One of a Kind Pet Rescue to build new home

One of a Kind Pet Rescue hopes its new home will bowl over the public.

Which is fitting, because the nonprofit animal rescue group's new location will be on the site of the former Fairlawn Lanes in West Akron.

Demolition started Monday to tear down the long-closed bowling alley.

In its place will rise a state-of-the-art $800,000 adoption center for abandoned dogs and cats as well as a retail store whose proceeds will support the agency. The group continues to ask the public for funds to support its efforts.

''We're on track to be in the new facility in October,'' said Georjette Thomas, director of organization advancement for the agency.

One of a Kind Pet Rescue has outgrown the space it has shared since 2005 with a Circle K gas station at 1699 W. Market St.

''We're very, very cramped,'' Thomas said.

The new center will have 8,000 square feet of space, providing a lot more room for the rescued dogs and cats that otherwise were in imminent danger of being put to death.

''We're still going to rescue 1,200-plus animals a year,'' Thomas said.

The new facility at 1718 Saddlewood Ave. will be visible from Market Street, behind a Walgreen's drugstore, and just about an eighth of a mile west of the agency's current location.

One of a Kind Pet Rescue's fundraising efforts for the new center include selling naming rights for what will be a large dog room and also a large cat room, Thomas said. The bigger, glassed-in rooms will allow the animals to better socialize before being placed in a home, she said.

The agency offers low-cost spay and neuter and other veterinary services at its clinic at 1700 W. Exchange St.
