PAWS Pet of the Week: Meet Barney & Bentley!

By millere80 Published: May 25, 2010

Barney (white with tabby markings) and Bentley (black and grey marble tabby) are brothers who were born in late June or early July of 2009. They were found by someone who usually rescues wildlife but she couldn't leave them behind to fend for themselves! They were very young, and very sick!

Now they are both outgoing, head-butting, loveable cuddlers! They're lots of fun--you can't help but love them. Whatever you're doing, their curiosity will have them right at your side.  They're fascinated with water--if you turn a faucet on they'll run up and stick their paws into the running water and play with it.

PAWS Pet of the Week: Meet SOX!

By millere80 Published: May 17, 2010

Sox is an older guy, about 6 or 7 years old. When he was found, his face was swollen and bloody, and he had some broken teeth. He was so ill, that at first we thought he had been poisoned.  He is healthy now, but whatever happened to him has made him very, very timid and shy. He does take a long time to warm up to people.

If you are willing to be patient and gentle with him, and gain his trust, he will reward you by being an affectionate cat who is talkative when you talk to him, loves to be combed, will lay on his back to have his belly rubbed, and follow you around like a puppy.

Walking, Hiking and Camping with your Dog

By Jeni Published: May 9, 2010

ARE YOU READY TO TAKE YOUR DOG WITH YOU?

Before you go on a big hike, make sure you AND your dog are ready.  Just because your dog is a dog, it doesn't mean that they are hiking-ready.  (I'm assuming that as the human counterpart of the team, you can get yourself ready for a hike!)

Thank goodness for shedding season!

By Leighangela Published: May 5, 2010

Shedding season couldn't be at a better time this year. Now when you groom your dog, cat, or horse, or cut your own hair, that hair can be donated to help soak up the massive offshore oil spill that is devastating wildlife in the Gulf of Mexico.

Hanes is donating nylon and salons and groomers all across the country are sending in loose locks (curly hair works best) to be stuffed into nylon and absorb the spilled oil.

6th Annual PAWS 4 a Cause Adopt-a-thon and Family Fun Day

By millere80 Published: May 4, 2010

Last year was a challenging one for man and animal alike. As you can imagine, we had one of the highest numbers ever of abandoned animals enter our system. And most recently, PAWS was instrumental in helping with a raid on a Humane Sanctuary located in Kinsman, OH. Several animals were rescued and now need good homes. That's why this year's "PAWS 4 a Cause Adopt-a-Thon and Family Fun Day" event at the Cleveland Metroparks Polo Field in Moreland Hills on Saturday, May 15th (from 9:30am to 2:30pm) is so important.

Mulch Dangerous to Pets

By millere80 Published: May 3, 2010

Please tell every dog or cat owner you know! Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do....

Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes, purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog (Calypso) decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Halfway through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

The Humane Society of Greater Akron raids Boston Heights property removing 15 puppies

By jim Published: May 1, 2010

The Humane Society of Greater Akron executed a search warrant Friday, April 30 for a property located on Hines Hill Road in Boston Heights, OH. The Humane Society of Greater Akron has been receiving complaints regarding this site for over a decade but have been unable to gather enough evidence to take action.

“This week we received two citizen calls and a call from a local veterinary hospital all raising concerns about the health and welfare of animals at this site,” according to Tim Harlan, Senior Humane Officer. These three calls along with the Boston Heights Police Department enabled the Humane Society of Greater Akron to get a search warrant for the property."
