Borowski, Westbrook preparing
to leave DL and return to duty
CHICAGO: Joe Borowski (strained triceps) pitched a scoreless inning at Double-A Akron and is ready to come off the disabled list.

''We're looking to activate him tomorrow,'' manager Eric Wedge said Thursday. ''He's ready to get back.''

With Borowski as the closer, Rafael Betancourt will return as setup man and Rafael Perez and Jensen Lewis will basically pitch in the seventh inning.

''This will allow our people to get back to their familiar roles,'' Wedge said. ''I'm hoping that will tighten up things in the bullpen.''

ONCE MORE — Jake Westbrook's 90-pitch rehab start in Akron tonight probably will be his last.

''If everything goes well for him tomorrow, he will start some time in the middle of next week,'' Wedge said.

Westbrook has been on the DL since April 20 with a strained intercostal.

MOVES COMING — Two players will have to vacate roster spots because of the impending return of Borowski and Westbrook.

More than likely, Aaron Laffey will be optioned to Triple-A Buffalo after his next start on Tuesday so that Westbrook can start, possibly on Wednesday.

It is not clear whether Wedge prefers to maintain a six-man bullpen or go back to seven, which will determine who goes when Borowski is activated.

''I'm not sure what we're going to do,'' Wedge said. ''We don't necessarily have to do that [return to seven relievers].''

First baseman Michael Aubrey might end up back in Buffalo, but little-used left-hander Craig Breslow also is vulnerable.

In addition, outfielder Shin-Soo Choo (Tommy John elbow surgery) is likely to be activated from the DL soon, probably before his rehab assignment at Buffalo expires.

''We'll probably take a look at everything after this weekend after he's gotten more at-bats under his belt,'' Wedge said.

NO HARM, NO FOUL — Wedge seemed pleased that Victor Martinez demonstrated his anger by getting his foot caught in a plastic bucket that he kicked after he lined out Wednesday night.

''I think it's a good thing,'' Wedge said. ''I didn't see it, but I saw those guys trying to contain themselves (laughing), so Victor wouldn't go ballistic. It's been a tough week. It's good to blow off some steam and relax a little bit.''

FARM FACTS — Nicholas Weglarz homered, doubled and singled, driving in three runs, as Kinston routed Myrtle Beach 13-2 in Class A. Jared Goedert and Chris De La Cruz each had two hits and two RBI, and Carlos Rivero homered. . . . Ryan Morris gave up three runs (none earned) in seven innings, as Lake County lost to West Virginia 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader in Class A. Joanniel Montero threw five scoreless innings in Lake County's 3-2 win in the second game.
