PAKISTAN
Bomber attacks air base
A suicide bomber on a bicycle attacked a major air base Friday, killing seven people. The strike was one of three bombings in northwest Pakistan that killed 24 people and wounded at least 28 as the army pushed a seven-day offensive deeper into al-Qaida and Taliban territory close to the Afghan border. About 200 people have been killed this month in a string of militant attacks on military, police and civilian targets nationwide.
SOMALIA
Drones join piracy fight
For the first time, sophisticated U.S. military surveillance drones capable of carrying missiles have begun patrolling waters off Somalia in hopes of stemming piracy. Three ships have been seized in a week off Africa's lawless eastern coast and Vice Adm. Robert Moeller, the deputy commander for the U.S. Africa Command, said pirates continue to pose a significant challenge.
SWITZERLAND
U.S. asks for extradition
The United States has asked Switzerland to hand over filmmaker Roman Polanski to authorities in California, where he could serve up to two years in prison for having sex in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl, Swiss authorities said Friday. The Justice Ministry said that Washington filed its formal extradition request late Thursday. Polanski, 76, has been in Swiss custody since his arrest Sept. 26 as he arrived in Zurich to attend a film festival.
PORTUGAL
McCain's mother injured
The 97-year-old mother of U.S. Sen. John McCain spent the night in a Lisbon hospital after a fall, Portuguese health officials and the senator's office said Friday. The Sao Jose hospital said that Roberta McCain was in stable condition and was undergoing tests after being admitted Thursday evening. It provided no further information. The Arizona senator has spoken to his mother and hospital doctors, who said she is ''recovering well,'' his office said.
PUERTO RICO
Explosion rattles capital
An explosion at a fuel storage site sent earthquake-force shock waves across Puerto Rico's capital at 12:30 a.m. Friday and set more than a dozen tanks on fire, sending up a tower of inky smoke that forced airliners to alter courses. However, no one was reported killed by the blast at Caribbean Petroleum Corp. in the San Juan suburb of Bayamon.
Compiled from wire reports.
