Designer Dogs

By BrookeLynn Published: August 21, 2009

Le Designer Dog.

I've read numerous articles relating to the designer dog.  Do you know what I am talking about?

The "designer dog" is a mix of two different purebred parents to create offspring that will have qualities of each of the parent breed.  Hardly like mixing a Coach bag with a Louis, but you get the point...  the puggle (pug & beagle), labradoodles (labrador retriever & poodle), buggs (boston terrier and a pug), eskishis (eskimo & shitzu) Daniff (great dane & mastiff), and the list goes on and on.

Some are bred to receive certain characteristics of each breed, and some to even ward off allergies.  ABC did a great article on this popular puppy mix

I am a huge advocate for adopting rescued poochies, who are designer breeds in themselves:  we just may not know exactly what their designers entail.  But if you are hung up on the designer doggy and really, really want one: don't just drop $1200 down on a pup, check your local rescues first: chances are owners have surrendered even their designer dogs, and you could get yourself a new best friend at a better price.
