Pet Food Company Offers Custom Recipes for Dogs and Cats

By Leighangela Published: March 27, 2010

Many pet owners are making their own dog and cat foods from home these days, to have control over what their pets eat. But there is a learning curve involved. While commercial pet food companies may use cheap ingredients and fillers, they are tested and found nutritionally balanced.

A new option for dog and cat owners who want a healthy option that is tailored to their pets needs but still nutritionally sound and convenient is a pet food company that lets pet owners choose a custom blend of flavors and supplements. The food is  free of grain, gluten, wheat, corn, rice and soy, made to order, and delivered to your door straight from the processing facility.

By millere80 Published: March 22, 2010

When rescued, she was missing about 10 teeth, and then the vet had to pull 15 more, but that hasn't stopped her from eating dry food. When she was first caught she was not a happy cat and acted very feral. Within only one short week, Daisy learned to love and appreciate a warm bed, fresh food, water and her foster mom.

A washing machine that's truly for the dogs

By jim Published: March 16, 2010

Don't like the smell of your dog but can't face being scratched as you wrestle to wash your beloved pooch? Well, a company in Japan has the answer: a dog wash.

About the size of a large packing box and with a glass front door, the dog washing machine goes through a shower cycle, followed by a blow dry. The whole process takes just over 30 minutes -- which must seem like an eternity to the dog Inside the machine -- and costs 1,000 yen (about $11).

PAWS Pet of the Week: Meet Kira!

By millere80 Published: March 8, 2010

Meet Kira! Kira's a beautiful, brave and sweet survivor. She is a lovely, petite calico who is 2 to 3 years old. Kira is the perfect lap cat. She loves watching TV and listening to music. Kira's very affectionate and the first to greet you at the door when you come home. Kira's fine with other cats but is deathly afraid of dogs.

She came to us with severe injuries to her neck, head and face from a vicious dog attack. Kira's owner died and a relative put her out in the dead of winter. The neighbors were leaving food for her and trying to catch her but the neighborhood dogs were terrorizing her, and she would run from everyone. After the attack, her wounds got infected and she became very ill. A neighbor took her in but she had frostbite on her ears and paws. She came into PAWS the next day.

Small mammals make an excellent introduction to pet care for children

By Gay Published: March 3, 2010

I recently saw a photo of an absolutely magnificent Maine Coon cat. Named Riley, he has the added attribute of being orange. That’s not exactly right—he is a golden orange, not too far off the color of my Golden Retriever. His name is Riley, and he weighs only 24 pounds. I say only because I have a 30 pound cat, thank you very much. But he is fat, and Riley is just a very long, huge-pawed cat with a sweet temperament. I have had Maine Coons before and Norwegian Forest (all either just dropped by our house in the hopes of a place to live and acceptance by our other animals, or my daughter brought them home from the shelter. Fabulous cats. All cats and dogs are fabulous, but Maine Coons and “Wegies" are especially so. And I do adore a great big dog.

However, I want to turn my attention to other kinds of pets, namely, small mammals like hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, gerbils, and white rats. A small mammal is an excellent way to introduce to your children a pet and the care and maintenance and responsibility for one. There are things you should know before you run to your neighbors and adopt a gerbil or two after her children's pair (They TOLD us they were both female) have reproduced and she is harassing you to take a few.
