The Wilderness Center on Wednesday named its new executive director.
Jeffrey R. Corney comes to Stark County from the University of Minnesota, where for the past eight years he has been managing director of the university’s Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve.
He succeeds Gordon Maupin, who last August announced his retirement after 32 years at the Wilderness Center.
Corney will assume his new duties April 1 at the center near Wilmot on the Stark-Wayne county line.
“As only the third executive director at the Wilderness Center in 50 years, I look forward to advancing the mission of an organization that has become such a strong resource for the community while also offering a number of cutting-edge programs. I am eager to put my ideas and energy to work as a member of a team that has earned the respect not only of its local community but also the broader conservation and nature education fields,” Corney said in a statement.
“The fact that we were able to attract a leader of Jeff’s caliber to become our new executive director speaks to the Wilderness Center’s strength, stability and dynamism over our first 50 years,” C. Andrew Haag, president of the board of directors, said.
He cited Corney’s “leadership excellence, science education credentials and innovative track record” as key factors in the selection.
At the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve, Corney managed a 5,400-acre site in central Minnesota with natural habitats that represents the entire state. It provided users with a venue for research, conservation and educational programs.
He oversaw all aspects of Cedar Creek’s operations and was instrumental in expanding the reserve’s educational and outreach programs.
Previously, Corney spent four years as an assistant professor at Virginia’s Lynchburg College and was the first full-time director of the college’s Claytor Nature Study Center, a 470-acre field station in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
He has a master’s degree and doctorate in natural resources from Ohio State University.
