Carroll steps up,
provides NL tips
CLEVELAND: Since taking over for the injured Josh Barfield on June 11, Jamey Carroll is batting .436 with seven runs scored and seven RBI in 14 games, going into Friday night's encounter with the Cincinnati Reds.
''I never anticipated we would have this number of injuries,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''But Jamey has played every day before, and he's really stepped up for us.''
Carroll, who has played in the National League, clued the Tribe in on various aspects of NL ballparks and players' tendencies. For example, he warned Wedge of a glare that comes off the yellow seats behind the plate during day games at Dodger Stadium.
''Jamey pays attention,'' the manager said. ''He's a student of the game, no doubt about it.''
RARE FEAT — According to Elias Sports Bureau, Cliff Lee is the fourth Indians pitcher to start a season 11-1 or better. Johnny Allen (12-0 in 1937 and 11-1 in '38) did it twice. Gaylord Perry was 11-1 in 1974, and Charlie Nagy was 11-1 in 1996. Lee leads the American with a 2.34 ERA and with a 91.7 winning percentage.
FUTURES GAME HONOREE — Kinston starter Hector Rondon (5-3, 3.45 ERA) will be the Tribe's lone representative in the Futures Game, to be played July 13 at Yankee Stadium and televised by ESPN2 at 12:30 p.m.
The Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers each have three minor-leaguers in the game; the St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants and Colorado Rockies will have three each.
FARM FACTS — Jordan Brown went 3-for-3 with a homer and one RBI, as Buffalo beat Indianapolis 7-3. Chris Gimenez, promoted from Akron earlier this week, got two hits and an RBI. . . . Nicholas Weglarz and Jared Goedert each hit their seventh home runs of the season, but Kinston lost 10-6 to Frederick. . . . Russell Young gave up one unearned run and five hits in three innings, and Jeremie Tice had two hits and one RBI in Mahoning Valley's 7-6 loss to Batavia. Lonnie Chisenhall had a triple. . . . Alexander Perez (1-1, 2.70 ERA) gave up one run and four hits in five innings, as the Gulf Coast League Indians defeated the Tigers 4-2. Kevin Rucker homered.
