Chris Wells wants to win Heisman

Longtime goal for OSU running back

From Beacon Journal wire services
Some college standouts shy away from talk about the Heisman, as if the very mention of the statuette will somehow jinx their future.

Not Ohio State tailback Chris ''Beanie'' Wells. He's not only thinking about winning it this fall, he's been planning on it for the past few years.

''I'm not going to sit here and tell you I don't think about winning the Heisman,'' he said Thursday after the Buckeyes went through their paces in spring practice. ''Because that's something I've worked hard to accomplish.''

He said he first started contemplating the Heisman back when he was a sophomore at Garfield High School.

''Me and my father were sitting in the living room. I told him I wanted to be the first freshman to win the Heisman, but that didn't happen.''

Chuckling, he added, ''So, you know, I just want to get it, honestly.''

Wells, a 6-foot-1, 237-pounder who will be a junior this fall, is coming off a season that sets him up as a prime contender for the Heisman. He rushed for 1,609 yards and 15 touchdowns.

NFL: Browns get big preseason game

• The Browns' 10-6, near-miss playoff season in 2007 was expected to bring national television exposure. So preseason Monday Night Football might be the tip of the iceberg. The release of the NFL's regular-season schedule could be at least a week away, but the Browns will play before a national audience Aug. 18 when they visit the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants. The 8 p.m. game will be televised on ESPN. The Browns' preseason opponents were announced Thursday, with dates and times to be determined. They will open with a home game Aug. 7-11 against the New York Jets, then go on the road for two weeks. After the Giants' trip, the Browns will take on the Detroit Lions at Ford Field (Aug. 21-25), then conclude at home against the Chicago Bears (Aug. 28-30). The NFL preseason kicks off in Canton on Aug.3 (8 p.m., NBC) when the Indianapolis Colts take on the Washington Redskins in the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game.

• Browns defensive back Kenny Wright was arrested after police said he led them on a quarter-mile foot chase that began in the parking lot of the police station in Pearland, Texas. The 30-year-old Wright faces a misdemeanor charge of unlawful restraint, a misdemeanor charge of evading arrest and a misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana.

• The Cincinnati Bengals released wide receiver Chris Henry, after his fifth arrest since 2005. Henry, 24, was in Hamilton County Jail pending a court appearance Thursday after being accused of punching an 18-year-old man in the face and breaking his car window with a beer bottle. Henry was suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for the first half of last season for repeatedly violating the league's conduct policy.

• Domestic violence charges were dropped against Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison, who was arrested in early March after hitting his girlfriend. Allegheny County prosecutors announced the decision as a judge was preparing to open a preliminary hearing for Harrison on charges of simple assault and criminal mischief. ''He has entered domestic abuse counseling. The victim did not request any further restitution and the victim did not wish to pursue further prosecution,'' said Mike Manko, a spokesman for the district attorney.

• Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio signed a contract extension, a reward for winning his first playoff game. Del Rio's length of contract and salary were not disclosed by the team, but the salary was expected to be a significant jump from the original five-year, $6.5 million contract he signed in 2003.

• The Buffalo Bills will face the Pittsburgh Steelers in a preseason game Aug. 14 in Toronto to kick off the Bills' five-year bid to expand their market north of the border.

Golf: Scott, Wagner share lead

Adam Scott took advantage of placid early conditions to shoot a course-record 9-under 63 to share the first-round lead at the Houston Open in Humble, Texas. Johnson Wagner matched Scott's 63 late in the day. Charley Hoffman is 2 shots behind the leaders after a 65 and Steve Stricker is 3 shots behind.

Lorena Ochoa used four consecutive birdies around the turn at Mission Hills and settled for a solid opening round of 4-under 68, leaving her one shot behind Karen Stupples among early starters at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Tennis: Serena Williams in final

Serena Williams overcame a slow start to outlast Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla. In Saturday's final, Williams will play the winner of the semifinal Thursday night between No. 4 Jelena Jankovic and No. 19 Vera Zvonareva. No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko advanced to the men's semifinals by beating Janko Tipsarevic 6-2, 6-1. Davydenko's opponent today will be the winner of the match Thursday night between No. 1 Roger Federer and No. 6 Andy Roddick.

Correction

• Carmen Construction handled finishing touches at Fairfax Field for the Firestone Falcons baseball team. The company name was misspelled in a photo caption Thursday. A photographer erred.
