Nene's tumor malignant,
but cancer is isolated
A testicular tumor removed from Denver Nuggets forward Nene was malignant. The team said Tuesday the tumor was discovered early, and tests showed the cancer was isolated.
''The recovery rate is extremely high,'' the Nuggets said in a written statement. ''In addition, the odds of a recurrence are very small.''
The Brazilian player underwent surgery Jan. 14 to remove the tumor. The team said he was doing well, but there was no timetable for his return.
The Brazilian news magazine, Epoca, reported on its Web site the tumor was small and was completely removed in surgery, citing Nene's Brazilian urologist Dr. Fernando Kim. Examinations of his blood, lungs, pelvis and abdomen showed there was no other tumor in his body.
SHAQ IS OUT Shaquille O'Neal will miss at least two weeks because of recurring pain in his left hip and leg, the latest piece of disappointing news for the reeling Miami Heat.
An MRI exam performed Tuesday on O'Neal's ailing hip found acute inflammation in that joint and his quadriceps muscle. He will be treated with ice, but won't do any basketball activity with hopes that rest will cure the problem.
O'Neal will miss at least six games, barring a change in the rehabilitation schedule. The earliest he could return under the timetable released by the team is Feb. 6.
MARBURY HAS SURGERY New York Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury had surgery Tuesday to remove bone spurs from his left ankle and is out indefinitely.
Marbury said last week he would try to return this season. He had the same surgery when he played for the Phoenix Suns and was sidelined for most of the offseason.
The procedure was performed by Dr. William Hamilton. The Knicks who have made it clear the surgery was Marbury's choice said it was successful.
GRANT HILL IS BACK Suns forward Grant Hill was back in the starting lineup Tuesday night, less than two weeks after undergoing an appendectomy.
''He's ready to go,'' Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said before the Suns played the Milwaukee Bucks. ''There's no medical reason for him not to play.''
