PAWS Pet of the Week: Meet Natalie!

By millere80 Published: April 26, 2010

Natalie is the nicest girl you will ever meet! She is a small, 1-2 year old Russian Blue mix. She was abandoned, very pregnant, in the backyard of a young lady with a disability. When the landlord threatened to evict the woman if she kept Natalie, PAWS was called. By then, Natalie had given birth to three kittens, one of whom died.

When PAWS took in mama and her newborns, we fell in love with Natalie. She is the sweetest, most beautiful cat, and such a wonderful mom to her babies. She adapted to her foster home in no time, and everything seemed to be perfect. We were certain that a girl as lovely as Natalie would quickly find her new forever home.

Raining Cats and Dogs

By Gay Published: April 14, 2010

I love them both. Love cats. Love dogs. I want both kinds of animals as my friends. They aren't necessarily natural enemies, but there are some things you will want to consider.

If you get a puppy when you have an older cat, you will most likely be able to introduce them and they will be friends. A really old cat isn't, however, going to tolerant of a very exuberant puppy. I introduced very young puppies to a cat about seven months old, and the puppies were thrilled with their friend! They'd watch his tail swish, play-bow, run around. My cat was a big, big neutered male with the sweetest disposition ever. He tolerated the puppies, and he established himself as the alpha animal. As the pups grew, we got more cats. The dogs always were happy to be a part of the cat clan they learned to clean themselves like the cats, licking their paws and rubbing their ears.

Where should you get your dog?

By Gay Published: April 13, 2010

I adore the dog shows, which generally pit the best of each of the seven pure-breed groups. They are all beautiful, some are regal, others noble, some perky, but all are nearly perfect. I have a particular fondness for sporting dogs and herding dogs. I favor big dogs, and every time we think we will get a different kind of dog, we fall in love with Goldens.

But a dog is a dog, and I feel somewhat the same about dogs as I do people: They, like humans, came from a common ancestor. Dogs are just plain good, and though, through millennia of breeding, some may have certain characteristics that make them more appealing to a person than another kind, they are the same species, and therefore, they are terrific.

Intemperate animals

By Gay Published: April 13, 2010

Where I live, it's not usually this warm in early April. For whatever reason, global warming, el Nino, or a lot of hot air from celebrities' mouths we've had gorgeous weather. Warmth, bright sun, chirping birds, the whole shebang. It feels like spring, even though I know that we'll be hit with a snowstorm before summer rolls around. And, with warm weather comes bad behavior from dog owners.

I was at the grocery store, and in a big, ol' deep blue Ford Fairlane low rider stood a dog, part poodle and part a few other things. It had its entire head out of the window and was barking furiously. When I finished my shopping, I came back out and it was still there, only by now, it was whining piteously. Was it lonely? Afraid? In need of a potty break? Maybe, but you can also bet that it was hot and becoming dehydrated.

Tips for Keeping Pets Healthy this Spring from AAHA

Place Stuff On Your Cat = Fun For All

By BrookeLynn Published: April 8, 2010

Just when you thought you'd seen it all on this pets blog.  I thought my fellow bloggers have covered it all, especially in the world of KittyCats:  Cats sleeping in boxes, playing piano, and the such... but I found one and challenge you all to one-up me.

Now, humans are finding it amusing to place stuff on their sleeping or nearly sleeping cat and take a picture. McDonald's French Fries, pizza, dirty dishes, playing cards...and that is just the first page.  The website?  StuffOnMyCat.com I call it silly, but yet I easily shifted through the first five pages.  Don't lie:  you will too.  It's like you just can't help it.

It's Spring, and a pet's fancy turns to love

By Gay Published: April 6, 2010

It has been a spectacular ten days where we live and where we've visited. This is the season when we shed winter's heavy clothes and bad attitudes. The sun is shining! There are flowers struggling mightily to burst forth from the ground! We humans take on a Golden Retriever's demeanor on this kind of day. We want to romp and play, scramble madly for the seed catalogs, dig out the yard tools, repair some, replace others. We want to sip light alcoholics concoctions and grill everything. Oh, yeah, and we want to fall in love. Maybe for the first time, or maybe, as in my case, just to remember why I fell in love for the first time with the man I married. Love is in the air, but for your pets, it can be a dangerous time.

Your pets, unless neutered, will find a mate. All kinds of undesirable activities accompany the urge to reproduce, including fighting, particularly in males, spraying, yowling, constant crying, blood from a female in estrus, roaming, wandering off without regard to territory, and the dangers that accompany such behaviors.
