UA player accused of firing at police

By Carl Chancellor
Beacon Journal staff writer

A University of Akron basketball player is being held on charges of firing shots at Akron police officers after a traffic stop.

Akron police detectives said Rydell Brooks, 20, a UA sophomore, was pulled over on a routine traffic stop around midnight Saturday.

Police said Brooks fled from the vehicle and fired several shots at officers, who caught him after a short chase.

He is being held in the Summit County Jail, along with Edward J. Davis Jr., 20, of Cole Avenue, Akron. Davis also was in the car, police said.

Brooks, a 2006 Buchtel High School graduate, transferred from Niagara University and joined the Zips last year.

Brooks sat out the 2007-08 season and will be eligible to play the next three seasons.

Brooks, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound guard, led Buchtel to three consecutive City Series championships and was the City Series Player of the Year in his junior and senior years. As a freshman, he helped Niagara qualify for the NCAA Tournament and win its conference tournament.

Brooks and Davis will be arraigned at 9 a.m. today in Akron Municipal Court.
