Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks was activated from the disabled list Sunday and started against the Baltimore Orioles.
Weeks had been out since spraining his left knee trying to turn a double play in Colorado on June 6. Corey Hart and Craig Counsell hit leadoff in his absence, but Weeks returned to the top spot in the order against the Orioles.
''That's where he goes,'' manager Ned Yost said.
Weeks spent Friday and Saturday taking grounders and swings in the batting cage at Miller Park, convincing Yost that he did not need a minor-league rehabilitation assignment.
In 59 games before going on the DL, Weeks hit .220 with seven homers and 43 runs scored.
Mariners' maladies
Adrian Beltre was held out of the Seattle Mariners' starting lineup for the second consecutive game and manager Jim Riggleman said the slugger could be back today when the Mariners begin a series at the New York Mets.
Riggleman said Beltre bruised his left index finger taking grounders a few days ago and has difficulty gripping a bat. Miguel Cairo got the start at third base for the second day in a row against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday.
Riggleman also said Erik Bedard, who left his start Friday night with back spasms, was ''significantly better'' by Saturday.
Bedard is expected to take his next turn in the rotation Wednesday against the Mets. If he can't go, Riggleman said his options include right-handers R.A. Dickey and Miguel Batista.
Fill-in closer Brandon Morrow, who has been receiving treatment for back spasms in Seattle, is expected to join the team in New York today.
Around the bases
The St. Louis Cardinals placed shortstop Cesar Izturis on the 15-day DL with a strained right hamstring. Izturis was injured Friday night and came out of the Cardinals' 5-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox in the fourth inning. . . . Teenage pitcher Jason Knapp, the Philadelphia Phillies' second-round selection in the draft, agreed to a contract. Knapp, 17, a right-hander, was the 71st overall pick. . . . The Pittsburgh Pirates placed rookie starter Phil Dumatrait on the 15-day DL with left rotator cuff tendinitis before their game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Reliever T.J. Beam was promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis to fill the roster spot. . . . The Kansas City Royals purchased the contract of Horacio Ramirez from Triple-A Omaha, adding the veteran left-hander to their bullpen. . . . The Cincinnati Reds activated shortstop Jeff Keppinger from the DL and designated infielder Andy Phillips for assignment. . . . The Florida Marlins called up outfielder Jai Miller from Triple-A Albuquerque to provide some depth after center fielder Alfredo Amezaga injured his left groin while running the bases Saturday. The Marlins also placed right-handed reliever Burke Badenhop on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 14 with tendinitis in his throwing shoulder.
