Five deep thoughts on Cavs

By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sports columnist

1. The key to winning today? The Cavaliers' defense. It might not make for an appealing game, but it's the path to victory with the fewest ruts.

2. The Cavs simply do not have the offense to match the Boston Celtics. The players around LeBron James are not consistent enough to be dependable, especially on the road. If the Cavs play defense, they give themselves a shot.

3. Kevin Garnett has been very good in this series, but Paul Pierce has struggled with his shot, and Ray Allen has been a nonfactor. The Cavs must keep the clamps on Allen. If he has a big scoring game, there are problems.

4. But for one quarter in Boston — when they shot 12-for-16 — the Celtics have not shot well. Keeping the Celtics from going on a run will be paramount. Spare no timeout, no move, to keep the momentum and the crowd from swinging to the Celtics.

5. It might mean nothing, but all the Celtics' three standouts are older than 30, and all are playing in their second seven-game series. The past two games, Allen, Pierce and Garnett have played more than 40 minutes. You just kind of wonder if age might catch up to them.
