Tuesday's American League results
Rangers 3, Yankees 2 — Michael Young had an RBI single off Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning to help give visiting Texas their second straight win over New York. Rivera (2-3) came on in the ninth after the New York bullpen held Texas to one hit in four innings in relief of Joba Chamberlain and proceeded to give up hits to the first two batters he faced. Ian Kinsler doubled to left, stole third — his third steal of the game — and scored to give Texas a 3-2 lead on Young's hit through a drawn-in infield to give the Yankees their third straight loss. Frank Francisco (2-2) pitched the eighth for the win.
Rays 3, Red Sox 1 — Matt Garza pitched seven strong innings in his first outing since throwing a one-hitter for host Tampa Bay. The win extended their lead in the AL East to 21/2 games over the second-place Red Sox. Garza (7-4) allowed an unearned run and five hits, and Dioner Navarro snapped a fourth-inning tie with an RBI single off Tim Wakefield (5-6). Grant Balfour got the last four outs, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and striking out three in the ninth.
Orioles 7, Royals 5 — Brian Roberts homered, Ramon Hernandez and Adam Jones had two RBI apiece, and host Baltimore rebounded from two straight frustrating losses. Aubrey Huff had two hits and drove in a run for the Orioles, who built enough of a lead to make it easy on closer George Sherrill. After yielding late-inning homers Sunday and Monday, Sherrill entered with two on, one out and Baltimore up 7-3. The left-hander retired Mike Aviles on a grounder before Mark Grudzielanek hit a two-run single. Sherrill then struck out Alex Gordon to earn his 27th save.
Twins 6, Tigers 4 — Craig Monroe hit a three-run homer and Justin Morneau added three hits to help host Minnesota. Mike Redmond had two RBI for Minnesota. Marcus Thames hit his second homer in as many games for the Tigers. Scott Baker (5-2) retired 10 of the first 11 Detroit batters before getting roughed up a bit in the middle innings. For the second straight start, he allowed three earned runs in six innings. Brian Bass and Dennys Reyes limited Detroit to one run in two innings before Joe Nathan earned his 23rd save in 25 chances with a perfect ninth.
Tuesday's National League results
Pirates 6, Reds 5 — Pittsburgh blew two more late leads, but Jack Wilson — batting at the very bottom of the order — hit a tiebreaking triple in the 11th inning that set up the win over host Cincinnati. Wilson's run-scoring triple off David Weathers (2-4) snapped a 4-all tie in the 11th, and Nate McLouth followed with a run-scoring single that gave the Pirates just enough.
Nationals 9, Marlins 6 — Collin Balester won his debut, and Ronnie Belliard hit a grand slam for visiting Washington. Balester gave up one hit and struck out three in five innings to become the first Nationals starting pitcher to win his big league debut. Belliard's second career grand slam in the sixth put the Nationals ahead 6-1. Jon Rauch allowed the tying run to come to the plate in the ninth before getting Luis Gonzalez to fly out for his 17th save in 22 chances.
Phillies 8, Braves 3 — Shane Victorino hit a home run and drove in four runs for the visiting Phillies. Pat Burrell also hit a homer for the Phillies. Chipper Jones was 1-for-3 with a double and two walks in his return after missing eight straight starts with a strained right quadriceps. Mark Kotsay came off the disabled list after missing 33 games since May 26 with a lower back strain. He went 0-for-4. The Phillies broke out with 14 hits. Philadelphia scored five runs on eight hits in the first three innings against Braves rookie Charlie Morton (1-2).
Mets 7, Cardinals 4 — Tony Armas (1-0) won in his season debut and eighth-place hitter Ramon Castro had two hits and three RBI for the visiting New York Mets. David Wright hit his 16th homer and lacked a triple for the cycle as the Mets had 14 hits after mustering six runs while dropping three of the previous four games.
