CLEVELAND: Good news for Aaron Laffey is bad news for Fausto Carmona. That's the way it works in baseball.
Carmona will be out for an estimated four weeks after injuring his hip in the third inning Friday night against the Texas Rangers.
''Fausto suffered a mild strain of his left hip,'' head trainer Lonnie Soloff said Sunday after medical specialists studied an MRI scan of the affected area. ''He will be out approximately four weeks and will not play catch for seven days. If he is asymptomatic after that, he will begin exercise and start a throwing program.''
In other words, once Carmona is pain free when he walks briskly or negotiates stairs, he will be permitted to initiate a throwing program wherein he plays catch from ever-expanding distances.
''That would be followed by a mound program, then we would build him up in simulated games,'' Soloff said. ''Fausto already has started several games, so his arm is in condition. Because of that, we hope that he will be able to climb back on the horse very quickly.''
In the meantime, Carmona will spend lots of time with ice on his hip and sitting in the whirlpool. He also will be given anti-inflammatory drugs.
The Indians are fortunate in two ways: Laffey has made several effective starts for Jake Westbrook, who will be activated from the disabled list this week and probably start Wednesday. The injury to Carmona could have been worse.
''The positive thing is that this is an extra-articular muscle, so it is not in the hip joint,'' Soloff said. ''Once it heals, it will be fine.''
Extra-articular refers to the muscle being on the surface of the hip rather than within the hip structure.
How did Carmona suffer the injury merely throwing a pitch or darting off the mound to cover first base?
''He's a maximum effort guy,'' Soloff said. ''When it happened, it was a combination of finishing that pitch covering first base.''
Since being called up to take Westbrook's place in the rotation, Laffey has posted a 2-3 record but 1.60 ERA. Despite the high quality of his starts, he would have been optioned back to Buffalo to make room for Westbrook on the roster.
More than likely, a reliever Edward Mujica or Scott Elarton will be sent to Triple-A when Westbrook returns.
