Gunmen burn homes, kill 19

A farming village in northeast Nigeria buried 19 residents Monday who were killed by Islamic extremists in a night attack that left thatched homes burned and women and children wounded, a farmer and a security official said. The attackers, armed with guns, came in vans and on motorcycles yelling “God is great,” and looted the villages’ food supplies, said the farmer in Alau village, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of his safety. His account was confirmed by a security official. The attack follows others in Nigeria’s border villages, where homes have been burned and civilians killed by members of the Boko Haram terrorist network.

Woman held in abuse

Hong Kong police arrested a woman on Monday accused of beating her Indonesian maid in a case that has triggered outrage over its alleged brutality. The 44-year-old woman, surnamed Law, was detained at the city’s airport as she was trying to catch a flight to Thailand, Senior Inspector Chan Wai-man said. The case drew attention after photos circulated last week among Indonesians in Hong Kong of Erwiana Sulistyaningsih’s injuries, showing her face, hands and legs covered with scabs and lacerations, and blackened skin around her feet. An Indonesian migrant workers’ union in Hong Kong said the 23-year-old maid, who arrived in May last year, was tortured by her employers on a daily basis and forced to wear a diaper.

American goes missing

Rescuers in the Cayman Islands searched Monday for a North Carolina man who went missing during a diving excursion off a popular beach in the British Caribbean territory. The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said 57-year-old David Byles of Pinehurst, N.C., was last seen Sunday during an organized dive off Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach. Byles had surfaced with his wife after a dive and they were swimming about 100 yards back to the boat when he vanished from view, police said. The missing man’s scuba tank, buoyancy control device and an article of his clothing were found in the water Monday, authorities said.
