AKRON: Summit County leaders will kick off the construction of an animal shelter and the sale of 2010 dog licenses at a news conference at 10:30 a.m. today at 250 Opportunity Parkway, the site of the new facility.

The county is spending $2.96 million to renovate a former warehouse located just south of downtown into an animal shelter.

The 19,494-square-foot facility is scheduled to open in late summer.

County officials had announced the site in January 2008. The current shelter is on North Street in Akron.

Dog licenses for next year are available beginning today through Jan. 31. The cost is $14.

For details about licenses, go online to www.co.summit.oh.us/fiscaloffice or call 330-630-7226.
