What started with a few hundred people in front of the Rubber City Radio building on Market Street has grown into one of the area's biggest pet events. The Akron Pet Expo takes place this Saturday at Hardesty Park and event organizers are expecting more than 4,000 people to attend.
In its 11th year, the Akron Pet Expo will have more than 130 exhibitors on hand from pet businesses to rescue groups. For those looking for a new member of the family, there will be on-sight pet adoptions.
The event will go on rain or shine, and pet owners are encouraged to bring their animal down. One of the spotlight events this year is the Marc's Cutest Pet contest starting at 2 p.m. Prizes donated by Marc's will be given to the 10 cutest pets. Akron Police will also be on hand for a K-9 exhibit demoing training exercises.
Radio personalities from WAKR, WONE and WQMX will also be in attendance. Animal lover and weatherman Dick Goddard from WJW (Fox 8) will also be in there meeting expo attendees. Goddard has been coming to the expo the past several years.
"His popularity and his love for animals really gives authority and people want to see him," expo organizer Art Greenberg said. "I think it gives it a real good feeling."
The Akron Pet Expo 2012 takes place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hardesty Park, 1615 W. Market Street. Admission is free. For more information, visit www.petpalsnow.com.
