Double dream a reality

Green's Lindsay qualifies in 50 and 100 freestyles

By Michael Beaven
Special to the Beacon Journal

CLEVELAND: The idea of displaying perseverance and working hard can sometimes be overlooked.

Green senior Laura Lindsay is a prime example of a girl who entered high school with athletic potential that took a few years to be realized.

Lindsay continued to realize her potential Saturday during the final day of the Division I Girls Northeast District Swim Meet at the Busbey Natatorium on the campus of Cleveland State University.

Lindsay placed second in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 53.27 seconds and, in the process, fulfilled a dream by qualifying for state in two events, the 100 freestyle and the 50 freestyle, which she accomplished Friday.

''I worked my butt off the past year,'' Lindsay said. ''I tried to go up a level and get better each year. My freshman year I swam JV. My sophomore year, I barely made districts, and then my junior year, I barely made state.

''It's unbelievable for me to say 'I don't have to wait.' I have an automatic spot at state.' ''

Green swim coach Mike Lazor was thrilled to see Lindsay shine at the meet.

''She's such a team swimmer,'' Lazor said.

''She puts her heart and soul into this. She is so deserving, her dedication and focus are phenomenal.''

Lazor said he could envision Lindsay being a successful coach.

''I wish I could bottle up her focus and intensity and spread it to everyone on the team,'' Lazor said. ''She coaches everybody and rallies everyone together.''

The top five placers in Division I advance to the state meet in Canton, and the top three in Division II qualify for state. Eleven at-large selections will be made for each event in each division after all district times have been collected.

Solon won the Division I title with 248 points. Strongsville, Mentor, Magnificat and Firestone rounded out the top five.

North Canton Hoover junior Mandi Grandjean tied for second in the 100 backstroke with Lakewood junior Kelsey Moran in a time of 59.71, which is .36 from the Hoover school record.

Grandjean said she focused on trying to advance in backstroke about two weeks ago after occasionally competing in the event in meets.

''I had always done it in the IM (individual medley), but I always was training more for the fly,'' said Grandjean, who qualified for state in the 100 butterfly Friday.

''She's talented enough to make it in the postseason in pretty much any event she tries,'' Hoover coach Matthew Johnsen.

Stow junior Erin Duchon finished second in the 100 breast stroke in 1:06.29. ''It's not as good as I expected to be, but with a shave, taper and rest, I think I can do better,'' Duchon said.

Firestone junior Breanna McCann, Massillon sophomore Kendra Colby and GlenOak junior Stacie Clagg placed third through fifth, respectively, in the 100 breast stroke.

Hoover's 400 freestyle relay team placed fourth in 3:40.85. Freshman Jacquelyn Misanik, sophomore Julia Lockmyer, junior Rachel Misanik and Grandjean comprised that unit, which is about a second and a half off of the school record, Johnsen said.

Copley's 400 freestyle relay team finished fifth. Seniors Sarah Noble, Brittany Reynolds and Deedee Suen joined freshman Audra Giancarli in the event. Suen anchored the relay.
