Decision could come after 1st preseason game

BEREA: The Browns' quarterback situation might be decided sooner than expected. General Manager Phil Savage said Tuesday that the Browns would like to have a pretty good idea of the team's direction at quarterback after the first preseason game Aug. 11.
''We'd like to get this thing narrowed down pretty quick,'' Savage said.
If the Browns stick to that plan, Derek Anderson and Charlie Frye have 10 more practices and one game to try to win the job for the opener.
An early decision would not seem, though, to bode well for Brady Quinn, who has not yet signed a contract.
''I can't answer that,'' Savage said when asked how the situation would affect Quinn. Quinn's absence can't help. He missed four days of ''rookie camp'' and now has missed five more days of full-team camp.
''He's pretty far behind be cause we got a lot of offense and we're putting it in every day,'' coach Romeo Crennel said. ''It takes a while to get caught up.''
Quinn already has botched one opportunity.
Crennel said had he signed prior to camp, he'd have gotten the same number of practice reps as Frye and Anderson.
''He would have been in the mix,'' Crennel said.
Now when Quinn does sign, Crennel said he'd put him ''probably last on the depth chart and (let him) try to work his way up.''
''Eventually they're going to come to a meeting,'' Crennel said. ''Now how long that takes, I'm not sure. But I can't worry about the ones who are not here.''
On the first day of camp, Crennel referred to Quinn as ''the quarterback.'' He called Frye and Anderson by name, saying they were in camp.
Crennel was a little more coy about when he'll decide who starts, saying he hasn't even decided who will start the first practice game.
''I don't have a time frame,'' he said. ''Whenever I feel the time is right then I'm going to do it. What, many times, a coach hopes for is that somebody just pulls away and he makes an easy decision for a coach.''
That has not happened in this camp, as Frye and Anderson have been um inconsistent.
Is one ahead now?
''It looks like Wimbley is doing pretty good to me,'' Crennel said, referring to linebacker Kamerion Wimbley.
Savage said he had not seen one quarterback taking control, either.
''We're kind of in the middle of it,'' he said.
If Frye or Anderson had taken hold of the job, it might look even bleaker for Quinn's short-term hopes.
But that hasn't happened.
One day one throws some good passes and the other struggles. The next day the roles are reversed.
Tuesday, Crennel concluded practice with two-minute drills, the first of camp.
Anderson worked with the starters and the unit went nowhere.
Frye worked with the backups and led the offense to the 18-yard line, but threw an end-zone interception on the last play of the simulated situation (the offense needed a touchdown).
''Both of them, I don't think they were effective enough in that drill,'' Crennel said, though he did add that the more they do it the better they will get.
Earlier, Anderson almost threw an interception to Sean Jones, and Frye had a pass knocked down by nose tackle Ted Washington.
Frye said he thinks he's doing ''really well'' in camp, while Anderson tries to low-key things, saying he just has to take advantage when he gets a chance.
''We'll see who inches ahead,'' Crennel said. noweb
