Browns claim four players, waive three

By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer

The Browns claimed four players off waivers Sunday and waived three players to make room.

Claimed were running back Cedric Peerman from the Baltimore Ravens, offensive tackle Phil Trautwein from the St. Louis Rams, and defensive backs Marquis Floyd from the Seattle Seahawks and DeAngelo Smith from the Dallas Cowboys.

Peerman, 5-foot-9 and 220 pounds, was a sixth-round pick out of Virginia. Although he's considered a No. 2 back, he ran the 40 in 4.34 seconds at the February combine, as well as bench pressing 225 pounds 27 times and hitting 40 inches in the vertical jump. He was the sixth-rated back in ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr.'s ''2009 Draft Report.''

Trautwein, 6-foot-6 and 308 pounds, was a first team All-SEC selection at Florida, where he started 29 of his 46 games played. As a senior, Trautwein started 14 games at left tackle for the BCS national champion. He sat out the 2007 season with a stress fracture in his right foot.

The waived players were linebacker Marcus Benard, offensive lineman Corey Hilliard and defensive back Bret Lockett.

Also on Sunday the Browns reached an injury settlement with offensive lineman Fred Weary, who had been on the injured-reserve list.

That's two more draft picks from the 2009 draft. Peerman looks to be a great addition, as the Browns were only carrying 3 running backs on their roster. Sounds like he has hands AND speed! Baltimore was probably going to put him on their practice squad if they could squeeze him thru waivers, but they are loaded with talent (like Pittsburgh).

Four halfbacks?

So, should 3 of them be in the backfield at the same time? 3 HBs = 1 FB?

The "full house" backfield?

Mangini is a clown. So teams are at a disadvantage now because they do not know who will QB the Browns? This guy should be coaching high school with this nonsense. Does this mean that teams with a stable QB such as Giants, Patriots, Steelers & whoever else has a known #1 is now at a disadvantage to defensive game plans? Jets made the best offseason move by canning this turd. Have fun Browns fans.

I guess keeping the Vikings d coordinator guessing is more important then instilling confidence in our starting QB? That's just plain stupid.

Looks like we picked up a few decent players, but I'm ready for a 4-6 win season. Our top receiver can't catch a football and we don't know who our QB is.

Watching the Browns-Bears game on TV, I felt that the cameraman was focusing a lot on Mangini and his reaction to the play. And, . . . . . what was Mangini's reaction to the plays . . . . . nothing . . . . . not a smile . . . . not a grimace . . . . . just a stoical stare . . . . . reminded me of Belichick.

Hey, Kook Kraus, nobody cares if you sign your name but you. But at least be consistent. You signed it (below) when you posted on the Plain Dealer.

"Watching the Browns-Bears game on TV, I was seeing a great deal of Coach Mangini. The cameraman was focusing a lot on Mangini.
I was expecting to see Mangini's reaction to the play . . . . . . what did I see . . . . a man with a stoical stare . . . . not a smile . . . . not a grimace . . . . . there was no expression on his face . . . . . it reminded me of Belichick.
