Bigotry, hate polarizing Americans

Post-debate polls are enlightening

By Dennis J. Willard
Beacon Journal staff writer

COLUMBUS: I had to have the talk with my 12-year-old daughter, Jessica.

She's at that impressionable age.

It started, as it always begins, with what seems to be an innocent question.

''Dad, is it true that Barack Obama won't say the Pledge of Allegiance?''

''What?''

''My friend at school said Obama won't say the Pledge of Allegiance because of his religion.''

At the same time she is taking classes on American history and being taught how this country was founded on ideals of religious tolerance and mankind's innate equality, Jessica is being forced to fight off the poison of hatred and racism.

Sadly, she was hearing this from a seventh-grade classmate. Fear and intolerance too often beget the same.

I told her it's a lie that Obama does not say the Pledge of Allegiance and it's a lie that he refuses because of his religion.

And then I had to explain why a simple statement like ''Obama won't say the Pledge of Allegiance because of his religion'' is steeped in bigotry and narrow-mindedness.

The same small-minded people who are spreading this lie are trying to convince voters in this country that Obama, an African-American, is a Muslim and friends with terrorists.

My daughter and I watched Colin Powell appear on Meet the Press with Tom Brokaw on YouTube.

I wanted her to hear the retired U.S. Army general and former U.S. secretary of state explain why he was disappointed in the approach taken by Republican presidential candidate John McCain and his campaign in recent weeks.

''Why do we keep talking about [William Ayers, once part of the Weather Underground]? Why do we have these robo calls going on around the country trying to suggest that because of this very, very limited relationship that Sen. Obama has had with Mr. Ayers that somehow Mr. Obama is tainted. What they are trying is to connect him to some kind of terrorist feelings. And I think that's inappropriate,'' Powell told Brokaw as he crossed party lines and endorsed a Democrat.

I also wanted Jessica to hear Powell talk about Obama's religion, but more importantly, what he had to say about being a Muslim in this country.

Powell told Brokaw, ''I'm also troubled by, not what Sen. McCain says, but what members of the party say and it is permitted to be said. Such things as: 'Well you know that Mr. Obama's a Muslim.' Well, the correct answer is, he is not a Muslim, he is a Christian, he has always been a Christian. But the really right answer is, what if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer is no. That's not America. Is there something wrong with some 7-year-old Muslim-American kid believing that he or she could be president? Yet,
I have heard senior members of my own party drop this suggestion, he's a Muslim and he might be associated with terrorists.''

Powell went on to talk about a photo that appeared in the New Yorker magazine of a mother resting her head on her son's grave in Arlington Cemetery.

He had earned a purple heart and a bronze star in Iraq, where, as a U.S. Army corporal, he was killed at the age of 20.

''At the very top of the headstone, it didn't have a Christian cross. It didn't have a Star of David. It had a crescent and a star of the Islamic faith. His name was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan and he was an American. He was born in New Jersey. He was 14 years old at the time of 9/11 and he waited until he could go serve his country and he gave his life. Now we have got to stop polarizing ourselves in this way,'' Powell told Brokaw.

We went to the New Yorker Web site and found the photo.

It is sad and poignant and our hearts went out to the young man and his mother, Elsheba Khan.

And in Powell's words, we do need to stop polarizing ourselves.

The candidates and the sleaze merchants working directly for them or on their behalf should take a close look at the polls conducted on uncommitted voters by CBS News following each of the three debates this year between McCain and Obama.

While people are sorting out their respective answers to questions about the wars, the economy, health care, energy, the environment and other truly important issues facing this nation, something interesting occurs.

A steady number of voters were resolute, but it is clear that each candidate's approval ratings improved by larger percentages among voters whose opinions were changed by the debates.

In the three debates, 46, 42 and 46 percent of the uncommitted voters said their opinion of Obama improved compared to 8, 13 and 10 percent who indicated they thought less of the Democratic candidate afterward.

In McCain's case, 32, 32 and 30 percent improved compared to 21, 16 and 26 percent whose opinion worsened in the three debates.

