CLEVELAND: Announcing that Victor Martinez has only a ''mild hamstring'' strain doesn't mean he will back in his familiar crouch behind the plate today or Friday.
But he and Indians officials are hopeful.
''Victor felt better yesterday, and he felt better today,'' manager Eric Wedge said Wednesday.
Martinez sustained the injury in Monday's season opener, when he slid awkwardly into second base.
The team had an off-day Tuesday, and both Wedge and Martinez said they felt he would be well enough to participate on a limited basis Wednesday night, if necessary.
''I got a lot of treatment today, then I hit and threw,'' the catcher said.
''I also rode the bike. I don't know when I will be able to catch, but I think I could pinch hit tonight.''
The problem with hamstring injuries is that unless they heal fully, it's easy to have a recurrence of the strain or even to tear the hamstring. Playing in cold weather doesn't help the situation, either, and at game's first pitch Wednesday, the temperature at Progressive Field was 34 degrees.
''Any time the body is involved, you have to be aware of the cold,'' Wedge said.
The good news in that regard is that starting Friday, the Tribe plays six games in Oakland and Anaheim, where the temperature probably will be at least 25 degrees warmer than northern Ohio.
Wedge does not think the effects of the injury will drag on long enough to force Martinez to spend time on the disabled list or even to be out of the lineup for as long as a week.
''I don't think it will be that long,'' Wedge said.
Martinez said he does not feel any twinges in his leg when he undertakes normal activity.
''I don't feel it walking,'' he said.
''I did a lot of stuff today, and I hardly felt it at all.''
