Struggling Brett Myers heading to Triple-A to work on his delivery
Published on Wednesday, Jul 02, 2008
Associated Press
Brett Myers, leading the major leagues with 24 home runs allowed and coming off the shortest start of his career with the Philadelphia Phillies, is headed to the minor leagues.
Myers agreed to be optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday. Myers, 3-9 after giving up five runs in two-plus innings in Friday night's 8-7 loss at Texas, has a 5.84 ERA, sixth worst in the majors among qualifying pitchers.
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he spoke with Myers about accepting the assignment to work on his delivery.
The Phillies are 1-11 in the past 12 games started by Myers, who is 1-8 in that stretch.
Myers will start tonight against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Giants recall Alfonzo
The San Francisco Giants recalled former backup catcher Eliezer Alfonzo from Triple-A Fresno on Tuesday, nine days after he completed a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
He was the first player penalized this year under Major League Baseball's drug program. Alfonzo was batting .316 (25-for-79) with five home runs and 19 RBI, five doubles and a triple in 20 games for the Grizzlies this year. He was out from April 30 to June 22.
Cardinals sign Wallace
Former Arizona State infielder Brett Wallace, selected with the 13th pick of the first round last month, agreed to a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals for a signing bonus of about $1.84 million.
Wallace hit .410 with a career best 22 homers and 83 RBI as a junior. He leaves today for Class A Quad Cities and begins his career as a third baseman.
Tribute to military
Thousands of military members will be able to watch the Giants host the Chicago Cubs in a special telecast on American Forces Network tonight, done as a tribute leading up to the Fourth of July. The game will be available to 176 countries and 200 U.S. Navy ships.
