Just after 9 p.m., with his 3-year-old daughter, Lilly, clutching his leg, Change Akron Now organizer Warner Mendenhall conceded defeat in the attempted recall of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic.
Elections returns showed Plusquellic receiving about 75 percent of the vote.
''We have sent an important message to City Hall,'' Mendenhall said from inside the Country Diner on Akron's near-east side. ''The message got through in a substantial way. This will change the future of the city.''
Supporters chanted, ''We're winners!'' and held up their ''We're No. 1'' fingers.
Mendenhall also formally announced his wife's candidacy for Akron City Council.
Kelly Mendenhall circulated petitions for an at-large seat. She needs 50 signatures and said she will make sure she has more than enough when she files them by Thursday afternoon's deadline.
She said she chose to run because the mayor's office ''demonized'' Change Akron Now in mailings for not having a public office.
''Maybe I should do something about this,'' she said.
''This isn't how people should be treated.''
Kelly Mendenhall said she would not run for mayor, but Lilly got some laughs when she said she would run.

The sun will shine tomorrow and the temperature will be about 85 degrees. Life will go on. Unfortunately for Akron Mayor Donny Boy will still be at it's helm. Too bad - so sad!!!
For which ward seat is Mrs. Mendenhal running?
An at-large seat? The woman is delusional.
Go home. Turn out the lights on the way out.
Good luck Kelly, Warner and Lily! Thanks for all your hard work. This Akron citizen truly appreciates your efforts!
They should now sue all who organized the recall for the waste of money.
So in a nutshell the taxpayers paid $200,000 as a publicity stunt for Mendenhall's wife to get into politics. Nice ulterior motive Warner. Need someone in your back pocket?
If Medenhall seriously wants Plusquellic out of office, he should mount a campaign with a better opponent against the mayor in the next election. Recalling the mayor would only leave this city without decent leadership and in a power vacuum; we could do much worse than Plusquellic.
Does she really have a chance after all of this? She is going to be judged by all the actions of her husband and the recall, no matter how she promotes her views.
Once again as I've said many, many times: My money is on The Don
Very NICE!!!
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, MAYOR PLUSQUELLIC!! THE MAJORITY HAS SPOKEN!
:0)
Props to the mayor. . The Democrats are in control. . .
Can we please send the $220 G bill to Mendenhall himself? What a ridiculous abuse of recall. "Doesn't play well with others" hardly meets the criteria for bumping someone mid-term. Find a good candidate and wait for the actual election next time.
I wish the Mendenhall family the obscurity they richly deserve.
P.S. - Can we now start a "Run Mendenhall Out Of Town" campaign???
I like to think that would be a valuable use of taxpayer dollars!!!
:0)
" ''We have sent an important message to City Hall,'' Mendenhall said from inside the Country Diner on Akron's near-east side. ''The message got through in a substantial way. This will change the future of the city.'' "
Go figure....at the Country Slimer...eating a Davidian 5 buck crow special! Yes the message got through in a substantial way....in a 74% substantial way that your campaign was a joke and a sham! It will change the city for the future, changing of the recall laws around here.
"Supporters chanted, ''We're winners!'' and held up their ''We're No. 1'' fingers."
What a bunch of losers, chanting we're winners and were number 1...come on you just got soundly thumped at the polls. Your reality grows fainter daily! Yeah and I got a number one finger for you and it's not my index finger!
Beating the recall will not change Plusquellic. He will still be the tyrannical know-it-all who treats those who disagree with him as enemies. he will still have favorites for whom he will be generous with taxpayers money . . . . . too bad for Akron . . . . . . but majority rules
YEA for the Mayor...and the Country Dinner has lost a lot of customers for getting involved in this.
And a waster of $175,000 is SAD!!!
Well, what a waste of money that was... couldn't the vote of just waited till november? Way to waste Akron's time and money. We voted him in... and will have to suffer the consequences until he is voted out.
Thank you Akron
Bergermeister, I'm with you on "run him out of town campaign". And also with Constant Reader, "the obscurity they deserve". This whole campaign has been a sham! And a waste of taxpayer dollars! Mr. Mendenhall please take note - NO MORE RECALLS!!!
If OMG predicts sun tomorrow, I'd take my umbrella to work!
