Flyers win to take 3-1 lead in series
Published on Thursday, May 01, 2008
From Beacon Journal wire services
Danny Briere scored the winner on a rebound with 3:38 left to lift the host Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-2 win over the Canadiens on Wednesday night and a 3-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
The Flyers, the worst team in the NHL last season, can eliminate the top-seeded Canadiens in Game 5 on Saturday night in Montreal.
The Canadiens gave the Flyers a scare when Tomas Plekanec and Saku Koivu tied the score at 2-all on goals 37 seconds apart late in the third period.
Briere's eighth goal of the postseason was enough to send the Flyers to Montreal with a chance to win the series.
R.J. Umberger scored into an empty net in the final seconds, his second goal of the game.
More NHL: Sharks stay alive in series
• Milan Michalek scored San Jose's first power-play goal of the series with 16:34 left and the visiting Sharks beat the Dallas Stars 2-1 to avoid being swept in the Western Conference semifinals. Sharks captain Patrick Marleau had tied the game with a short-handed goal. The Stars lead the series 3-1.
• New York Rangers forward Sean Avery has been hospitalized after lacerating his spleen during a playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Avery was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center after the 5-3 loss Tuesday night. Avery, whose spleen was not removed and isn't expected to need surgery, likely will be hospitalized for a few days.
NFL: Browns sign 15 rookies
• The Browns announced the signing of 15 rookie free agents, contingent on them passing physicals. The team will hold a rookie minicamp this weekend that is closed to the public. Signed were linebacker Jermaine Dias (Virginia), defensive backs Jerrid Gaines (Miami U.), Justin Harrison (Illinois), Gerard Lawson (Oregon State) and Darnell Terrell (Missouri), quarterback Craig Hormann (Columbia), tight end Kolomona Kapanui (West Texas A&M), offensive linemen James Lee (South Carolina State), Robert Powell (Purdue) and Eric Young (Tennessee), receiver Lance Leggett (U. of Miami), running back Travis Thomas (Notre Dame), defensive linemen Chase Ortiz (Texas Christian) and Brian Schaefering (Lindenwood) and kicker Jason Reda (Illinois). The Browns also claimed safety Steve Cargile, a Chanel High School product and Columbia University graduate, off waivers from the Denver Broncos. Cargile, 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, spent two years in Denver and appeared in 15 games, 12 in 2007, mainly seeing action on special teams.
College: OSU won't lose scholarship
• Kosta Koufos (GlenOak High School) is leaving Ohio State, but his early departure won't cost the Buckeyes a men's basketball scholarship, at least for now. A deficient Academic Progress Rate caused in part by Greg Oden's exit last year won't result in a lost scholarship, either. OSU professor John Bruno, the university's faculty athletics representative, said that the NCAA has accepted Ohio State's academic improvement plan for men's basketball. Bruno said the NCAA has informed the school it likely won't be penalized for its expected deficient APR. Ohio State's APR took a major hit last year when Oden left school after his freshman season without completing the spring quarter. Freshmen Mike Conley Jr. and Daequan Cook finished the quarter, so their departures are not believed to have adversely affected the APR. Koufos' departure for the NBA Draft or professional play in Europe doesn't affect Ohio State's APR for this year, but it could for 2009.
• Bowl Championship Series officials rejected a plan to turn the controversial BCS system for deciding a national champion into a four-team playoff, starting in the 2010 season. ''We have made a decision to move forward in the next cycle with the current format,'' Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner John Swofford said.
• The College World Series will be played in Omaha, Neb., at least through 2030, under an agreement reached by the city and NCAA. A long-term contract has been in the works for months, with much of the discussion centered on the construction of a new downtown ballpark to replace 60-year-old Rosenblatt Stadium. Plans are for a new 24,000-seat, $140 million stadium to open in 2011.
• The NCAA has approved applications for 34 football bowl games for 2008, including 32 existing bowls and two new games in Washington, D.C., and St. Petersburg, Fla. A request for a proposed Rocky Mountain Bowl in Salt Lake City was turned down. The new bowl games for next season will be the Congressional Bowl in the nation's capital and the St. Petersburg Bowl.
Tennis: Nadal moves to third round
• Rafael Nadal eased into the third round of the Barcelona Open by defeating Potito Starace 6-4, 6-2 in Spain. Nadal is seeking his fourth straight title in Barcelona. In other second-round matches, second-seeded David Ferrer beat Gabriel Trujillo-Soler 6-1, 6-1, and sixth-seeded Tommy Robredo ousted Robin Haase 6-2, 6-4.
• Two-time Grand Slam champion Marat Safin beat Carlos Berlocq 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to reach the second round of the BMW Open in Munich, Germany. Safin, who is ranked 84th, got a wild card for the tournament. No. 5 seed Tommy Haas withdrew due to a sore right shoulder.
