TENNIS Danesis, Wedlake win sectional titles
Revere senior Stephanie Danesis and St. Vincent-St. Mary freshman Taylor Wedlake led a group of area district qualifiers at the Canton Division I and II Sectional Tournament at Weis Park on Saturday.
Danesis defeated GlenOak junior Jasmine Lee 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to win a Division I sectional singles championship. Lee advanced to district. The top four in singles and doubles advance.
Copley sophomore Jessica Wharton defeated Revere freshman Natalie Robson 6-2, 6-4 in the third-place match.
The Jackson doubles team of Loni Dickerhoof and Trisha Conlan won a Division I sectional title in straight sets.
Green's tandem of Maria Ciccolini and Heather Ross finished fourth to advance.
Wedlake defeated Tallmadge senior Jennifer Brown 6-0, 7-5 to win a Division II sectional singles championship.
Marlington's Kim Knisley beat Dukes teammate Rachel Reed in the third-place match.
Tallmadge junior Amanda Clark and senior Melissa Clark won a Division II doubles title with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over St.Vincent-St. Mary juniors Alex Ballard and Kelsey Lecerf.
Canton Central Catholic's Lindsey Endres and Lauren Coggins placed third with a win over Canton South's Ashleigh Bristow and Carlita McNutt.

Walsh Jesuit advanced a pair of doubles units from the Solon Division I Sectional Tournament.
Warriors junior Courtney Fleissner and sophomore Nancy Joyce placed second, and senior Katie Chaffee and junior McKenzie Cona finished third.
Firestone sophomore Chrissy Coffman won a singles championship, and Cuyahoga Falls junior Cassie McCurdy also advanced.
Ravenna junior Mariah Mostardi won a Division II sectional singles title at the Boardman Tennis Complex to advance to the district tournament.
Football
East 33, Kenmore 12 Sophomore Bud Brown rushed for a touchdown and had a touchdown reception to lead visiting East (1-6, 1-2) over Kenmore (0-7, 0-4) in a City Series game. East senior quarterback Rico Law threw two touchdown passes. Cardinals senior Dominic Harper returned an interception 62 yards for a touchdown.
Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin 24, Archbishop Hoban 9 Junior Dan Calabrese scored a touchdown by rushing and receiving to lead ND-CL (4-3) over Hoban (2-5). Lions senior Brad Stricker completed 18-of-19 passes for 120 yards, and rushed for a touchdown and 95 yards on seven carries. Knights junior Dominic Williams rushed for a touchdown, and junior Laymon Carter gained 73 yards on 20 carries.
Boys soccer
St. Vincent-St. Mary 4, St. Thomas Aquinas 1 The host Fighting Irish (7-4-3) scored four goals in the second half to hand the Knights (8-1-3) their first loss.
Seniors Igor Ilibasic and Ben Olson, freshman Chris Motley and junior Antonio D'Abrosco scored for the Irish. Ilibasic has 17 goals this season. Junior Andrew Over had two assists, and Bryan McCausland and Ilibasic each had one assist.
Stow 4, Green 1 Senior Brice Krajewski scored four goals to lead the host Bulldogs (2-9-3).
Kidron Central Christian 5, Triway 0 Senior Alex Steiner scored four goals to lead the host Comets (11-2-2). Steiner has 13 goals this season.
Aurora 4, Northwest 0 Junior Jamaal Simmons had two goals and senior Matt Aardema had two assists to lead visiting Aurora (10-2-2).
Louisville 2, North Canton Hoover 0 Zach McKelzey scored two goals to lead the host Leopards (11-2-2) over the Vikings (10-3-1).
Girls soccer
Northwest 5, Triway 0 Senior Ana Saeger had two goals and two assists to lead the visiting Indians (13-0-0).
Firestone 3, Kent Roosevelt 0 Juniors Ashley Rupert and Nicole Seaman and senior Brittany Barnes each scored goals to lead the host Falcons (8-4-2).
Archbishop Hoban 5, Ravenna 1 Sophomore Juliana Libertin scored four goals to lead the visiting Knights (9-2-1). Libertin has 25 goals this season.
Jackson 4, Magnificat 0 Senior Emily Rhodes scored two goals to lead the visiting Polar Bears (12-1-1).
