Schultz signs extension
for $21 million with Wild

Minnesota Wild defenseman Nick Schultz signed a $21 million, six-year contract extension Saturday, a few months before he would have hit the market as an unrestricted free agent.

Schultz, 25, who has served as the Wild's captain for January and February, is playing this season on a one-year, $1.85 million deal. His 428 career games are the third-most in team history.

''He's been steady. He's been solid for us. He's been growing as a player, too. He's been playing much better,'' coach Jacques Lemaire said after practice at Parade Ice Garden in Minneapolis.

Schultz, a second-round pick by the Wild in their first draft in 2000, has 18 goals and 55 assists with only one game missed to injury in his six-year career. He leads the club in blocked shots with 102 and has one goal and 10 assists this season.

DEALS — Trent Hunter signed a five-year, $10 million contract extension with the New York Islanders and the Toronto Maple Leafs signed forward Alex Steen to a $3.4-million, two-year contract extension.

OFF THE ICE — New York Islanders center Mike Sillinger, 36, will undergo season-ending hip surgery within the next week and defenseman Chris Campoli is out for the season with a shoulder injury . . . Colorado Avalanche forward Paul Stastny, sidelined five weeks after an appendectomy, was activated. Stastny, 22, is the Avalanche's leading scorer with 39 points in 46 games. He has 17 goals.