The polling did not probe deeply enough into the scores to determine why the split between McCain's approval and disapproval numbers at 30 and 26 percent, respectively, were closest after the third debate.

But this was the debate in which McCain went on the attack and his personal approach most resembled the sordid underside of his presidential campaign.

He used verbal acrobatics to raise the specter of Ayers, first saying he didn't care about an old, washed-up terrorist, but then insisting Obama come clean about his relationship.

McCain indirectly questioned Obama's work with the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), which has been under attack for its voter registration methods, without raising any issue other than guilt by association.

And although he downplayed supporters at his and running mate Gov. Sarah Palin's rallies that shouted ''kill him,'' and ''terrorist,'' in reference to Obama, McCain wanted Obama to renounce comments made by a Georgia congressman, U.S. Rep. John Lewis, that compared McCain to former Alabama Gov. George Wallace.

''That, to me, was so hurtful,'' McCain told Obama, simultaneously channeling the anguish of a nation.

Oh Willie. The comment is neither racist or hateful. It's merely one of many rhetorical comments made to steer the voters.

Now iff'n y'all wish to adress racist and hateful comments, then why didn't y'all teach y'alls daughter about all of the racist, hateful and deceptive comments made about McCain by the demoncritic party and their followers??

Or was y'alls goal to teach her that comments made by the demoncritters are good, regardless of the comment, and all comments made by non-demoncritters aree racist and hateful??

Y'all are a pitiful excuse of a parent due to y'alls selective teachin's.

dwillard of the ABJ. I see that you uligized Obama as a role model for your daughter to understand bigotry.
What you 'did not do', was to take her to the Youtube sight you Dems have slandering Sarah Palin on two liableist statements of no fact, Witch craft and seperatism.
You demeadn her daughter as if none of you have that problem, which is a really big LOL.
Bigotry is two parts, one is telling the tale and having no foundation for, second is persueing it just because they are your oponent.
Dems do both quite elequently and then yell foul if we of the GOP return fire.
Dems do not believe associations are fair game if its about them, but boy do they use it in their ads.
Obama and the DNC have not fought McCain/Palin, they have waged a war on association with the Bush/Cheney administration and vilely assaulted Gov. Palin with lies.
Your Daughter is going to be more confused than ever when she gets to high school and will require theropy. Good luck as a parent, but bad form as a Father. Being Honest is best.

Interesting that a discussion of Obama's "religion" excluded the most venomous RACISTS this country has seen in decades:

Jeremiah Wright, screaming hatred of white people, and his church that gave racist Louis Farrahkan its highest Lifetime Achievement Award, bearing Wright's name. "In December 2007, the Trinity United Church of Christ (TUCC) bestowed its highest social achievement award upon Louis Farrakhan, the head of the Nation of Islam."
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/528635/barack_obamas_church_honors_nation.html?page=2&cat=9

How about a discussion that tries to silence every single comment/criticism about Obama's actions AND LACK OF BEING FORTHRIGHT as "racist", when most of us could care less what color he is!

It's about the "content of one's CHARACTER" and the actions and decisions and policies that are BASED ON that character!!!!!

You know, the polarization comes form thoughts like New York and D.C. are not really AMerica.

Bin Laden thought that they were the most emblematic of America.

How can people co-opt the anger from the 9/11/2001 attacks and disrespect the targets?

We are all patriotic Americans. We worship an awesome God in the blue states and have gay friends in the red states, as the poet has said.

The politics of division have to end.

mtobias

And by bringing up Jeremiah Wrigth you practice the politics of hate and division. Wright and Ayres are not Obama, just as Hagey and Liddy are not McCain.

What do the candidates say and think, not their peripheral acquaintances or pastors.

Pfotenhauer, Bachmann and Palin have seriously practiced Us v. Them politics.

If the Republicans were really trying be racist and trying to make people believe Obama is a muslim, then why haven't they been playing up the fact that his middle name is Hussein? Because they're not. Here's a stereotype for you: every time a minority candidate appears, there are 1,000 reporters looking at every little detail so they can call racism. Dennis Willard is no exception.

