University of Akron trustees on Monday tapped R. William Funk & Associates to help look for their new president.
The Dallas firm will help to identify prospects who could replace Luis Proenza, who announced in August that he will step down in June to take a year-long sabbatical and then return to teaching.
Funk “has been called the ‘guru of higher education recruiting’ by the Chronicle of Higher Education,” the university said in announcing the selection.
Contract details, including the fee and expenses to be paid, have not been finalized, spokeswoman Eileen Korey said. A fixed retainer fee would be $120,000 plus expenses, the university suggested.
UA has called on the search firm before for top-level searches: It hired Funk to look for a new chief financial officer and in the second search for its provost when the first search did not pan out.
The base cost of both of those Funk searches in 2010 was $60,000 each.
Meanwhile, the consultant is spearheading the search for the new president at Ohio State for a flat fee of $200,000 and at least $20,000 in expenses.
Kent State, which is searching for a replacement for the retiring President Lester Lefton, has hired Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates of Media, Pa., for $161,000 plus expenses.
At UA, a trustee committee has been holding executive sessions to decide what it’s looking for in a new leader. It considered eight firms as the search consultant, Korey said.
The UA search committee has promised to invite finalists to Akron to meet with campus representatives.
“There is no expectation that the names of individuals being considered by the search committee will become public prior to the names of finalists who will be coming to campus,” UA said today.
Originally, trustees hoped to name a candidate by the end of the year. It is unclear if that is still the goal.
If the selected candidate leaves the job within two years, Funk will redo the search for expenses only.
Trustee Jonathan Pavloff is chairing the search committee.
