150 in Akron, 2,700 other members of United Steelworkers to be covered by four-year contract

The United Steelworkers and Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations reached a tentative agreement on a four-year contract early Wednesday morning.
Few details were made available. Contract summaries likely will be sent to members next week and will be followed by ratification votes, one of the union negotiators said.
''It [the contract] brings stability to both parties,'' said Bill Crooks, president of USW Local 7 in Akron and one of the contract negotiators.
The contract, if ratified, will affect about 150 people at Bridgestone America's Akron operations and more than 2,700 other hourly workers at three ''master contract'' plants and other factories outside the master contract.
Negotiations were taking place in Louisville, Ky. The two parties had been operating under day-by-day extensions of the previous three-year contract that expired in the middle of July.
''It was a long night,'' Crooks said.
The union and Bridgestone Americas negotiators remained in Kentucky where they were were ''crossing Ts and dotting Is'' on the agreement, Crooks said.
Nashville-based Bridgestone Americas did not return calls for comment.
The union's negotiations Web site announced the two parties reached the ''framework of a tentative agreement'' and the parties were working to finalize details.
''We're still trying to get a lot of stuff done,'' Crooks said.
The Steelworkers earlier in the summer ratified a contract with Michelin's B.F. Goodrich unit.
USW members also are in the process of voting on a four-year contract with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. by a Friday deadline.
Goodyear members of the amalgamated Steelworkers Local 2L in Akron voted to approve the contract last week.
