Your Cat Has a Litter Problem

Humans aren't the only ones in the world with a waste problem. Bill Nye The Science Guy tackles kitty litter and shows how you can help your pet reduce its carbon footprint.

If you watch cats lay around all day, it's hard to imagine anything in their lives that could be harmful for the environment. But, in fact, one small part of a house cat's life is highly resource intensive. By no fault of their own, cats are provided with litter made from a non-biodegradable material that requires strip mining to acquire.

Sodium-bentonite makes cat litter absorbent, but its impact on the environment is severe. And it is no small problem. Americans go through two million tons of sodium-bentonite every year.
