The state of Ohio is seeking help to build a new off-leash dog park at its new Wingfoot Lake State Park.
Volunteers are sought by the Ohio State Parks to donate funds and to build the new facility at the state park, which is expected to open before July 4 in Portage County's Suffield Township.
The plan calls for two fenced-off adjoining areas — one for large dogs and one for smaller dogs, said Todd Metz, assistant park manager for the Portage Lakes region.
Both areas will offer lake access for water-loving canines.
Construction will begin as soon as the needed funds and volunteers are raised, he said.
The year-round dog park will be built where an old shelter, a restrooms building and a boathouse had previously stood off the main access road at the 90-acre recreational complex off Waterloo Road that was previously owned by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.
The new state park also intends to create a new group, the Friends of Wingfoot Lake Dog Park. It will help create, develop and maintain the dog park, he said.
