Sipos scores for Zips. Buckeyes get own goal

A tragic twist of irony for the University of Akron men's soccer team prevented the host Zips from beating a nationally ranked opponent.
UA, however, was still able to tie 25th-ranked Ohio State 1-1 before a crowd of 1,173 Wednesday night at Lee Jackson Field.
Unfortunately for the Zips (5-2-1), their leading goal scorer, senior midfielder Elliot Bradbrook, was directly involved with the lone goal for the Buckeyes (5-2-2).
In the 34th minute, OSU junior midfielder Roger Espinoza crossed the ball in front of the goal from the left side. The ball hit off Bradbrook and found the goal to give OSU a 1-0 lead.
''We created a good goal in the first half,'' OSU coach John Bluem said.
''I know it's an own goal, but Espinoza did some really great work to get that shot off to create that own goal. We were just hoping that we would've been able to hang on and shut them out 1-0.''
The Zips could not capitalize on several scoring chances in the first half. UA had four first-half shots on goal to OSU's two, but the Buckeyes led 1-0 at halftime.
UA tied the score 1-1 when freshman midfielder Anthony Ampaipitakwong crossed the ball from the left side, and senior defender Corey Sipos headed it into the top-left corner of the goal in the 51st minute.
During the rest of the second half and two 10-minute overtimes, UA mounted several scoring threats, but couldn't score.
UA finished with six shots on goal and OSU had three.
''In the end we were dissapointed we didn't win, especially considering we were the aggressor and had them on the ropes for a good majority of the game,'' Zips coach Caleb Porter said.
''But a tie isn't all bad against a very good Big Ten opponent.''
