Welty Family Foundation awards grants

The Welty Family Foundation has awarded $219,000 to 44 local nonprofit organizations at its 2012 year-end meeting.

Recipients and their programs are:

• Access Inc., for hunger relief program, $5,000.

• Akron Art Museum, for school tours, $5,000.

• Akron Community Foundation, for scholarships and tuition assistance to multicultural students at St. Mary School, $20,000.

• Akron Community Service Center and Urban League, for Next Step Program to address youth employment, $5,000.

• Akron Rotary Camp for Special Children, for general operations and Great Hall capital campaign, $10,000.

• Akron Summit Community Action Agency, for expansion of YouthBuild Program, $2,000.

• American Red Cross of Summit and Portage Counties, for relief assistance following Hurricane Sandy, $2,500.

• Battered Women’s Shelter, for general operations, $12,000.

• Boy Scouts of America — Great Trail Council, for Camp Manatoc Fitness and Aquatic Center campaign, $7,500.

• Building for Tomorrow, for early childhood initiative to promote school readiness, $5,000.

• CASA Board Volunteer Association, for training scholarships for child advocate volunteers and program director, $3,000.

• Child Guidance and Family Solutions, for capital campaign to build new central office, $3,000.

• Children’s Concert Society of Akron, for In-School and Concert Hall Series, $3,500.

• Children’s Dyslexia Centers, for after-school remedial tutoring, $5,000.

• Community Hall Foundation Program Endowment, for the Festival of Nations program, $2,000.

• Community Pregnancy Center, for Safety First program to provide cribs, mattresses and related items to newborns, $2,500.

• Daughters of Divine Charity, for Leonora Hall dining room renovations, $8,500.

• East Akron Neighborhood Development Center, for emergency home repair program, $4,000.

• Friends of Metro Parks, for Outside Is In education program, $5,000.

• Furnace Street Mission-Safety Forces Chaplaincy Center, for counseling for police, fire personnel and their families, $5,000.

• Good Neighbors, for purchase of food for Akron Food Pantry and for Green Unit, $5,000.

• Interfaith Caregivers Program, for Faith in Action volunteer program, $3,000.

• International Soap Box Derby, for race-day costs and operational support, $7,500.

• Jewish Community Center of Akron, for Girls on the Run of Greater Summit registration fees, $3,000.

• Kent State University Foundation, for WKSU, Dollar-for-Dollar Challenge Grant, $2,500.

• Little League Baseball-West Akron Little League, for new equipment, $2,000.

• Magical Theatre Co., for Bullying: Not Funny anti-bullying performances at area schools, $3,500.

• Mobile Meals, for meals and supplements, $10,000.

• NAMI Summit County, for housewarming project for those with serious mental illness, $3,500.

• Nazareth Housing Development, to rehabilitate vacant/abandoned homes, $5,000.

• Oasis Outreach Opportunity, for “The Way” education program, $3,000.

• Opportunity Parish Ecumenical Neighborhood-Ministry (OPEN-M), for free clinic, $10,000.

• Peter Maurin Center of Akron, for tents for unsheltered Akron-area residents, $1,000.

• Portage Path Behavioral Health/Community Mental Health Center, for Akron clinic roof replacement, $3,500.

• Rebuilding Together Summit County, for home rehabilitation and operating support, $4,000.

• Ronald McDonald House of Akron, to update communal kitchen and dining rooms, $3,000.

• St. Mary’s Elementary School, for iPads for student use, $5,000.

• South Street Ministries, for mentoring and youth programming in Summit Lake area, $6,000.

• Standing Rock Cultural Arts, for New World Children’s Theatre program, $1,000.

• Summa Health System, for equipment and furnishings for Center for Health Equity Community Room, $5,000.

• True North Ministry, for workshop renovation, $3,000.

• Tutoring Nurtures Talent, for rental fees for tutoring sites, $3,000.

• Williams Challenge, for Man 2 Man Fatherhood Initiative program, $6,000.

• Women’s Auxiliary Board of Summit County Children’s Home, for Beds for Kids program, $5,000.

Jerry and Emily Welty established the foundation in 1999 to benefit charitable causes in the greater Akron area. Awards are made twice a year. Grant applications are being accepted through May 1 for distribution at mid-year.
