Sabathia gets proposal, no time limit

CLEVELAND: The Indians made a proposal to ace pitcher C.C. Sabathia recently, General Manager Mark Shapiro said Thursday.

Sabathia's contract expires after the coming season and he would be a marquee free agent in 2009.

The Indians' No. 1 draft pick 10 years ago, Sabathia said it would be tough to leave the city where he has pitched since 2001.

''I was telling Amber when we touched down yesterday it felt like home,'' Sabathia said of his wife. ''This has been my second home. Hopefully, we can get something done.''

Sabathia was in town to accept the honor as the professional athlete of the year at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards at the Renaissance. The Cy Young winner beat out the Cavaliers' LeBron James and the Browns' Braylon Edwards.

Shapiro will not pressure Sabathia's agent to get a deal done before the season begins March 31.

''We're not ever going to set a time limit on a guy like C.C.,'' Shapiro said. ''There will probably be some junctures in time that we say are going to be active or not so active for talking, but we're not going to close the door, all the way up through free agency. He's too special of a person, too special of a talent.''
