Annika Sorenstam's comeback is real. And with her third victory in eight events this season, she also showed she can beat the new No. 1, Lorena Ochoa.
The eight-time player of the year pulled away from Ochoa on Saturday, using her typical steadiness for a 2-under 69, then did the same to Jeong Jang on Sunday. A binge of four birdies in five holes on the back nine left no doubt the injuries that led to her winless 2007 are behind her, and that her once-unrivaled game is almost all the way back.
Sorenstam shot a closing 66 in the Michelob Ultra Open in Williamsburg, Va., to obliterate Karrie Webb's tournament record by five shots with a 265 total. Jang missed a short putt on the final hole for her first bogey in 35 holes and dropped into a tied for second with Christina Kim (69), Allison Fouch (64) and Karen Stupples (66).
Sorenstam was almost as good in the final round as when she shot 64 to open the tournament. Hitting almost every fairway and almost every green, she overcame an early bogey — just her second of the tournament — with birdies whenever Jang closed to within two shots. Sorenstam then used her terrific wedge game to leave everyone behind.
Katherine Hull, who started the day tied for 21st, made the first double-eagle of the year when she hit a 3-wood 229 yards on the par-5 seventh, part of a 64 that lifted her into a tie for fifth. The best round of her career also included a double bogey at the par-4 10th.
And Shi Hyun Ahn, whose first three rounds were 71, 71 and 72, tied the course record with a 63, making nine birdies and eight pars before a bogey on the par-4 ninth, her last hole.
More golf: 1st win for South African
• Hennie Otto of South Africa won his first European Tour title by shooting a 3-under 69 to hold off Oliver Wilson of England by one stroke at the Italian Open in Milan.
Tennis: Djokovic wins in Rome
• Novak Djokovic of Serbia won the 10th title of his career, rallying Sunday to defeat unseeded Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the Rome Masters in Italy. The third-ranked Djokovic won the Australian Open in January for his first Grand Slam title, then captured the Masters Series event in Indian Wells, Calif., in March. Djokovic's third victory of 2008 will move him within 310 points of second-ranked Rafael Nadal in the Association of Tennis Professionals rankings. The Rome tournament is an important clay-court warm-up for the French Open, which begins in two weeks. Despite the loss, Wawrinka will move to 10th when the new rankings come out today. With Roger Federer, it will mark the first time two Swiss players have been in the top 10.
• Dina Safina of Russa pulled off her third upset of a top-10 player in a week at the German Open in Berlin, winning the title by defeating ninth-ranked Elena Dementieva 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. The 17th-ranked Safina, 22, also beat No. 1 Justine Henin and No. 8 Serena Williams at the clay-court event.
• Ivan Ljubicic was two points from losing the match when he rallied to beat Steve Darcis 6-7 (6), 7-5, 7-6 (4) in a rare Sunday start for the clay-court Hamburg Masters in Germany.
• Two-time champion Amelie Mauresmo of France withdrew from the Italian Open in Rome on Sunday with a rib injury. She joins top-ranked Justine Henin on the sideline. Henin withdrew on Friday, citing fatigue.
On foot: Kenyan sweep in Prague
• Kenneth Mburu Mungara won the Prague International Marathon in the Czech Republic on Sunday, leading a top-five sweep for Kenya. Mungara crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 11 minutes, 6 seconds. In the women's race, Nailya Yulamanova of Russia defended her title by winning in 2:31:43. Two Kenyans followed.
• Denis Nizhegorodov set a world record in the men's 50-kilometer walk at a World Cup meet Sunday in Cheboksary, Russia, shaving 1 minute, 34 seconds off the old mark. The Russian finished in 3 hours, 34 minutes, 13 seconds, on a course alongside the Volga River.
Other: Man United is EPL champion
• Manchester United won its 10th English Premier League soccer title in 16 years Sunday, getting a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo and another goal from Ryan Giggs to beat Wigan 2-0 on the final day of the season. United finished the 38-game season with 87 points, two points more than Chelsea, which was held to a 1-1 tie by Bolton. If Chelsea had won, United still would have won the league title on goal difference. The two teams face each other on May 21 in the Champions League final in Moscow.
• Riccardo Ricco won the second stage of the Giro d'Italia bicycle race in a sprint finish, and Franco Pellizotti took the overall lead in the three-week event.
• A Chinese man was arrested for saying in an Internet chat room that he planned to grab the Olympic torch during its relay through eastern China, police said Sunday in Beijing. The man, 28, identified only as Tang, was detained in Zhenjiang in Jiangsu province in eastern China for allegedly spreading rumors online and disturbing public order, said an official in the local public security bureau who would give only his surname, Zhang.
