that exact date of the park lot disagreement-don't think it's been 4 long years yet, and wasn't Mendehall compared to a Nazi at some point too? Not sure on that thought it was in a headline while back. Looking for the parking lot/sewer quote dates-my lap top running slow. Thanks
Uh oh recall aint looking so good
@olfuzzster, it was summer of 2005, so yes about 4 years ago. Which means it was already considered during the last election by the voters. And the incidents you list I did say the mayor was wrong, so not a "yes man".
It seems your feathers are getting a little ruffled now that we are getting closer to the recall results and the early results show it going down.
My wife just said, "lets not forget to make out our invoices to changeakronnow and Warner".
I think she is right, but you know what they say about counting chickens before they hatch...oh heck, I would count the chickens if I were winning by 60% already.
Way to waste our time Mendenhall
time to move out of akron
The Recall folks must not have internet at their "celebration" party.
The latest results... half of the precincts are in...

WAKR has some interesting stuff broadcasting from their AkronNewsNow Web site.
Where's Old Man Grump and his crazy gang of posters at now?????????
I wonder where RUNUTS, BETA and OMG are right now? I am open to having a polite and constructive discussion tonight.
RECALL = FAIL
To all of the losers that supported the recall effort, run away now and start licking your wounds now. You got an epic spanking.

It's over. The recall is history.
Funny how all those guys for the recall just disappeared off Ohio.com lol
What a stupid waste of money!!11
.....TWO
dduckster
Wilma
I guess all the Mendy people are at Country Diner, slobbering and crying all over themselves. They can just blame it on the food though.
Shocking....Tom Erickson acting like the voters of Akron are dumb and misinformed haha.
LOL! Going to be a LOT of crow to be eaten. I'm not sure they will have the guts to show up though!
"Excuse me sir, will you sign this petition?"
-"For what"
"To Recall the Mayor"
-"Didn't we just..."
"DON'T SUPPRESS MY DEMOCRATIC RIGHT FOR THIS RECALL"
I can see it now :(
9pm...80% vote counted
Mayor Don 75%
Warner Mendenhall Group 25%
Time to pay your tax bill and jump in Summit Lake, Warner.
Take the rest of your idiot friends with you!
But Tom was calling this a close race around 7:30. How can these results be true?
I actually LIKED the cheap food at the Country Diner on a Sunday morning when I lived in that neighborhood, but I'll certainly never patronize them again. I'd hope you're all the same.
also, where's OMG???
LOL at the City worker who called in to say he voted for the recall b/c the Mayor took away his OT in place of comp time. Gee, no pay decrease, no layoffs, but heaven forbid any concession be made as thousands lose their job.
domer,
It's 9:00. He fell asleep watching Andy Griffith reruns.
So now that we've wasted taxpayers money...again...on a wasted effort by a glory hound attorney, can we start working on taking back our streets?

DONE
RowdyZ: I haven't ate there since I found out the owners are pro-life. Yet they claim they want to be given their rights while taking away those from women. Flipping hypocrites.
Erickson is having Mendenhall on in the 10 o clock hour this should be good lol
Pretty much a 3 to 1 margin against the recall. That is an old fashioned slap across the face. Maybe Warner and his minions will listen to the voters this time. Democracy does work.
I was hoping it was so lopsided in either direction that we did not have to hear about a recount.
watch how bad the don treats the police now. akron voters are fools.
I'm really now only waiting for Old Man Grump and the gang to come on here...but i guess they are all busy lol
THE RECALL IS A RESOUNDING FAILURE...HMMMM....WILL THE ITSY, BITSY COALITION FOR THE RECALL PLEASE GO AWAY? FOR GOOD?
If the group ever had a good point, (and they had 1,2 maybe even 3) they lost the intelligent voter by their tactics. Most people have a breaking point when it comes to zealots-and this group, "lost me at hello..."
hope you all like the crime because those 21 new cops will never come. you screwed yourselves now. glad I'm moving soon. guess I'll make it sooner rather than later. leave this city to the hoods and fools
guess you are all the same people who believe obamas lies
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
They are all in denial on Erickson's show tonight, it is so entertaining. Sore losers. Oh and Hey Wilma Bon Voyage
Yep, proud to say that I, along with 75000000 others, believe his lies and the Mayors.
Or maybe we can see a progressive vision through the clouds of fear and rhetoric?
All Recall supporters call Erickson and join in on being upset that the recall failed.....he can't figure out why all these people voted for Mayor Don hahahahahah
Where's Ms. Tia???????????
wilma,
Shut up and leave. Srringfield sounds like your type.
Bye Bye Wilma
Watch out!! Mendenhall just said that his wife and Tom Erickson's daughter are running for City Council.
Jax: Old Man Grump is out trying to gain support for the recall of Tallmadge's mayor. He won't show his face for awhile. Mendenhall should be made to pay the $200,000 this recall election cost Akron taxpayers. Talk about a waste of money! He'll be laying low for quite some time, probably trying to figure out how he's going to pay his tax bill.
What new and improved way will MendonHOLE waste the taxpayers money now? Except for not paying his own personal taxes???
The next step is to reveal his sad excuses for council candidates. two words hillbilly deluxe. They will be revealed on thursday. I'm embarrassed for them hahahahahahahaha. You all got beat 3-1. And you learned nothing...
It's not over.
Oh...it's over. and Tom Ericson on NIR is a Tule-bag!
Nope still here, want to laugh at you when your robbed by the akron thugs and the police come to your aid in "sleds"
thanks for the waste of tax dollars mendhall.
oh wait you dont care. you dont pay taxes.
quit stroking your ego and go back to being a tax dodging lawyer.
RUNUTS, for you people (Bob Smith, Miss Tia, Warner Mendenhall, et al)it will never be over. It's an obsession and it's creepy. Did you see the results yet? That was a spanking. Oh and Warner, thanks for wasting my tax dollars to launch your wife's campaign. And your other band of crazies that will be running on "Joe Finley's" slate
wilma,
