Firestone Stadium
to host Olympians

If there's anything Akron Racers President and General Manager Joey Arrietta can do to help promote softball, she's on it.

Thanks to Arrietta's tenacity, Firestone Stadium will host the U.S. women's Olympic team July 22 on its Bound for Beijing tour for an exhibition game against the Racers.

Firestone Stadium wasn't one of the originally scheduled stops for Team USA in Ohio. The others mentioned were Ashland and Xenia, but Arrietta said she contacted Warren Jones, the commissioner of the Ohio Amateur Softball Association, and asked him about including Akron on the tour.

''The idea to play a game in Akron went on the back burner for a while, but I kept e-mailing (Jones) for an update about any possibility of us hosting the event and it unfolded (Monday) morning,'' Arrietta said. ''And it's very exciting for the Racers, the fans and the community.''

Team USA's final roster of 15 players is expected to be set March 28 and that will be the team competing in Akron. The 2008 summer Olympics will be Aug. 8-24 in China.

Team USA is in the midst of a 62-game schedule leading up to the Olympics.

The team is 13-0 and has outscored its opponents 118-0.

For more information, call the Racers at 330-376-8188.

Boxer Shawn Porter
wins first round

Boxer Shawn Porter of Cuyahoga Falls easily defeated Michael Gravonski in the first preliminary round of the 165-pound division at the USA National Championships on Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Porter holds the 2007 Silver Medal at the USA National Championships and is determined to take gold this year, likely his last as an amateur boxer.
