Walsh Jesuit rolls over Hoban to go 2-0

Knights' coach cites experience of Warriors' line; Cameron Ontko runs for 138 yards, 2 touchdowns

By David Lee Morgan Jr.
Beacon Journal sportswriter

It's amazing how fun the game of football can be when everyone is doing his job. The byproduct is winning.

Walsh Jesuit is having a lot of fun on the field. After a 28-0 win over host Archbishop Hoban at Dowed Field on Friday night, the Warriors are off to a solid 2-0 start.

Naturally, coaches always feel they have room for improvement, and Walsh coach Gerry Rardin, in his 28th season, is no exception.

But more than anything else, he likes the effort he's seeing from his players.

''Our effort is there, and I told the kids that if we play as hard as we know how, we'll have fun, and we'll always have a chance to win,'' Rardin said. ''Their effort is fantastic, all the way around.''

After Walsh's 42-14 win over Buchtel last week, the talk was how Warriors sophomore run

ning back Cameron Ontko impressed the crowd with his performance, rushing for 174 yards. He had another quality performance against Hoban: 138 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns.

Ontko is talented, but so is Walsh's front line.

And against the Knights, the defensive unit led by linemen Matt Mitchkash, Chris Ciraldo and Anthony Rosati and linebackers Sam Stucker and Kevin Bailey was effective at limiting Hoban's big plays. The Knights (1-1) finished with 17 yards rushing and 55 yards passing.

''We knew this was going to be a challenge because Hoban is a good team, but it was great to get a shutout against your rival,'' Mitchkash said.

Ciraldo added: ''We want people to talk about our defense like they talked about some of the great Walsh defenses in the '90s. Hoban shouldn't get down, though. They have a good team.''

Ciraldo was right. The Knights are just inexperienced.

''There were a number of times where we were one block away from having a great offensive play,'' Hoban coach Ralph Orsini said. ''We're inexperienced up front, and Walsh's experienced line took advantage of that.''

Walsh wasted no time in getting to work, starting with the defense. The Warriors forced Hoban to punt on the Knights' opening series, then got the ball in excellent field position. In fact, Walsh's first two scoring drives started in Hoban territory.

The first started at the Knights' 46 and ended on a 1-yard run by Ontko with 5:23 left.

After forcing Hoban to punt again, Walsh got the ball at the Knights' 39 with 3:33 left in the first quarter. Stucker went in from a yard out with 12 seconds left to give the Warriors a 14-0 lead.

Warriors senior kickers Abrim Mueller and Chris Barton have played key roles. Mueller is 11-of-11 on extra-point attempts, and Barton has given opponents poor field possession on kickoffs.

It's amazing how fun the game of football can be when everyone is doing his job. The byproduct is winning.
