Premier resigns
Italian Premier Romano Prodi resigned Thursday after his center-left coalition lost a Senate confidence vote, a humiliating end to a 20-month-old government plagued by infighting. Calling early elections or asking a politician to try to form another government are among President Giorgio Napolitano's options as head of state. Until he decides, Prodi will stay on in a caretaker role.
2FRANCE
Workers protest
Tens of thousands of civil servants demonstrated around France on Thursday to protest job cuts and press for higher salaries in what the government dismissed as a ''labor union ritual.'' Teachers, hospital workers, firefighters and postal workers were among those who answered the call from seven of eight public servants' unions to strike and march.
3IRAQ
No date for talks
Despite repeated offers from the United States, Iran has refused to set a new date for further talks between the two countries in Baghdad, U.S. and Iraqi officials said Thursday. The U.S. and Iranian ambassadors held three meetings in August in an effort to defuse tensions, but since then, Iran has backed out of a follow-up session on three occasions, Iraqi officials said.
Bomber kills three
A suicide bomber killed an Iraqi police chief and two other officers Thursday as they surveyed the site of the wreckage of a blast a day earlier that devastated a predominantly Sunni neighborhood in the volatile northern city of Mosul. The casualty toll from Wednesday's explosion rose to at least 34 dead and 224 injured.
4AFGHANISTAN
Troops accused
Hundreds of Afghans chanted anti-American slogans to protest the deaths of nine policemen who local officials said were killed Thursday in an anti-Taliban operation by U.S.-led coalition troops. The coalition denied killing the policemen.
5KENYA
President, rival talk
Kenya's president and his chief rival held talks Thursday for the first time since last month's disputed election, under international pressure to find a way to share power. But President Mwai Kibaki angered opposition leader Raila Odinga by insisting his position as head of state was not negotiable. The two met for about an hour in the presence of former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who succeeded where other mediators have failed in getting the opponents to sit down together.
6BRAZIL
Police in rain forest
Brazil will combat rising deforestation in the Amazon by sending extra federal police and environmental agents to areas where illegal clearing of the rain forest jumped dramatically last year, officials said Thursday.