I truly hope that a loud message was received by Don Plusquellic: "Your thug, arrogant, condescending & aggrandizing attitude is wearing very thin. And, you should seriously consider changing your party affiliation to 'Republican', because your heart & allegiance is to big business, not the citizenry. But alas, this will not be the case. DP's ego has been stroked to the point of climax, and he will no doubt become unbearable...King Don, owner of Akron, Ohio. May God help us all.
We have witnessed a total lack of maturity. Warner and his friends should just GROW UP!!
Your childish and misguided campaign has been a TOTAL WASTE - - way more than anything you have accused our mayor (yes, he is still our mayor) of wasting. Take your friends and go home - we don't want you playing with us anymore!
@r m Kraus,
How can this be "too bad for Akron" if 75% of those who voted (read 1 in 4), voted for Akron? I suspect it is only "too bad for Mendenhall and his minions".
On that, he probably picked a bad time for this. With the real estate market in shambles, he will probably have trouble selling his home on his way out of town! LOL!
P.S. - Akron! Do not forget tonight! And, remember; this next election.
Vote "NO" for KELLY MENDENHALL!!!!
:0)
a total waste of taxpayer money and time...since when does the minority overrule a majority and insert their will against common sense in America (oh, that's right; the entire Bush Administration and their 3 trillion dollar giveaway and loss of commonly held civil rights?
they, the Citizens Against Common Sense, or whatever they call themselves, should have to pay for this fiasco as individuals, just like a frivolous lawsuit
Thank you Akron. You saw thru the sham created by Mendenhall and his 'bots. To Warner, stick to your law practice and sty out of politics. To those that were chanting we're number 1, you are the same people that do not want ot see and/or accept change in this city. I say to you now, love it or leave. Akron has been and will continue to be a good city to live in and the recall did nothing but give a blackeye to Akron and once again proved that Mendenhall is an idiot.
Classic. The Mayor got roughly 75% of the vote, great waste of money this recall election was. This might be the best definition of irony in real life I've seen in recent times.
Hi Starling - I'm one of those who won't eat at Country Diner again. I could put up with Davidian's rants about water parks, and the other ideas he promoted. He had some wacky ideas, but he tried to go through the correct channels to get them implemented.
But this was beyond the pale. Sorry, Ed - you lay down with dogs, you wake up with fleas!
Hey Recall Supporters...don't go away angry-just go away! ROTFLMAO I guess we won't see Mendenhall on here posting "Let the voters decide!"
I hope the APD is watching the Y Bridge tonight...I have a feeling RUNUTS, OV, OMG, Retired Cop, Beta et al might be lining up to wait their turn to jump
Mendenhalls wife and Tom Erickson's daughter running for council next...good luck there.....do as good as the recall.
welcome to akron... the next detroit. King Don is rich and will be living in Florida with your money and his gf's thanks to your support... You guys asked for it, you got it.
I also think they're #1. I'm giving them the gesture right now.
Wow this worked out really well for the recall side.
At the rate of its current decline under the Mayor's "leadership" North Hill will soon regress from it's current ghetto status -- to something on the level of Compton. No one wants to drive there during the night, and with another term under Plusquellic, and no one will want to drive there during the day.
It's difficult for me to believe that anyone currently living in North Akron can say with a straight face that the Democrats have been their allies. Good job North Hillbillies.
Can we please send the $220 G bill to Mendenhall himself?
What for? He won't pay it.
Maybe we can get a fourth or fifth lien on his house after the Fed and State govt get their money from him.
@KaraokeChris,
"I truly hope that a loud message was received by Don Plusquellic"
Trust me, with a 75% majority, it was received as a loud message!!
THE DON REMAINS!!!
:0)
Concede? How do you concede when you get your keister handed to you by a 3 to 1 margin? Did Custer concede at Little Bighorn?
Lots of angry recall people on WNIR tonight haha
Its great to be an Akronite! Well done (once again) tax paying citizens of Akron. Now I can't believe we are really going to have to listen to the Mendi-clowns continue with politics... seriously someone get Lilly outta that home!