DENNIS J. WILLARD TRIES - SOME DAY HE MAY GET IT RIGHT

Lady1

Posted 01:03 PM, 10/26/2008

Mr. Willard:

Barack Obama's associations are fair game and this has nothing to do with racism PERIOD. Have you read his books? He did comment he will stand with the Muslims if it comes down to it. I believe Obama is a socialist and is intent on turning this country to far left ideals. I would say the same thing if Michael Moore, Sean Penn, etc were running for president. This has nothing to do with skin color.

Have you not seen all the hatred from the MSM toward Sarah Palin? Go on flick.com and type in her name. People do some nasty photoshopping that is sexist, disrespectful, hateful, etc. I find that liberals are open minded only as long as you agree with them. For example, Joy, on The View.

My spouse is American Indian and all too often that group is overshadowed and under served. We support John McCain and I know many other Indians support him as well. Obama has ZERO experience with Indian issues.

Typical namby-pamby liberal tripe..... Obama will ruin this country if he wins. Every employed black will quit working to get on the newly available welfare program for blacks only, and white people will see their taxes raised to pay for it. Blacks will get a free pass to rob, murder, sell drugs.... all Obama's attempt to make up for the perceived oppression of blacks since slavery ended. The fact is that blacks already have it better in America than whites, with Affirmative Action giving law enforcement jobs to pieces of dung like Bobby Cutts, section 8 housing being in place primarily for blacks, as are most of the liberal social programs.

People, keep this two faced anti white bigot out of office no matter what it takes. Your future will vanish if he wins.

It's funny because up until now I really was proud of both parties for not bring race into this election, but now because of the worry of some Bradley effect, the Democrats are worried that Oabma might lose because us white folks are to ashamed to say we are voting for McCain during their "POLLS" because we do not want to be branded a racists, so we say we are going to vote for Obama, but then vote for McCain. I mean why would any white folk not vote for Obama other then they be racists right. Pathetic that's all I got to say about this, and for you Dennis, I don't blame you for making a living writing an article about non existing racism, I mean all you have to do is say racism in your ARTICLE and you can sell a few hundred more newspapers. I think it pretty much says it all when the Democratic unions come on the radio and say if any white person votes for McCain then they must be a racist.

So wait a minute, let me see if I've got this straight: racial epithets are NOT acceptable when applied to senator Obama, only when applied to President Bush (ie: "redneck," "hillbilly," "cowboy.").

Joe:

Biden has made his racists remarks:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM19YOqs7hU
Of course, since he's a liberal his comment was just a joke and shouldn't be taken seriously.

Additonally, it's not racism to question a political leader's associations with known terrorists and racist religious leaders. You can tell a lot about people by the company they keep.

It's also not racist to vote against the most inexperienced presidential candidate in decades.

It's also not racist to vote against the most liberal Senator in the Senate.

It's also not racist to vote against the American version of Neville Chamberlain.

It's also not racist to vote against a candidate with Socialist leanings - "spread the wealth..." What happened to earning the wealth?

This is the main problem with this election and why the polls may, in fact, be further off than previous elections -- people are afraid to state who they'll vote for for fear of being branded a racist.

Chris

Posted 10:06 AM, 10/27/2008

I have to agree with every one who says this country won't be the same when Obama wins this election.

The country will be more prosperous for all, not just the rich. The country will be less divided and businesses will be paying more of their share of the tax burden not the middle class.

I also agree that it is not right to call anyone names (ie: redneck, cowboy, hillbilly, liberal, conservative, terrorist, old, young, etc.). I think it is better to talk about the issues and continue to talk about the issues and make up your mind based on what you think is best for this country.

