Tuesday's American League results
Red Sox 1, Blue Jays 0 — Kevin Youkilis lined a run-scoring single to center field in the ninth, ending a brilliant pitching duel between Roy Halladay and Jon Lester and lifting host Boston. Halladay (2-4) retired the first two batters in the inning before walking David Ortiz. Manny Ramirez looped a single to center, sending Ortiz to second. Youkilis then hit the ball in front of center fielder Vernon Wells to score Ortiz.
Orioles 7, Rays 4 — Garrett Olson took a shutout into the seventh inning, and host Baltimore ended Tampa Bay's six-game winning streak in a surprising duel for first place in the AL East. Aubrey Huff homered and Melvin Mora had two RBI for the Orioles, who broke a tie atop the division with Tampa Bay. Recalled from Triple-A Norfolk before the game, Olson (1-0) gave up two runs and four hits in 62/3 innings, walking five and striking out six.
Tigers 6, Yankees 4 — Gary Sheffield and Curtis Granderson homered in the third inning, sending old pro Kenny Rogers and Detroit to a victory over host New York. Magglio Ordonez got Detroit going with a two-run single off struggling right-hander Phil Hughes, and the Tigers won for the sixth time in eight games as they try to recover from an 0-7 start.
Twins 3, White Sox 1 — Boof Bonser picked up host Minnesota's beleaguered starting rotation with the group's first win in 10 days. Bonser (2-4) gave up a homer to Joe Crede among six hits and struck out eight to earn the win, the first by a Twins starter since April 19. Jason Kubel homered and Joe Nathan picked up his eighth save for the Twins.
Royals 9, Rangers 5 — Jose Guillen drove in five runs to lead visiting Kansas City. The Royals have won three of their past four games after snapping a seven-game losing streak. Texas has lost 14 of its last 18 games to fall to a major league-worst 9-18 record.

Phillies 7, Padres 4 — Cole Hamels pitched 71/3 impressive innings and host Philadelphia beat San Diego, denying Greg Maddux his 350th career victory. Hamels (3-3) allowed five hits, two runs and struck out six. Tom Gordon worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and the Phillies scored four insurance runs in the bottom half. Maddux (2-2) gave up three runs and eight hits in 61/3 innings. The four-time Cy Young award winner was trying for the third start to become the ninth pitcher in big league history to reach 350 wins. Maddux was two outs away from getting the milestone victory against San Francisco last week, but Bengie Molina hit a tying homer off Trevor Hoffman in the ninth.
Dodgers 7, Marlins 6 — Jeff Kent's two-out single broke a ninth-inning tie, and Los Angeles won its fourth game in a row by beating host Florida. Andre Ethier walked with one out against Kevin Gregg (3-1), took second on a groundout and scored on Kent's single.
Nationals 6, Braves 3 — Slumping Ryan Zimmerman had a season-high three hits, including a homer and tiebreaking two-run double, to lead host Washington past Atlanta. Zimmerman and Nick Johnson hit consecutive solo shots in the third inning off Tom Glavine, who was coming off his first trip to the disabled list in a 22-season career.
Mets 5, Pirates 4 — David Wright hit a single over a pulled in outfield with the bases loaded in the 11th inning, giving host New York a win over Pittsburgh after the Mets' bullpen wasted a two-hit performance by Johan Santana.
Cardinals 7, Reds 2 — Joel Pineiro pitched seven innings of one-hit ball and host St. Louis jumped on rookie Johnny Cueto early. Cueto (1-3) allowed seven runs on eight hits in only 12/3 innings in his sixth career start.
Brewers 10, Cubs 7 — Mike Cameron had three hits, including a two-run single in the seventh that broke open the game, and lifted visiting Milwaukee, overcoming a shaky outing by Ben Sheets.