The electorate in the City of Akron are much smarter than Mendenhal and his minions are wiling to give them credit,
They saw through all the nonsense perpetrated by these naysaying idiots, the likes of "Old Man" as he said,
"The sun will shine tomorrow and the temperature will be about 85 degrees. Life will go on."
And maybe, just maybe his mother will let him out of the basement!
@whackamole,
I "recall" (no pun intended) you posting earlier that you would leave Akron if the recall failed.
Don't let the door hit you in the #%$ on the way out! Same for OMG, Overtaxed, MissTia, RU, et al.
CONGRATS, DON!
:0)
Yea Go Plusquellic Keep up the great work your doing with Akron. Im glad the election was a waste of time. Plusquellic is a great man and he's not perfect he makes mistakes like everyone but he makes wonderful desions too.
DP has won two of the past one elections. That's quite a winning %.
Looks like the pro-Plusquellic comments are running 3 to 1 - lol
Does "concede defeat" mean the same as "go away!"?
Kelly Mendenhall is an idiot, Just like her husband
The voters have spoken ... again! Whether you like him or not, Don is the mayor. Let's stop wasting time and money and move on already.
Congrats Mayor Don....keep up the good work!!!! Mendenhall now you have plenty of time to figure out you tax issues.
Nonvoters and majority of voters of Akron supports scamming Fathers disqualified for affirmative action with white skin, Union workers, consumers, taxpayers, and America’s grandchildren’s children. To fund all stimulus packages, tax abatements, tax incentives, tax refunds, tax credit, tax exemptions; And fund lottery, casino, and keno losers, unemployed workers, aliens, waitresses that pander for life for $2.00 per hour, insubordinate, low-income, defiant of realities demands volunteers without wages, nonunion parasites willing to work for fewer wages than they can afford life; Paying with welfare checks, food stamps, housing vouchers, and Medicaid. With money derived from wages or independent business profit.
This defiance of Natural Law: what Mother Nature, God, or Whatever Power decreed to be the reality of the real world, democracy, capitalism, the US Constitution, and free, fair, and affordable commerce? Makes free, fair, and affordable commerce IMPOSSIBLE; Makes funding schools IMPOSSIBLE; Makes balancing every budget IMPOSSIBLE; Makes union workers, consumers, taxpayers, and America’s grandchildren’s children LIFE UNAFFORDABLE; and created the $40 trillion social security and the $9.3 trillion national debt. America’s grandchildren’s children are responsible to pay interest with until they are 18 years old. Then pay the debt with the $6.85 per hour labor wage!
There is no reason to believe America’s grandchildren’s children that go to bed hungry can afford life and pay this debt with money derived from wages or independent business profit in a hundred million years.
That's the funniest joke I have heard. Kelly petitioning for at-large. HAHA! The jokes are killing me on this website.
Thanks Warner for wasting my tax dollars. Please go away now.
What a waste of time and $$$$.
Oh, and congrats to Mayor Don - you deserve better!
Wonder what exotic country the Don will fly off to and celebrate?
Thanks Mayor Don...........You did a great job watching as Rolling Acres Mall fell right into the garbage can with the thugs "shopping" there.WAY TO GO DONNIE.You used to do the city well. Now you're way to comfortable and do whatever you want.I wasn't a part of this recall, but you gotta go!!!!
whackamole, have you been to Detroit lately? Please leave, like you promised. Perhaps you should move to The D and realize how good you had it in Akron.
Emperor Don has spent his 22 years catering to big business and building up downtown Akron while Akron's once proud neighborhoods have deteriorated into ghettos. North Hill, The Kenmore area (not even safe during the day), Firestone Park, and do you remember Rolling Acres Mall? Don's definition of "Big business" in the neighborhoods is a strip club or a tattoo parlor. Ahhhh, but if we're talking downtown, that's a different story.
Unemployment is at double-digits in Akron, and if you're not representing downtown Akron at the bargaining table, you're simply out of luck.
Again I'll ask the question of North Hill folks... is North Hill better today than it was in 1987?
What new and improved way will MendonHOLE waste the taxpayers money now? Except for not paying his own personal taxes???
What a waste of tax payers money? Mr. M should pay the lien on his federal taxes first?