God help us all if Obama gets elected.
The america we now know will be no more.
Pray there is never a confrontation between the US and the Muslim nation (only if Obama would be elected), because Obama has stated in no uncertain terms, he WILL side with the Muslims !!!
Would anyone vote for someone named Barrack Hussein Obama if our elections were the day after 9/11 ??? I think not.
How soon we forget........................
If this bigot were to get elected, we can all blame the young voters, who have absolutely no idea what he is all about.
The Bible says the anti-Christ will be of Muslim desent, and will appear about this time.
Scarey ?? You bet it is .........
Obama will cut ties with many of our allies, especially Isreal, if elected. He has absolutely NO experience.
How blind can people be ???
He is a wolf in sheeps clothing.

I run a small business,, and each time I hire someone, they MUST show proof that they are either a citizen of the USA, or have a green card to prove the right to work here before I can hire them.
SO,,,if one must show proof of citizenship to flip burgers, why are the candidates for the highest office in the land not required to show proof of citizenship?

To them: please do not back up your arguments from Youtube. Do you realize that none of that garbage is ever checked for facts??? I could post that you had 2 heads if I wanted, and you couldn't even sue for defamation. Another thing, I don't think any of you even knows the meaning of socialist, marxist, or communist, or you wouldn't be accusing Obamba of them all. By the way, there is nothing more socialitst than what our government did recently with the banking bail out. McCain DID agree with that.

and we have mccain and palin to thank for this kind of talk when you are down in the polls and when you are willing to do anything to be president that shows what you are capable of things that didn't like in 2000 when bush attack him well he's using the same people bush use to win and he's steady telling lies about the taxes he claim he won't raise the taxes the only mistake he not making is like sr. bush said read my lips now new taxes he will do it if he's elected he has no ideal about where he's going to get the money so the people in ohio pay attention of what he's not saying. he's say he not a racist but look who he has surround hisself with he don't care about stirring up this country or dividing it, and joe the plummber is really racking in mccain keep saying Sen.Obama didn't go to joe house joe walk up to SenObama and yes he i believe he was a plant of mccain with the under mind things they have done it wouldn't suprise me or other i hope he gave joe the money to pay his income taxes this man joe isn't plummber he would be help under the tax plan of Obama so you can see what joe said now he's traveling around in ohio[joe] for mccain but that okay the people know what the real deal.

how can you say Sen.Obama will not keep Isreal has our allied remember when you try to make O bama a racist well mccain is to he forget who he dealt with back in the 90's he belong to a oranzation like the [neo nazi] think about who the person here who need to be watch O bama is about united this country not dividing it unlike mccain and palin people stop thinking because this man skin is darker than your he can't be for this country.

this kind of talk hurt and when we have our children and grandchildren ask these questions of us and say why are they talking about SEN OBAMA like this isn't he a man his skin is just darker you have to tell them[GOD] creature all man equal but when you have mccain and his running mate constantly come up with who this man associated with like this last stunt, mccain was on larry king live but he want to put it out there about this professor but he didn't tell larry king he gave this same man a half million dollars back in the 90's but unlike mccain Sen.Obama don't waste his time with that this man has a vision to bring this country together as one not divided in order for us to make this country whole again we have to be able to sat down as one nation and talk put our country back on track get our troops out of iraq bring our troops home but mccain spend his time trying to make Sen.Obama look bad we are in 2008 time has change we have the republicans trying to strow this election but we will carry on we will not let what happen in 2000 and 2004 just remember to vote vote early and vote on election day nov4,2008 and make sure you look at your ballot and vote for who you feel with lead this country out of this mess, republicans would have you believe if O bama win and the house is contol by the democrastis and the senate it will be back but when you go into the voting booth think back to 8 years and 12 years before when they was in control[republicans] and they gave bush a blank check and look where we are and remember mccain voted for bush 92 percent of the time.

Posted 09:57 AM, 10/30/2008

mccain has selected memory or his memory is really going, this what you look at and to have palin waiting in the wing to be commander in chief she will have us in a worse mess after 4 trys she didn't know what [VicePresident] job is and that the tip pf the ice she don't have any experience in security of this country and look at her clips when she gave these interviews and even on the campaign trail she not as smart as you may believe but she is shred, and a climber and will do anything to get there.
