What to do when your pet is choking? It's not as simple as giving a human the Heimlich. Your pet may be scared from choking and isn't preconditioned to understand what you're doing.

Animal first aid expert Denise Fleck tells Animal Nation the first thing you want to do is let the animal try to cough it out first. If that doesn't work, try to see into their mouth to see what the obstruction may be. Seeing what your pet is choking on will help you decide how to remove it properly. Do it wrong and you could push the object further into the pet's throat.

That's how it felt to Erin McCarthy when it came time to drag her cat and puppy to the veterinarian. So she jumped on a growing trend among veterinarians and called the vet to her.

House calls are a growing trend among the country's 85,000 veterinarians, said Dr. Bonnie Beaver, a professor at Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine and director of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists.

It's been a life-saver for McCarthy, whose cat Duke was so afraid of the vet he had to be tranquilized to get there. When he was joined by a Shih Tzu puppy, Pooch, they found a vet who makes house calls, Elisabetta Coletti. McCarthy has made liberal use of text-messaging when a house call isn't necessary.

"When Pooch ate a peppermint patty last week, she was there with instant advice that got us through the night," said McCarthy, a teacher in Brooklyn, N.Y.

CLEVELAND: A $5,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction for whoever tied three dogs to railroad tracks in Ohio. Two dogs were killed by a train and one survived by crouching off the rails.

The reward was offered Wednesday by the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

LOS ANGELES: Like any true celebrity, Uggie, the Jack Russell terrier from "The Artist" and "Water for Elephants," puts in his time on the treadmill.

At 10, Uggie doesn't do a heavy workout, just a light trot and walking, said owner-trainer Omar Von Muller of Los Angeles. But Von Muller bought Uggie a DogPacer for those times when he can't go out because of weather, work or paparazzi.

"It's important to keep him in shape," Von Muller said. "If they don't get their exercise, they get old too fast, just like people."

Some 3 million dogs across the country were using treadmills in 2010, according to a survey of pet owners by the American Pet Products Association. The group asked about treadmills for the first time in its 2011/2012 survey because the machines were selling so briskly, APPA President Bob Vetere said.

Doing a quick search for World Cat Day news items, there is very little. Christmas, apparently, has nothing to worry about. Everyone must be busy dishing out a bowl of cream or buying a fresh batch of catnip.

They say every dog has his day. And what better way to celebrate the 20^th anniversary of the Akron Children's Doggie Brigade than with other dog lovers at Canal Park?

Join 49 of the Doggie Brigade members and their handlers at Canal Park for a celebration at the Akron Aeros Dog Days of Summer event Wednesday, Aug. 8, as the Portand Seadogs take on the Aeros at 7:05 p.m.

The Doggie Brigade teams will join all the dogs in the ballpark for a pregame parade around the field at about 6:30 p.m. Ken McCort, owner of Four Paws animal behavior services in Doylestown and a longtime instructor, screener and member of our Doggie Brigade, will throw out the first pitch.

Stop by the table in the concourse near Section 114 and learn more about the program. There will be information on how to join the Doggie Brigade and about the storied history of the program, which is the second oldest program in the country.

My kitty "Angel" got out of the house a couple weeks ago. In the past if she got out, she would always come home a couple days later.
