Lost Female Tortie-mix in Green

By jim Published: October 27, 2010

Our sweet Natasha has been missing for a month from our Solar Estates home in Green (off Caston Rd.). She is about 12 years old, a black with orange Tortise-shell mix. She was wearing a red collar with a purple name tag. She has a unique meow. We are afraid her collar may have come off and someone took her in thinking she doesn't have a home. If you have her or know anything about her please contact us! Even if you know something happened to her, we want to know. Her daughter keeps looking for her around the house. We miss our sweet girl! 10 Most Memorable White House Pets

By jim Published: October 26, 2010

Number ten on the list is Tiger, also known as Tige, who was one of President Calvin Coolidge's cats who lived in the White House. Tige was an alley cat and Coolidge enjoyed wearing him around his neck. He was known for exploring the White House grounds, even escaping all the way to the Lincoln memorial. It wasn't long after that when Tige disappeared from the White House and never returned.

Use Motivation Not Force To Train Your Pit Bull

By Jennifer Published: October 21, 2010

There seems to be a pervasive belief that you must physically dominate and punish powerful breeds in order to handle them as adults.  This is especially true when it comes to Pit Bulls.  In numerous conversations, people with problem dogs disclose that the breeder, friends or family have told them that physically punishing the dog was necessary to show the dog "who is boss". This usually comes at a high cost to both the dog and owner.

The sad reality is that aggressive training will only cause aggression in any of our canine friends.  A University of Pennsylvania survey published last year found that using confrontational or aversive training techniques cause aggression in dogs.

PAWS Pet of the Week: Meet Freddie!

By millere80 Published: October 12, 2010

A strikingly handsome, three-year-old tuxedo cat, Freddie longs to be loved. He found his way into PAWS when he wandered onto a welcoming porch one cold winter night, seeking food and friendship. Here's Freddie's story from his rescuer:

Freddie was a newcomer who found our porch near the end of the worst part of this winter. When I first saw, or rather heard him, he was under the wooden framed couch on the porch crying pitifully. I went into the house, opened a fresh can of food, put half a can in a bowl, took it outside and waited for him to come out. He didn't - so I went inside to watch. Once I was gone, he dashed out and ate that food in about a minute and left the bowl so clean it looked like I just took it out of the dishwasher. This went on for a couple of weeks as we gradually got to know each other; finally he started coming out when we brought out food and even let us touch him. There came a day, though, that winds were blowing at 35 to 50 mph and temps were in the low teens during the day with promise of increased winds and lower temps for that night. I was out on a run so my wife called and said she was bringing him into the house. I told her to put him in my office. Once inside he got named Freddie the freeloader after a Red Skelton character. Freddie had the run of the house except at night he slept in my office and his personal box was in there too. Freddie is a gentle and well behaved cat with people; during his stay with us. Freddie was an inside visitor for about 2 weeks and everyone was making adjustments to each other fairly well."

My Bird Annabelle having Fun

By Carol Published: October 7, 2010

Annabelle is an Umbrella Cockatoo that we adopted last year. She was rescued from neglect and as you can see she plucked her feathers. Annabelle's follicles are now to damaged for feathers to grow in normally. She will always look a little like a fryer but now I couldn't picture her any other way.

Personality Test for Dogs

By Lynn Published: October 7, 2010

Do you want an intelligent dog? An ambitious dog? A social dog? An independent dog? An affectionate dog?

Most shelters and rescue organizations would agree that more dogs are "surrendered" because of behavior problems than for any other reason. Behavior is, of course, in the eye of the beholder and is often a reflection of the pet/pet parent bond or lack thereof.