- Mr. M should focus on paying his Federal Liens - is that not what people hire lawyers for? Change needs to happen in every facet of the State, Federal, and Local Government - at least this is not Iran yet - or is it - if a riot eventually breaks out in a mojor city and the populace is unhappy about 20% plus enempolyment - and they demand the US Government change to accommodate requirements of the provisions of the Constitution being upheld in many respects? How much tear gas, rubber bullets, and perhaps real ammunition would be fired? Welcome comments - truth speaks volumes and volumes of people speak truth? Where does this country stand on Democracy and Freedom? Ask Mullah's?
What a waste of time and money!
It's finally over and all the recall supporters can go find something else to complain about!
@Mike,
You sound like a sad version of Loren Eberly. Not sure what a "mojor city" is, but we here in Akron have yet to achieve half of the 20% unemployment mentioned. Please feel free to get back to me when we hit that mark.
As for you, I suggest you either get a long needed rest or seek treatment. Your post leads me to believe you need both.
Enjoy the rest of your term, Mayor Don!
:0)
sorry Akron wishes it was detroit, but the crime is growing and King Don now has a mandate to going back to treating his GF and kicking the real estate deals and getting parking lot attendants fired.
Akron is doomed, mark my words it will be worse than ever in 5 years. Your king you guys vote in will go back to his daylong naps and payoff schemes.
who cares about mendenhall, you guys love to say his name. I could care less who he his, but he was right Akron is dying.
@John:
If you're going to criticize the least you could do would be to pick issues that aren't tied into larger economic issues.
Neighborhood failures are due to:
1.) Suburbanization
2.) Decimation of US manufacturing (as those neighborhoods were based on employment at the local rubber factories)
There isn't a post industrial city in this country that isn't dealing with the same problems. In fact, many southern and western cities have the same issues as well.
And then you point out Rolling Acres Mall? Malls are falling out of favor nationally. It's not unique. Check deadmalls.com; there are literally hundreds of malls just like it. That's like saying, "Why isn't Sears downtown anymore?" Because they don't exist. Malls are in the same transition downtown shopping was in the 50s and 60s.
I'd love for ALL of the city's neighborhoods to be bright and spiffy. I like living in the city and I wish there were more middle-upper class neighborhoods within the city limits. But, we have to be realistic. The current economic issues and land development policies are really stacked against cities and their neighborhoods.
It's not over.
RUNUTS,
Clint would never approve of being associated with this sissy recall stuff. Clint would run head-to-head and kick a**.
RUNUTS -- It is over. Just look at the scoreboard -- a 3 to 1 margin of victory for the mayor.
Mayor Dandy Don said to the news his first act upon being kept will be to kick out the dis loyal people who supported this event, then tried to come back on their hands and knees to kiss his ring when they saw that the hostile take over attempt was failing. Oh King Don nothing like showing that you have our best interest at heart once again, and showing true priorities.
It's great news that Kelly Mendenhall announced her candidacy for council. Akron needs a smart, independent woman one council who can cut through the politics as usual and be the voice for Akron families. I enthusiastically support Kelly's campaign!
Here is a news flash: KELLY MENDENHALL JUST HAD A HUGE PAYCUT AT FIRSTENERGY. THAT IS WHY SHE IS RUNNING FOR OFFICE. SHE NEEDS THE EXTRA INCOME TO PAY HER HUSBAND'S BACK CHILD-SUPPORT.
RUNUTS: The fat lady sang. IT'S OVER JOHNNY! IT'S OVER!
@Whackamole said 'mark my words' we did; you did promise and swear to leave Akron when the recall failed...be better than a politician and keep your promise!
I grew up in NE Ohio and always thought that people there had a good sense of right vs. wrong. I am so glad that I did not grow up in Akron, where people seem to want a mayor who will p. . . in their face and tell them it's raining
Can someone tell meach1961 that no one cares?
Hmmmm...Mendenhall's wife is running for a council position??? Well isnt that a big coincindence after a highly publicized failed recall attempt. A recall that nobody wanted. What a stunt, this shows the character of that family... Let's make sure she fails also.
Dear Mr. Mendenhall,
I want my $200,000 back.
Your friends,
The City Of Akron
@whackamole, Mendenhall never said "Akron was dying".
