Lobbying Ohio legislators on behalf of animals

Humane Lobby Day on Feb. 12 in Columbus was "incredible," says Dean Vickers of the Humane Society of the United States. "That people came from so many counties is exciting."

Nearly 150 voters from 78 of Ohio's 99 House districts made the trip to the Statehouse, learned how to lobby, then met with legislators. The group pushed for laws that would improve conditions for dogs at the hundreds of puppy mills in the state; make cockfighting a felony, as it is in most other states; and ban confinement crates that don't allow chickens, pigs and veal calves natural movement at factory farms.
