Venezuela invests
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez headed home this weekend after deepening his country's investment in communist-run Cuba with new energy, finance, mining and agricultural agreements. The deals include a project to expand an oil refinery in Santiago and develop the production of petrochemicals on the island.

Queen is a YouTuber
Queen Elizabeth II, 81, launched her own Royal Channel on YouTube on Sunday. The queen will use the video-sharing Web site to send out her annual televised Christmas message, which she first delivered live in 1957. Buckingham Palace also began posting archive and recent footage of the queen and other royals Sunday, with plans to add clips regularly.
3 SAUDI ARABIA
28 arrested in plot
Saudi Arabian police have arrested 28 men for allegedly planning to attack holy sites around Mecca and Medina during the recently finished Muslim hajj pilgrimage, the kingdom's Interior Ministry said Sunday. The ministry said 27 of the men were Saudi nationals and one was a foreign resident.
4 UZBEKISTAN
Election begins
Voting began Sunday in Uzbekistan's presidential election, which is likely to see Islam Karimov's leadership extended for another seven years. Karimov, a former Communist Party boss who has led Uzbekistan since the 1991 Soviet collapse, faced three other candidates but they were seen by critics as token opponents whose candidacies were aimed at providing the appearance of competition.
5 PAKISTAN
Bhutto speaks out
Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto accused the government Sunday of failing to crush Islamic militants, days after a suicide bombing killed 56 people during prayers in a mosque. Meanwhile, an army statement said a suicide bombing of a military convoy killed five civilians and four soldiers in the troubled northwest.
6 BANGLADESH
1 million homeless
More than 1 million people who survived Tropical Cyclone Sidr are in need of basic shelter five weeks after it slammed into Bangladesh and killed more than 3,300 people, the Red Cross said.
7 THAILAND
No clarity in vote
Loyalists of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra won nearly half the seats in Thailand's parliamentary elections Sunday in a striking rebuke to the generals who forced the billionaire populist from power in 2006. The first vote since the coup appeared to be a recipe for continuing political instability: The failure of the pro-Thaksin People's Power Party to capture an absolute majority in the 480-seat lower house of parliament opens the way for his opponents to form a government despite the PPP's substantial mandate.
