Roger Federer looked sharp in dominating Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday to advance to the Masters Cup final today against David Ferrer, who cruised past Andy Roddick 6-1, 6-3 in Shanghai, China.
The second-ranked Nadal was 8-5 against Federer and played well early, but the top-ranked Swiss star found another gear while serving at 4-4 in the first set. After Nadal pulled ahead 15-30, the defending champion ran off 20 of the next 21 points, including 15 in a row in an 11-minute span.
''I was really pleased with my performance for the last 11/2 sets,'' Federer said.
''Before that, it was tough. Rafa had a bit of the upper hand. But after that, I got in the zone and played incredibly. Once I get on a roll, it's hard to stop me.''
A stunned Nadal won only three points in the first five games of the second set. He finally held at love to break Federer's streak of seven games.
''When he's 100 percent, he's playing in another league. It's impossible to stop him,'' Nadal said. ''I fight. I fight. I fight. Nothing to say. Just congratulate him.''
Serving at 5-1, Federer hit an overhead winner to set up match point, and Nadal netted a backhand to finish it off in 59 minutes.
Federer is 7-0 against Ferrer. In the season-ending tournament for the top eight players in the rankings, he has won three matches in a row after losing his opener.
Ferrer, who has dropped only one set in four matches, was fresh, confident and sharp from the start, while Roddick seemed to be showing the effects of the short 20-hour turnaround from his loss to Federer the night before. Ferrer last played Thursday.
''Today I played very good,'' Ferrer said. ''Now I want to enjoy this moment.''
NFL: Two Titans miss practice
Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and cornerback Nick Harper missed their fourth practice and are game-time decisions for Monday's game in Denver. Haynesworth has not practiced since hurting his right hamstring Nov. 4. Harper suffered a concussion in last week's game and has not practiced.
The Indianapolis Colts listed left tackle Tony Ugoh as doubtful for today's game against Kansas City and waived defensive tackle Dan Klecko. Ugoh missed the past two games with a neck injury but returned to practice last week.
Skating: Asada beats Meissner
Mao Asada fell on the opening jump of her free skate but came back strong to beat former world champion Kimmie Meissner and win the Trophee Bompard in Paris. Asada, the reigning world silver medalist, finished with 179.80 points, more than 20 points ahead of Meissner (158.74). Another American, Ashley Wagner, was third. Canadian teen Patrick Chan won the men's final for his first Grand Prix title. In the pairs competition, Olympic silver medalists Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao were the winners. Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder won the ice dance title despite finishing second in the free dance.
Dutch speedskater Sven Kramer shattered the world record in the 5,000 meters, knocking more than 4 seconds off the mark in a World Cup event in Calgary, Alberta. Kramer finished in 6 minutes, 3.32 seconds at the Olympic Oval to erase the record of 6:07.40 set by Italy's Enrico Fabris on Nov. 10. Fabris was second Saturday in 6:06.42, and Dutchman Carl Verheijen was third in 6:11.15.
Golf: Armour III in lead by 2 shots
Tommy Armour III shot a 7-under 65 at Del Monte Golf Course to take a 2-stroke lead over Nick Watney after the third round of the Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational. Armour, 48, has a 14-under 202 total. Watney shot a 67.
England's Ian Poulter shot a 3-under 67 to take a 2-stroke lead over countryman Luke Donald after the third round of the Dunlop Phoenix in Miyazaki, Japan. Poulter had a 10-under 200 total. Donald also shot a 67.
Other: U.S. in Baseball World Cup final
Colby Rasmus homered leading off the bottom of the first inning, and the United States beat the Netherlands 5-0 to advance to the final of the Baseball World Cup in Taipei, Taiwan. The Americans will play today against Cuba, which defeated Japan 5-3. Matt Wright (2-0) allowed four hits in six innings, struck out six and walked two for the Americans. Neal Musser, Lee Gronkiewicz and Chris Booker followed with an inning each, completing a six-hitter that put the United States in the final for the first time since 2001.
Steve Cherundolo scored in the 27th minute, and the United States soccer team beat 2010 World Cup host South Africa 1-0 in an exhibition game in Johannesburg, South Africa. Cherundolo, at 28 oldest player on the U.S. roster, scored his second goal in 43 international appearances. South Africa outshot the Americans 12-3.
The Netherlands' Marleen Veldhuis and Sweden's Stefan Nystrand broke world records at swimming's short course Arena World Cup in Berlin. Veldhuis clocked 23.58 seconds to lower the women's 50-meter freestyle record by 0.01. Nystrand finished in 45.83 seconds in the men's 100 freestyle to break the mark of 46.25.
