Here is a list of road and lane closings in the Akron area:
Major highways abruptly closed: None.
Other road construction:
Akron:
• South Main Street bridge over railroad tracks south of Miller Avenue: Reduced to one lane northbound and two lanes southbound for bridge maintenance work until Friday. A northbound detour is posted.
• Maple Street, from Glendale Avenue to West Market Street: Reduced to one lane for pavement restoration. Flaggers will control traffic flow.
• South Main Street, from Waterloo Road to Swartz Road: Road reconstruction and replacement of the bridge over Brewster Creek. The project includes widening for an exclusive left turn lane at Waterloo Road for northbound traffic, upgrading traffic signals, relocating utilities underground and upgrading street lighting and storm sewers. It will continue for about one year.
• Cedar Street, from South Main Street to South High Street: Lane reduction for entire block to allow for construction activities until spring 2009.
Elsewhere in Summit County:
• South Main Street, from Swartz Road to Althea Avenue in Coventry Township: Road widening and bridge replacement over the Tuscarawas River. Includes an exclusive right turn lane for southbound traffic turning onto North Turkeyfoot Road from South Main Street. The road will be widened to provide two through lanes for southbound traffic on South Main, and one through lane and a combined through/turn lane for northbound traffic. There will also be improvements to Swartz and North Turkeyfoot roads for added turn lanes. The project will continue for about one year.
• State Route 21 lane restrictions in Norton and Copley Township: Route 21 from state Route 585 to I-77 will have lane restrictions in both directions during off-peak daytime hours for reconstruction work. Various ramp closings will occur on the Route 21 ramps at the state Route 261, state Route 585 and I-76/U.S. 224 interchanges Monday through Friday most weeks from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. for paving work. One or two ramps will be closed at a time. Detours will be posted. Resurfacing and minor bridge work on Route 21 will continue until July.
• I-271 in Boston Township: I-271 over the Cuyahoga River is reduced to one lane in each direction during off-peak hours. The project to replace the twin bridges will be completed by late fall 2009.
• I-271 and state Route 8 in Boston Heights, Hudson, Macedonia and Northfield Center Township: Route 8 under I-271 will have various lane restrictions Monday through Friday (except holidays) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. This is part of the project to reconstruct Route 8 from just south of Twinsburg Road to just north of the I-271 interchange. New two-lane ramps will be built to get onto I-271 from Route 8 northbound and to Route 8 southbound from I-271 southbound. Route 8 has been separated from Twinsburg Road, and Highland Road has been widened with additional turn lanes and new signals. The project is to be completed by late summer 2010.
• State Route 82 in Macedonia: There will be a minimum of one lane of traffic from South Bedford Road to just east of Crow Drive. This is part of the project to widen Route 82 to five lanes in that area, with replacement of the railroad bridge over Route 82.
• State Route 8 in Stow, Hudson and Boston Heights: Route 8 from Graham Road to state Route 303 will be reduced to one lane in either or both directions Monday through Friday (except holidays) from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. for pavement repair. At all other times, two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction on Route 8 from Graham Road to Route 303. This is part of a pavement-grinding project from Graham Road to state Route 303, as well as partial resurfacing from Route 303 to Hines Hill Road, scheduled to be completed in late May.
• State Route 8 at Steels Corners Road in Stow: At the interchange and at the intersections of Steels Corners Road, Allen Road and Hudson Drive, there are various lane restrictions for widening and reconstruction work. Delays can be expected. The project will continue until September.
Medina County
• I-71 and I-76 in Medina County: Major reconstruction and widening of I-71, including addition of a third lane in each direction from one-half mile north of Leroy Road to one mile north of the I-76 interchange. Included are major modifications to the I-71/I-76 interchange. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction but there may be single-lane closings during nonpeak hours. The project is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2010.
I-71 northbound will be restricted to one lane of traffic today from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. for removal of concrete barrier wall. I-76 is restricted to one lane of traffic in each direction from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Friday this week.
• I-71 southbound ramp to U.S. Route 224 westbound now open: It had been closed for construction of a new interchange ramp as part of the I-71/76 project.
• Westfield Road closing in Westfield Township: Between Mud Lake Road and Garman Road until early December for bridge replacement.
• Lester Road closing in York Township: Between Spieth Road and Norwalk Road until early December for culvert replacement.
Portage County:
• Middlebury Road bridge closing in Kent: Until spring for a replacement project about one-quarter mile north of state Route 261. A detour is posted.
• State Route 59 in Franklin Township: Reduced to one lane in each direction while widening work takes place on the north side of Route 59.
Stark County:
• State Route 21 in Massillon and Perry Township: Route 21 over the Tuscarawas River is reduced to one lane in each direction. The project also includes the redecking and painting of the twin bridges over the river. It is scheduled to be completed by June.
• Fulton Drive and Wales Avenue lane restrictions in Jackson Township: The intersection of Fulton Drive and Wales Avenue has various lane restrictions for intersection reconstruction and widening. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by October 2009.
• State Routes 183 and 225 in Lexington Township: Route 225 from the Portage County line to the northern Alliance city limits will have various lane restrictions when weather permits for road work. This work is part of the project to resurface Route 225 and make minor culvert repairs on Route 183 just south of U.S. 62. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by late May.
Wayne County:
No current projects to report.
Elsewhere in Northeast Ohio:
• I-77, additional lane in Brecksville, Broadview Heights and Independence: Multiple lanes of I-77 are closed in both directions between Rockside and Pleasant Valley roads from about 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. The Rockside Road eastbound ramp to I-77 northbound remains restricted to one narrow lane. The entire project adds a lane on I-77 between Oakes Road and Rockside Road.
• I-480 rehabilitation and I-77/I-480 ramp improvements in Independence: During coming weeks, there will be intermittent lane closings daily and nightly as work is completed. Remaining work includes striping, rumble strips and surface course paving, requiring lane ramp closings during off-peak hours. It is expected to be completed in early December.
