FDA can't find cause of pet poison, seeks help

LOS ANGELES: All that's left of Doodles are his ashes, a clay impression of his paw and a whole lot of questions owner Patricia Cassidy has about his mysterious death.

Doodles is believed to be one of 580 dogs in the U.S. that have died in the past six years from eating pet jerky from China. Baffled by the cause and seeing another surge in illnesses, the Food and Drug Administration reached out to owners and veterinarians Tuesday to help it find the poison behind the sickening of at least 3,600 dogs and 10 cats since 2007.

At least that was the conclusion among the many attendees of the Internet Cat Video Festival on Friday. Decked out with cat ears and painted-on whiskers, they lined up around the block to do in a group what they already do in front of their computers: Watch amusing cat flicks. This time, there was beer and pierogi.

Giant George, the world's tallest dog, passes away

National Pit Bull Awareness Day and Adopt-A-Thon — PAWSibilities, Humane Society of Greater Akron will hold an educational day and adopt-a-thon from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 26 at 7996 Darrow Road, Twinsburg. There are several pit bulls at the shelter available. Adoption fees for dogs between the ages of 6 months and 6 years will be $75 and senior canines will be $40. Cats over the age of 6 months are $5. All adoptions are granted upon application approval. All animals will be spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, micro-chipped and include a 30-day free trial of pet insurance through 24PetWatch. There will be raffles, refreshments and educational activities on pit bulls to dismiss the many misconceptions about the breed. More information at

Cabin Fever Cure — Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, 3900 Wildlife Way, is reducing admission prices and providing free heated transportation between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily Nov. 1 through March 31, 2014. Admission is $8.25, $5.25 for kids ages 2-11 and free to children younger than 2.

Crash tests use Center for Pet Safety's dummy dogs

LOS ANGELES: To make the world safer for pets, Lindsey Wolko had to design an indestructible dog.

Two years and hundreds of thousands of dollars later, her nonprofit Center for Pet Safety in Reston, Va., has a set of crash-test dog dummies that were battered, throttled and sent flying to test several car safety restraints.

Paws for the Cause Walk/5K run and 1-Mile Fun Run — Medina County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is sponsoring the event at 9 a.m. Oct. 26 at the Square in Medina to raise funds to prevent animal cruelty, abuse and neglect. Registration on race day is from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. Registration can also be made online at Entry fees run from $20 for adults participants to $5 for pets that are registered the day of the event. Early registrant humans will receive a T-shirt. Pets will be given a bandanna. All dogs must be on a 6-foot (or shorter), nonretractable leash at all times.

Dance Under the Stars — Kitten Krazy and De Queens of De Nile dance troop will hold a fundraiser at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Valley Woods Park Pavilion A., 13005 Schreiber Road, Valley View. Tickets are $15 per person in advance; $16 at the event. Light refreshments are included, but feel free to bring snacks. Kitten Krazy will have adoptable cats and kittens available at the event. No charges to be filed in Ohio dog remains case

TOLEDO: The head of an animal rescue group will not face animal cruelty charges after the bones of a dog she had reported missing in January were found in her yard.

The Blade in Toledo reported Wednesday that the executive director of the Toledo Area Humane Society said there was "insufficient evidence" to press charges against the woman who leads the group.

22 dogs will get lucky on new CBS television show

LOS ANGELES: Brandon McMillan has trained as many as 10,000 dogs for television, movies, commercials, videos and people. Then he started saving dogs from animal shelters, training them and finding homes for them.

When Litton Entertainment needed a dog trainer who would rescue, train and place 22 dogs in 22 weeks for a show called "Lucky Dog" for CBS, they didn't have to look far.