Squarewest:
So then, what do you need a mayor for if all of Akron's ills are rooted in national problems? Now that you've conveniently absolved Plusquellic of any neglect (over 22 years, Dude?) then I guess we can say that it is simply impossible to level any criticism his way at all? Wow.
Bottom line, Akron is not a better place than it was in 1987.
@john: I own a home in North Akron, I've lived here since 1983. I KNOW things are better than 1987. First of all, your statement rings of racism. The only thing that has changed here is the number of non-whites that live in the hill. If that means to you that the hill is getting bad, then you are a racist. As far as the city's handling of North Hill is concerned, the mayor got funding done to rebuild the hill's business areas. Look at the work that has been done to the corner of N.Main and Cuyahoga Falls ave. We are STILL getting old buildings torn down. There is a new library here since 1987. I can go on for a while.
stleo:
"Rings of racism"? Had to go there didn't ya? Well I defy you to show me a single sentence within any of my messages where I placed this discussion into the race category? You're intellectually lazy when you pull out the race card because it's always a fan favorite.
I grew up on Murray Avenue (18 years) and there were Black families across the street from me, up the street from me, and all around me. As well as people of every nationality and background. I played sports against kids of every race, creed, and color. I loved the North Hill of my youth. I could walk anywhere (and did) day or night.
It was a community then. The North Akron Hot Stove parade brought out families from Findlay to Jackson to St. Martha and everywhere in-between. North Hill was a family. And yes, it was the inter-racial North Hill that provided shelter during the turbulent 60's and early 70's. We were together, Black and White - so don't lecture me.
THAT North Hill is not THIS North Hill. Not even close. I still have friends and family who live on "The Hill" and they all concur, the place has deteriorated. Whites, Blacks, Hispanics -- everyone is accountable.
But you're welcome to be lazy - and part of the problem too. I mean, what are you doing to make The Hill better?
Let's see, a 20% turnout and a 3 to 1 margin. That still means 85 out of 100 Akronites don't like or don't give a rats behind about Ayatollah pus-squall-lick.Watch he'll probably start a jihad against every person who opposed him in this recall. He'll start with the list of donors for the Change Akron Now commitee, then he'll find a way to snoop into the actual votes cast for recall to get the rest of the miscreants! All these people will suddenly start getting housing code violation citations, pet nusiance tickets, and whatever else he can find to harrass them. He'll make their lives living hells not just reserve a spot in hell for them. He probably thinks he has some kind of overwhelming mandate now! I hope somebody starts to mount a steady campaign against him so by next mayoral election he can be put out to pasture where he belongs.
@Mike,
You sound like a sad version of Loren Eberly. Not sure what a "mojor city" is, but we here in Akron have yet to achieve half of the 20% unemployment mentioned. Please feel free to get back to me when we hit that mark.

Enjoy the rest of your term, Mayor Don!
:0)
Wake up - reality is clear as this country is from an historical and economic standpoint as appears at present on a DOWNHILL slide - Antidepressants do not help people deal with reality - people do and as the rich steal all the money from the old and young and we allow this corruption to continue we will become as a nation another chapter in the history of those that rise and fall - maybe you need some help to understand this - go to your local Library if it is still open? Strickalns is worthless as well. Ohio voters would not support slot machines - now the state is broke and people do not have a choice or a voice -rest alol you want and take your pills you will need them? I choose to deal with realtiy - amen.
@John, have you looked up the term "ghetto" in the dictionary. The term itself brings race into the discussion.
Let me help you:
"a section of a city, esp. a thickly populated slum area, inhabited predominantly by members of an ethnic or other minority group, often as a result of social or economic restrictions, pressures, or hardships"
@john: To make the hill better, I've worked hard for 20 years to keep delivery restaurants from taking a prejudice view about delivering food here. When a member of a white supremist group opened an East Of Chicago restaurant on Cuyahoga Falls ave., in 1997, I made sure to stop his violent treatment of minorities. I help the elderly shovel their driveways. I have paid the rent of a few poor neighbors of mine, many times. I do most of my shopping here in the hill.
Now, as far as why I see you as a racist, ask Gain Some More reality. Or, ask the BJ why they deleted your remarks. I'm not being intellectually lazy; it was just SO obvious what you are, that I had to say something. Next time, think.
